Torville & Dean - "Bolero" - '84 Olympics - HQ

- Опубліковано 16 жов 2009
- I made this recording STRAIGHT OFF the original Olympic feed, so it's as good a quality as you'll ever see. 25 [now 30!] years on, this piece shows there's NO substitute for passion. Enjoy!

40 years ago today 2024
Just absolutely stunning. AND very top marks to the CAMERAMAN, THIS is how cameramen SHOULD work not the rubbish we get today, chopping and changing all over the place. In this video not once did the camera move from these two amazing artists. Bravo.
I agree, but it isn't exactly the cameraman...it's the director.
And there’s no announcers talking.
It's a handheld video camera the BBC took in fear of the host broadcaster cutting off. Exactly what happened one month later at the Worlds.
As for the commentary, Alan Weeks knew the right moments to speak and when not to. RIP.
@@chubbyflower305 talking rubbish mr chubby, educate yourself you ignorant pos, we never needed BBC cameras
@@zabranjenakojasko6833 I remember watching this live Chubby is absolutely right, only one camera was used for the routine and it was supplied by the BBC. I saw the host broadcaster's version later on and more cameras were used which was fine.
It's 30 years later and I still gets goosebumps when I watch this. The most beautiful routine I've ever seen.
Paminlp Flawless!
I'm crying. Every time.
@@jumian31 Me too to see it in person goosebumps at every beat of the music. Christopher was quite the choreography and sometimes hard to work with but when it comes together you can't beat it.
I’m not into figure skating - I might watch a small amount every 4 years, and I don’t understand any of the technical nuances of what I’m seeing. But this is without exaggeration one of the most beautiful and hypnotic things I’ve ever seen in my life. The sheer grace of it all, and the subtle way their choreography flows with the music, it’s astonishingly artful. And you can tell how much they’re enjoying themselves - the confidence and joy they exude is irresistibly charming. It goes to show that it’s always a joy to see something done at the highest level, no matter how well you understand it. There’s always something there that is just universally recognizeable.
30 years on; still makes for lump-in-the-throat and bleary-eyed magic. Incomparable.
I thought it was just me!
Anika Trahan Trust me, millions who were blessed enough to have witnessed it all those year ago would still, if they understood why they were so entranced then, feel time stood still now with each reviewing. For that matter, the OP with the toreador remains, to this day, one that always gladdens the heart for the sheer brilliance of how a tale can be woven.
same at 40 years on :)
@@alexrowe2000 Aren't we the lucky ones, eh!😁
2022 and it’s still a masterpiece in elegance, artistry, costumes, music, and technique. Just perfection.
Hands down the greatest performance in figure skating history. There is something about the song Bolero that resonates with Sarajevo and the turmoil in that part of the world that would happen within the decade after this. I commend Torville and Dean for treating their fans by performing this 10 years later as their performance at the Lillehammer champion's gala. Here's some trivia about this performance...T&D were told that the minimum the 17 minute Bolero could be cut down to was 4 minutes 28 seconds which was 18 seconds longer than allowed in Olympic competition. Upon further reading they saw that time starts once a skater starts skating which is WHY their blades don't technically don't touch the ice right off the bat.
There was initially discussions as to whether they could use Bolero because there was no change in the tempo of the music. Thank you for posting this high quality version of this iconic routine.
Just to clarify- this is Ice DANCING; not skating
They also contracted for a custom arrangement of the original orchestration so that the cuts would not be jarring. Their custom arrangement was then recorded for them by a professional orchestra.

Bolero also represented a break in the tradition of using 3 different pieces of music that varied in mood and tempo in order to showcase a range of skating expertise. T&D wanted to use a single piece of music to tell a coherent story, not just various skating maneuvers. Christopher Dean is such a genius choreographer that I believe their skating more than compensated for any perceived monotory in the music. The dance was mesmerizing and breath-taking.
I remember this live, can't believe it's here! Possibly the best pairs performance (Olympics or non) I have ever seen in my life. Pure magic.
pegster6 - Pairs skating is somewhat different from ice dancing. Torvill and Dean are ice dancers, so there are not the same throws and lifts as in pairs skating. Be sure to check out their tribute to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" which is astonishing.
I remember watching this on tv with my family and we were all like entranced!
