I mean I give Games Workshop most of the credit in terms of coming up with the right names and references for things to make Cathay feel authentic to a fantasy Chinese faction. Like CA did a great job executing that but the IP and the content would be Games Workshop's to begin with. Like CA would not be able to make up stuff randomly and add it into the game without running it by Games Workshop
Love how they incorporated the 4 symbols with the Dragon children. Li Dao will definitely be added in with Monkey King as FLC. And I see Yuan Bo as a Lo Pan type character 😂
God if they got James Hong to voice one of the Dragon Children, the Monkey King, or (if we do see playable Jade Blooded Vampires) Harakhte I’d be so happy.
Another interesting lore mentioned by games workshop is how Archaon the ever chosen fought and killed a chaos dragon named Yien-Ya-Long or Flamefang. It’s appearance was serpentine and have caused much damage to Cathay for quite a while. Could be one of the missing kids.
I really like the new lore, and I hope GW expand upon it in their new Old World setting. Would love to read a three kingdoms style book series set in Grand Cathay, maybe starting with a blue (tzeentch) turban rebellion
I'm really getting similar vibes from the Dragon Emperor and his children, that I get from the Emperor of Mankind and the Primarchs from 40k, and seeing as how we refer to the Emperor as "Big E" I think we can refer to the Dragon Emperor as "Big D"
I liked the theory about one of the dragons resenting his father and starting his own cult in Nippon, being worshipped there as the "true" dragon emperor. Or that fanart of one of the dragons which has been resurrected by a Jade Vampire which could be a new faction in the top right part of the map which is currently empty.
Kinda hoping in the Mortal Empires map and if we get Yin-Yin, we can launch an invasion to either Lustria or the Southlands for colonization reasons and to finally redeem his or her failure before. But then again, Lustria as it stands is so cramped that it's a constant warzone between Lizardmen, Undead, Human, and Elf. Lustria would an expansion, along with the rest of the Southlands.
There are eight winds of magic but nine dragons. We know Miao Ying is Life, Zhao Ming is Metal, Li Dao is Fire, Yin Yin is Beast, Shen Zoo is Light and the dragon lying at the bottom of the river is death. That Leaves Yuan Bo and two other missing dragons. I'd assume one of the missing ones is the shadow one, so do we know if Yuan Bo is the Heaven dragon or the missing one? I'd assume Yuan Bo being more of an administrator would be the windless one. Also, in Archaons story, he fights a Chinese-looking dragon. Granted this lore is from before the Cathay updates so it might not be canon anymore but if they have incorporated the story into the new lore, that dragon might be one of the missing ones. Maybe the shadow one?
This is why I started following you. You have a way with telling the lores of different TW titles in such a beautiful manner that I cannot get enough of it. Specially your proper pronunciation of the nouns. Keep it up! ❤
Miao ying: Ruler of northern provinces Zhao ming: Ruler of western provinces Yuan bo: Central provinces and currently invading lustria Yin yin: Ruler of eastern provinces and commander of the dragon fleet.. ( next dlc soon). Li dao : fire dragon of the south and currently fighting the monkey king, khuresh and ind! Probably the last DLC for Cathay. Shen zoo: missing.. went up north.. probably captured by chaos gods. Shiyama: The original oldest child of the emperor.. She was slain by someone? And now she resides in the spirit river guiding the souls of cathayans.. the emperor cries everytime he passes the river. The other two are still unknown! Probably corrupted by chaos or rebelled against thr dragon emperor..
This is such a cool and tasteful way to do eastern dragons. I always feel Chinese style dragons are neglected but they can be a really interesting type of being somewhere between God and Person. Hope they flesh it out more.
It would be cool if they made a nod to other parts of chinese history or culture, maybe a smaller faction or rebel faction inspired by Song Jiang/The water margin or a guan yu type character or three kingdoms reference
I think GW might hesitate to create many human characters right now, as The Old World takes place centuries before the "current" setting of TWW, meaning that everyone they create wouldn't have been born yet.
Interesting to see how dragons in East Asia are revered while the ones in Europe are often scorned. Which reflects how the dragons in the old world such as wyverns and terrogheist looks scary af and belongs to green skins and vampires while Cathayan dragons are the opposite.
While they are both called Dragon , I think they are actually two entirely different species. Western Dragon is pretty much lizards with wings while Eastern Dragon is inspired by snakes. Their biggest similarity is their heads but even those were very different in mythology: Western Dragon has bird like head while Eastern Dragon has Lion like head with horn.
Ha, he thinks I would only like the video at the end, little does he know I instantly like any of his videos I watch! Very interesting as usual, keep up the great work :)
Great video but one thing, the onyx crowmen are different from the moon empress agents. The info comes from an interview where Andy Hall describes groups of the crowmen flying, and states they're different from the agents. So both are servants of the moon empress, but agents would be like witch hunters whereas the crowmen would be some sort of creature or construct, maybe like magical sniffer dogs, tracking down hidden magic users.
no that's a very good question and the simple answer is because they are not human. Even in traditional Chinese mythology, even deities that were previously human would use an alternative name called 号 (hao) instead of their traditional Surname + Name structure. And some historical "hao" that you might be familiar with are things like Sleeping Dragon for Zhuge Liang or the (Beautiful) Monkey King as his Chinese Hao would be (美)猴王 for Sun Wukong which would be his monk name given by his master. Now these dragons probably never had regular human names to begin with as it is said the Dragon Emperor had to learn how to transform into a human to better rule his subjects.
Yin Yin = Lore of Beasts, perhaps? Spirit Dragon = Lore of Death. I think there's a hint they're still somewhat alive, as I saw a screenshot of an event where their yell of sorrow at the fractured family gives +40 relations between Zhao and Miao. We can probably see their appearance in the Ancestral Warriors spell. Thus, out of the two missing one must be the dragon of the Lore of Shadows. The last one wouldn't have any associated lore so I wonder what their story is. They also bring the gender balance / harmony of the family out of whack.
If I had to guess the 9th dragon is either A: Not associated with any wind of magic because they’re uniquely untalented with the winds of magic but makes up for it by being the best melee fighter of the Dragons (Basically Cathayan Konrad Von Carstein). B: They’re uniquely able to use spells from both the lore of Yin and Yang. C: They’re Lore of Tzeentch since they’re the 9th Dragon Child and 9 is the number of Tzeentch so maybe the 9th Child fell to Chaos.
@@InquisitorThomas I think all dragons (and Shugengan) can use all eight winds, it's just for gameplay balance ("lore") that they prefer to use a limited amount of them. The Shugengan voice lines certainly support it, they say they are masters of the eight winds. Even if the 9th fell to Tzeentch that doesn't answer the question of what they were like originally.
As usual, another great video from our dear friend. Be sure, mate, that I will watch very carefully your campaigns and I do hope that you will do both the Cathayan factions that are playable, Miao Ying the Storm Dragon and the Zhao Ming the Iron Dragon. But in this point, since it's the first Cathay lore video, I would like to give a Greek perspective to the name. Cathay is the other national name for China. As ST has pointed out, the name "China" comes from the very first dynasty to unite the whole of the Chinese world, the Qin dynasty (I hope I write it correctly in the Latin alphabet). But this is not the first name, as in the Greek world the country was known from the Archaic period as "Cathay", written in Greek letters "Καθαίη" (Ka-thέ-i) or "Καθαία" (Ka-thέ-a), depending on the pronunciation of the last vowel in each of the three main dialects (Ionic and Aeolian the first, Doric the other). The meaning is the people who live very far in the East. Herodotus, the first who mentions Cathay in his books, clearly states about the big estates in the East, at war with each other, but their people belong to the same nation, and India had many exchanges with them through difficult roads over the Himalayan passes. But since his journeys stop in the Indian world and the Himalayas, he doesn't provide anything more specific about Cathay. Obviously, he was talking about the Warring States, as the unification under Qin Shi Huang Ti happened around the timeline of the great Macedonian expansion (or a bit later, as the Qin empire was well known at the Seleukid palace around 210 BC). Thus, the creators used the ancient name that the Greeks knew this country before the unification by the Qin dynasty and it's a good name. Hope that this provides you just a hint of info about the view the Greeks had of the Chinese world and the origins of the name we have in the game. Have a nice time.

