    Probably the greatest dance number from a movie ever. The way her long scarf blows in the wind, and the set that goes on forever, with no computer tricks. It just looks magnificent. I hate to say this but....They just don't make them like this anymore!

    Such a gorgeous moment. I always die when the fabric hits the 1:03 spot. Those long shots!

    One of my favorite films. Apparently, this scene was shot on MGM's largest sound stage. Cyd Charisse recalled that there were several large fans blowing full blast to get her 'cape' to flow the way it did.
    We hardly see films shot on this scale anymore. Sad really. No massive sound stages, no 'real' actors/dancers. Just give 'em a green screen and a computer and you have a hit.

    Personally, I'm quite thankful that Gene used these scenes to "just show off his talent." He was an amazing dancer who devoted much time and effort into everything he did in his movies. Some might say that this is a little indulgent, but look at the gem it is! Look at the millions who enjoy this film year after year! I applaud Gene and Cyd for their marvelous work :)

    after watching American in Paris, the introducer on TCM, said that Cyd was hired to play the role in American in Paris, but she discovered she was pregnant and declined so the part was given to Lesile Caron... I would have loved to have seen her in that role.. and this is coming from someone 29 and not even around during those times..i just feel her magic

    Two great dancers... a Dali-inspired set, a fantastic veil and Charisse's elegant feet. Such excellence of performance and visuals can be equalled, but it rests at an unsurpassable level. I cannot imagine anyone improving on this. It's at a point where it's a matter of taste.

    True talent and probably the beginning of many a man's foot fetish!!! And Yeah, Gene Kelly was Great too, I just like sexy women dancers more.... When they made this Chick, they threw away the mold... Often imitated, but never duplicated, Cyd Charisse is probably the sexiest dancer who ever lived and managed to do it in movies that would be rated PG today.

    And that was by design, just eye candy!Singin in the Rain, was a movie-about-the-movies. Her character had no name and didn't need one! She was there to provide, w/Kelly, an exhilarating ballet sequence which had nothing to do with the rest of the film, but is one of the most sensual scenes ever done in a musical. The sexy short chemise, combined with the sheer chiffon fabric, as she proudly displays her gams, her trademark. Nice, firm, pretty toe points-sexy feet. Bella!
    1:25-1:33&1:41-1:43!

  • @6cozumel
    @6cozumel 15 років тому

    Relevant!? Sure. Its an idea! W/the success of JAZZ SINGER, silent film gives way to Talkies. Remember the storyline? After a bad preview, Kelly is caught in the bumpy transition with OConnor & Reynolds to save DUELLING CAVALIER w/ideas of merging a modern musical! Kelly calls the story of a young hoofer arriving in NY, Broadway Melody & includes this 2nd dreamy over his head number in the film featuring Cyd. In the end their film becomes Dancing Cavalier & saves the day. Real film noir!

    xanadu was the last movie gene kelly was in and there are references to this movie EVERYWHERE like in "suspended in time", the ground has lines making it look like a large expanse, like the lines we see in this video.

  • @sophiamcl
    @sophiamcl 12 років тому

    The point of it is that it's such a great number. It's the movie that's an excuse for putting all these great songs and dance-numbers together.

  • @RobinHood3000
    @RobinHood3000 15 років тому

    I distinctly remember the rationalization they made for it, but that doesn't change the fact that this number was shoehorned in (and rather inelegantly) by completely changing around "Dueling Cavalier" to something completely different. There's no trace whatsoever of the original "Dueling Cavalier" in the sequences shown in that part of the film. No merging, no reason to suspend disbelief, just Gene Kelly showing off his talent (substantial though it was) with Cyd Charisse.

  • @janestahl
    @janestahl 14 років тому

    Love this scene; so beautiful, so romantic, so graceful. Back when dancers had to convey sensuality with their clothes on and directors didn't have mainframe computers to work with. Not taking anything away from this number, but I wonder how it would have looked with her in toe shoes?

  • @hellasexy22
    @hellasexy22 13 років тому

    @stylestar07 I'm with you! I love Leslie Caron but it would have been interesting to see how Cyd Charisse would've handled that role in An American in Paris. However, I think they would have had to change the storyline a little because Cyd was more like a "madame" & more mature than a mademoiselle like Leslie!

  • @6cozumel
    @6cozumel 15 років тому

    But its a work in progress with the quite clear presumption that the dance numbers will in fact enhance the final outcome. At first down on himself because of talkies, Lockwood later realizes maybe his real strength is dancing & singing, not acting. But because DC cant change its French revolutionary theme he must incorporate his ideas into the film as a sort of patchwork. He clearly refers to the dance numbers as the modern or present day part of the picture.