I remember my mom in tears...
The BEST Olympic program ever! The music and choreography are perfect!! UNMATCHED!!
Shelley D - Their version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" done at the 1994 Olympics was geniused and supremely difficult, nigh unto impossible, because of the 5/4 musical signature, which even dancers marvel at when they see it by these two.
Yusuru Hanyu and Gordeeva-Grinkov technically better than Torvill Dean!!
This is still my favorite. I remember how excited I was that they were skating to Bolero. This was and still is the most romantic ice skating I have ever witnessed. I cannot believe that after 30 years, no other performance has inspired me the way this one does.
I remember watching this as a 13 year old girl…. It’s still the most beautiful ice dance I’ve ever seen, they were mesmerizing. ❤
Their artistry crystallized in this single, flawless, magnificent performance that forever changed the game of ice dancing. Truly inspired choreography, matched only by its execution. This is one of life's rare moments. Thank you for allowing me to relive it. Deeper thanks to Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
My wife and I watched this together when it happened. Both of us were gobsmacked by the incredible artistry and grace of the program. It was much like watching a young Bobby Orr play in the NHL as an 18yr old. You knew immediately the sport had just been changed forever.
Everything about this performance just oozes perfection: the sexy, haunting, beautiful music, their chemistry together, precision, passion (you'd think they were a couple, wouldn't you?!) and even their costumes (I heard that Christopher Dean designed them). I seriously get goose bumps & choked up every time i watch this; I mean, that ending; are you KIDDING me?!. I was fortunate enough to see them dance live a few months after this performance & will never forget it; they did not disappoint in the least! Well-deserved perfect scores!!
After this execution broke every previous mold and standard, iceskating was never the same again. The bar was so highly raised by these two that future ice skaters ha no choice but to be more daring in technique and artistry.
How magic it was to watch this moment in 1984.
This performance is beyond competitive ice dance and the Olympics. It is mystical, hypnotic, seamless and timeless. They move as one, majestically building towards their final moments together on earth.
I remember it like it was yesterday.... lump's still in my throat...
Has there ever been a more magnificent performance since?
30 years after I first watched this on live TV, I still get chills. It's the embodiment of elegance, simplicity and grace. And I know from my training as a musician that the flashy technical stuff gets all the attention, but it takes an extraordinary amount of skill and focus to pull off the more artistically demanding works. What Torvill and Dean demonstrate here is pure artistic and athletic genius.
Thanks for posting this particular version, it's the best quality of them all!
Agree...this is the best version I've seen! I also get the chills...can't believe how beautiful and divine this performance is...
***** Just watched it on Catch up TV...wish I had recorded it when it was on...but I still have this to view at any time! Still brings tears to my eyes just the sheer beauty of it all....
So fluid. So flawless. I can scarcely believe it's been thirty-odd years since I saw them perform this free dance via television.
Brilliant. Never tire of watching this. Timeless.
I was 14 at the time and it still gives me the goosebumps. A man and a woman being perfectly in harmony with one another is what that music is all about.
50 years of watching ice dancing and nothing ever reached the level of this performance. Like swans in a courting ritual, you'd have thought that T & D were happily married to get to that level of intimacy and closeness. I'm still in awe 35 years later.
Now 40 years‘ anniversary and still brilliant, I love them ❤
Me too 😊😊👍👍
Saw them when they came to Australia 🇦🇺 at Boondall Entertainment Center absolutely fabulous will never forget ❤❤❤❤
Absolute perfection! Still unsurpassable even after all these years! Thank you, our dear Torville & Dean, for this unforgettable moment in time!
to me in my mind this ice dance is nothing but absolute sheer perfection
30 years onward, and I have seen nothing to equal this. I am so fortunate to have seen the performance in '84. Totally astonishing!
Watching that performance live 30 years ago still resonates with me today. I don't think we'll see another couple like them anytime soon.
Absolutely stunning. Choreography, execution, speed, flow. Years later and nobody comes close to this performance.
Bullshit. Plenty have come close and plenty have surpassed it.
@@Consrignrant like? I'd love some recommendations
I was 16 when I first saw this live on TV from Sarajevo. Its strange when watching it live. Anything can go wrong. The music, the artistry and the build up all had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up but inside I was so willing them on it was like "Oh God..please dont stuff up!" lol and ruin this moment. And of course they didnt get close to that so the magical memory now goes on forever. One of sports greatest moments - beautiful and inspiring. Like a visual work of art!
