100% with you Dan. I gave up a career as a helicopter pilot to have an actual life and get to take part in my kids growing up. Some people are baffled by that kind of move but none of them have lived a life away and missed out on so much that others take for granted. Life is short. Spend it wisely.t

Probably my favorite thing about your channel is how you unashamedly share your faith. Prayers for you dude. I know they work, and I'm glad to be a part of this community you've created.

God bless you. Once you draw that arc in the sand, it's amazing how many people will draw their own arc and you see the fish. We're out here, being much too quiet in our beliefs. I've been watching for several years now and your guidance helped me and my husband pick our hiking gear. I'm also a nutrition enthusiast and suggest you seek an anti-inflammatory way of eating that will help your entire family. Focus on removing seed oils like soybean, canola and peanut from your meals. Remove peanuts and look into the lectins found in beans and tomatoes. I was suffering with knee and foot arthritis and discovered information about what causes inflammation. I removed just peanuts (mixed nut snack in the evening) and pain disappeared in a matter of a 2-3 days. Keep loving God and your family; and thank you for sharing your love of hiking/camping with us all.

As a lower limb amputee and avid motorcyclist and camper. I gave up my dreams of backpacking because of my leg, its not that i cant do it, i just know the trip will be ruined if i get to camp and my leg hurts the whole time im there. Instead I've done alot more car camping and im pushing into motocamping. Personally i think motocamping is one of the best things for a disabled or injured backpacker/camper because you are carried by a machine that in itself provides fun and adventure and you still get to be in nature and the entire trip is now an adventure instead of a commute to a place, have an adventure, and then a commute home. The adventure starts when the kickstands go up and then it ends when they go down again in your driveway. The other excellent pro is that you pack everything on the bike instead of on yourself. So you save your back and your knees but you can still get an excellent workout and you have energy to hike around with a small daypack once you've made it to camp. Thats how i stay in the wild with a disability and for me it works, i know for backpackers hiking is one of the main pleasures of the experience but i saw in a video you mentioned an ebike and thats been a gateway for alot of people to get into dual sport motorcycles and motocamping. Its so great that you are taking time and being with your family as a dad and husband i hate being away for a day let alone a week at a time, my suggestion woukd be to give motocamping or bike camping a shot, you'll save your body and have more energy when you return home. Cheers, best of luck, and keep up the excellent content!

Hi Dan, I'm not a hiker nor a backpacker. I've watched your channel because I'm a dirt biker and do occasional moto camping weekends and I've picked up a lot of gear from watching your reviews; and I thank you for that. I love that you have compassion and a love for humanity (I've watched the Sawyer videos) and that you are a man of God. I wish you well and may you continue to be blessed and have good health. As for the struggle regarding travel vs. being at home, one thing I've learned over a 34 year career is I can make more money, but I can't make more time. As we get older, time becomes a more valuable commodity. Take care! 😀

Isn't it crazy how something like a major health scare can end up being a blessing? So glad for you being able to fully enjoy your family during this time of discovery.

Hey Dan, once again appreciate your honesty on this. Have been talking to my elder friends who are telling me that it is important to do things within our abilities. As we get older we need to make changes... My latest has been moving to the ultralight products (without leaving myself open to cold etc). I don't through backpack as often any more (once a month at least) but do many more daywalks and overnighters. Will I do through hiking again? Yes. My 70th next year, I plan to do a relatively difficult hike with my niece in Tasmania. She has done through hikes with me before, and although she started out hot, she now realises that 20 kms per day max gives us much more time to look around, do other things and recover well. She is a great walker, fit as hell, and sometimes I do feel I am holding her back, but she is quite happy to be out there. She does take me on some things I wouldn't usually do, such as white water rafting - that was a blast. And I take her on things she wouldn't usually do - we have booked in for stand up paddle boarding in the Northern Territory this month. Looking forward to that. Another guy I walk with loves to fish. I sit and enjoy watching him fly casting. Beautiful. So there are many more aspects to enjoying the outdoors...

Hi Dan, I was diagnosed with Arthritis in one knee. I was destroyed being a very active person - the doctor said no more hiking, surfing, snow boarding, running . But I decided to ignore it. I lost 30kg (66 pounds for the Americans) and purchased shoes that were good for me (Asics in my case (and now Altra)) - I also hit the gym hard. I haven't had an issue with my knees for 2 years now. I'm fitter than ever. Hiking more than ever. Love your videos - don't let a doctor diagnoses rule your life. All the best.

The power of prayer is real. I am coming back after being out for cancer treatment. I had many people praying for me and it helped me along the way. Prayers for you. I look forward to seeing you on the trail less and with family more. It makes the trail that much better. I hope that makes sense.

Hi Dan, I really appreciate you talking about your health journey. I was forced out of hiking and mountain biking with major inflammation and joint swelling with no diagnosis. Recently got diagnosed after 23 years and am on Humira for auto immune disease. My life is totally different. I'm riding my bike again, planning a backpacking trip for the first time in years, and feeling better. Also, I definitely will be praying for you. God can do anything. If you trust him, he will get you through whatever he lets you go through.

Hi Dan! I'm one of those folks who doesn't believe in prayer or God. But one thing I do believe is that you have one of the best UA-cam channels devoted to the outdoors and I am not only sure that you will manage your current health challenges gracefully but I am counting on it. I am grateful that your channel has proven to be such a valuable resource and look forward to more of your work.

Good to see and hear that you have made plans for some more trips. I just want you to know how much your videos helped me (I’m 70) and my daughter start camping and have success. We started camping in 2020 and ,believe me , the learning curve was steep! Your videos guided us toward comfortable, and safe, sleep systems and tent choices and other equipment choices. Just last month our brave, bold, geared up selves packed up, flew to Iceland and camped for part of our trip around Ring Road. We could never have done it without your advice and guidance. So know you are valued and best wishes for future health.

Dan, Big Prayers to you. Learning to live with an aging body does suck, but keep at it. No surprise to me that you received so much support. You're content is on point and helpful. And you are a pure, honest, easy going, self deprecating, nice guy who - I know you don't think of it this way - are nice to allow us to hang out with you every couple weeks. Best travels!

I loved that you asked for prayers, Dan. Soak ‘em up! Looking forward to seeing Pictured Rocks. I’ve been waging a campaign to get my husband, committed day hiker, to make this our first camping and backpacking trip together. Sell it, man!