I would say the Monkey King is 100% going to happen. Nippon will have to depend on Games Workshop since it would require not only the creation of a faction for Warhammer III but like all the accompany lore and characters for the regular Old World Warhammer universe
I have a feeling DLC will include Xen yang old emperor but still powerful will be one faction. Dragon Knights or minor dragons as units His wife the Moon empress Gui Yin will be like more supportive Faction same as the high elf Queen, my guess her units will more be moon and healing will be fun to see the map area shroud in moonlight
I recall CA saying that the Celestial Dragon Emperor and the Moon Empress are not going to be playable because of how powerful they are. That and the Dragon Emperor has withdrawn above Weijin to focus on his projects, distancing himself from his subjects.
Sorry but I think there might be a mistake here. Yuan Bo is in charge of the Central Provinces, primarily from the city of Shang Wu. Wei’jin is located in the Imperial Provinces which lies on the eastern end of the Great Bastion near the Dragon River. We don’t actually know if there is a dragon that resides in Wei’jin, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was Shen-Zoo’s job (if she wasn’t lost that is).
I think that the Sea Dragon is also associated with the lore of beast (Lore of Wood in Cathay in correlation to Wu Xing), which is strange at first glance. Though knowing how she is an expansionist, it make sense how she is associated with wood since wood can represent growth. Or it may just be that wood is associated with ships, which is what you need inorder to have a fleet to guard the coast of Cathay.
I mean it comes down to the fact that dragons technically have access to all eight lores because they all practice Feng Shi but they just specialize in a few so there is probably many way to explain it

nope Chinese dragons are all serpentine in shape if we are talking about the style drawn after the Song Dynasty. The ones before would just be a little bit shorter looking a bit more beast like but still not going to have wings or anything like a western dragon
One is an oversized lizard with wings that allows themselves to be tamed as rides while the other is a older than god shape shifting serpentine overlords of Grand Cathay

nope Chinese dragons are all serpentine in shape if we are talking about the style drawn after the Song Dynasty. The ones before would just be a little bit shorter looking a bit more beast like but still not going to have wings or anything like a western dragon
Whats the difference between elven dragons and Cathay dragons
One is an oversized lizard with wings that allows themselves to be tamed as rides while the other is a older than god shape shifting serpentine overlords of Grand Cathay
Elven dragons: Mindless.. like a horse.
Cathayan dragons: Very old dragons, wise and can turn into humans
Where is this lore from? Did CA write some new lore?
Games Workshop did the lore. Most of the information are from Andy Hall’s interview
nice vid
老哥,你怎么做到英文这么好的!
小时候来美国读的书,还是中文没丢比较神奇
👍🏻
According to my European standards those are levitating lizards not dragons, but otherwise nice video.
hehe, according to Chinese standards, why would a divine beast need wings to fly =P