Like the Mona Lisa...it's totally a MASTERPIECE - never, ever to be beaten! I remember it just like you did...was in tears nearly all the way through...it was totally Beautiful and when over, I was totally exhausted...I watch this every single night because of it's classical beauty and I LOVE their costumes...oh God...so glad I have this to watch every day...thanks David!
Pauline Sheakey imagine to have been there to witness this piece of art
Thirty years ago, I watched this on my 18 inch Black and white RCA TV in my tiny four room apartment.
By far the most mesmerizing performance ever!!! Still gives me chills after all the years
And that performance was the first time I'd ever heard Bolero. Through the years I remembered the music as much as their performance.
Mesmeric. Unparalleled artistry. The greatest moment in sport I ever saw, and I'm not even a fan of ice dancing.
I've never been into ice skating but i remember the whole family sitting in our living room watching with amazement at this incredible performance and when i went to school the next day we were all talking about Torvill And Dean. Well done Jane and Christopher. You did your country proud.
A performance I will always remember. So wonderful, so perfect to the music, so different!
I saw this live and it is still the absolute BEST ICE DANCE ever done.
It was sensuous in 1984. After hundreds of views, it is still sensuous in 2014. BRAVO!!!!
Superb. Still makes you proud even today. I was 13 in 1984 and still remember sitting in front of the TV watching it. Timeless and ice dancing perfection
Because of this, no dance team can ever skate to "Bolero" again. Period!
If they do, well??
They better be damm good. They better walk on water....Oops silly me.
They better skate on water. And that said, this was the "Signature" that opened the door for every dance team since. By the way, we are still watching the best ever...
Jim C I've seen people attempt to skate to Bolero and it's always hilarious. 😂 That's a piece of music I wouldn't dare do a routine to no matter who I was.
Jim C - They are the best ever still. Of course, ice is frozen water, so... Nonetheless, I would never venture this piece were I an ice dancer. They have shared other brilliances with us, like their tribute to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five."
Still THE best 30 years later. And back then, there was more distinction between ice dance and pairs; this is so beautiful.
One of the most magical Olympic performances ever ⛸❤
Wow....almost 77,500 in just a very short time!! That's wonderful...so glad people are still appreciating this wonderful CLEAR version...thanks again David...
Sublime. Words are worthless to describe its perfection in beauty and performance. I love it.
PERFECTION, SOUL AND BEAUTY TOGHETHER, I AM AMAZED¡ BY THE WAY THEY MAKE ME FEEL INSIDE OF ME, EXTREMLY ARTISTIC. I WAS BORNED TWO YEARS AFTER OF THIS WONDER PERFORMANCE
30 years and still get goosebumps as if it were the first time i was seeing it.
The best ice dancers in the history of figure skating. This legendary dance, but also other of T&D still give me goosebumps
Yeh but torvill landed on her side and dean didn't
nothing beats it...the connection, the choreography, total team work. Still stunning all these years later.
I also remember this routine from the two of them like it was yesterday, pure magic and genius. Exquisite combination of music and skating .
The standard by which all Ice Dance performances will be held to, and NONE will ever compare! Perfection with a capital "P", still brings tears to my eyes 32 years later.....Thank You!
Nothing has compared since. Agree.
It was maybe the first time I had ever watched a performance where the commentators were so memorized, the even shut the f up for the entire performance. Every one was just silent, just the music and this couple, and it was theater, not just dancing on ice.
Literally poetry on Ice from the opening chord
Just goosebumps when watching it. The perfection of the art.
Thank you for posting and preserving in HQ this incredible moment in the history of ice skating.
Watched it live fourth years ago. It is an unforgettable, unsurpassable, and absolutely divine routine. Jeanne and Chris casted beautiful magic that night. ❤❤❤
Still getting goosebumps in 2017
Still stunning, still perfect. It mesmerised me 30 years ago and even now I feel the power of the story of those doomed lovers. Magical.
Какое прекрасное исполнение и замысел.
Заслуженная и ожидаемая золотая медаль на той Белой Олимпиаде.
Вечная память их тренеру.
Золотая медаль в танцах на льду в 1984 году это вершина карьеры этой великой пары.
Fantastici, formidabili, bravissimi, incantevoli, fenomenali, idilliaci, bravi, bravi, bravi 👏👏👏
Still the most Magical thing that was ever seen on TV
What a incredible performance!
Breathtaking!! simply beautiful. The best partnership ever.xx
I've never seen this so clearly......even when I watched it when it happened! Thanks for posting.
This is one of the go-to videos you watch when you want to see something extraordinary
The most beautiful Ice Dance I have ever seen and I've been watching these events since the 70s. Thank you for posting this high quality version.
A SUPERB RECORDING OF A UNFORGETABLE NIGHT OF ARTISTIC MAGIC. NEVER TO BE EQUALLED, LET ALONE SURPASSED.
Magnificent.
still amazing after all these years!
still dazzles today, 30 years later
Must admit David it IS the best quality...and the best angles too...all the others pale in comparison...so glad you shared it...
still get goose bumps watching them. terrific, and the clearest recording quality.
THE BEST ICE DANCING ROUTINE EVER! PERFECTION!
Absolutely magic! Amazing speachless!
absolutely superb recording, many congratulations on having the foresight to capture this and now enchant us with this all over again. The word that comes to mind from seeing this is TRUST. One false move on the part of either of them and there's a terrible accident waiting to happen... but it never does, that hand, that arm is always there. Incredible trust between two humans on ice. Again, thanks for uploading this!
For me, the best ever. And I'm happy I found this recording. perfect!
I don't know what happened with my comment.that I submitted a few days ago. Absolutely the best FD in the history of figure skating. I still get goosebumps watching it..
They are and always will be THE gold standard for ice dance. I loved this when I saw it then and love it still. Thank you for posting the footage. It is the only copy of the original winning routine I've seen.
They're hiding the fact that was SARAJEVO 84 . I Love them, still watch them, but I don't forgive them,
On 29th anniversary of Bolero Day, I came here to watch this amazing dance once again because it's the best quality on you tube. Thank you David for uploading it.
still get goosebumps wen i c this winning routine cant believe its 30 yrs ago
Mesmerizing! I remember this well, and yes, watching the 2014 Olympics made me want to watch it again! Absolutely beautiful. Obviously the requirements for Ice Dance have changed over the years with a lot more "tricks" being done now.
The best performance...ever..
Thanks for sharing one of the greatest performances ever, most definitely on ice, I always enjoy watching Christopher and Jane, they are simply amazing xxx
I loved it then and still love it now - they were amazing!
T & D A CLASS OF THEIR OWN
perfect music/ perfect skating
Fantastic such precision and artistry
Torville & Dean, e type jags, Winston Churchill & Royal family. Makes me proud to be British. 🇬🇧
The crowd just lifted! A seamless performance that gives you goosebumps!
This still brings me to tears. Just wonderful.
I was lucky enough to see them perform live at Worlds later that year! They were equally flawless and won gold that day as well!
no skate sounds, absolutely breathtaking, still after 33 years perhaps the greatest ice dancing routine EVER.
Thanks for this HD quality!!! This is the most stunning thing I have ever seen. I am enchanted and am watching everything they have done. Beyond perfection! I am such a fan.
Me too. I was actually there, crying. Delighted when they won SARAJEVO 84 OLIMPICS. For some reason they're ashamed that they won in my country.??? But I'm proud enough of myself and them.
STILL, one of the most amazing routines I've ever seen! Brilliant!
After all these years, it still doesn't get much better than this.
Nach 30 Jahren immer noch die beste Performence!
Broadcast on Croatian tv"TV KALENDAR"..It happened on this day ..30 years ago(14.feb.84.),just shows performance, marked as perfect and used like"classic" for next generation of ice dancing competitors.Just nice to watch.
Wow. Amazing!
As they say 'Poetry in motion'. One of the all time great Olympic performances.
Great video! It's like I'm sitting right on the ice and no jib-jabbing from any commentators. T&D still give me chills when I watch them. What a great moment in time this was
I can remember watching this live and being completely enraptured. Every time I watch I am filled with chills and goose-pimples! My Mum and I watched every performance we could of these two. Nottingham, where they are from and where they practiced, is about 25 miles from where we lived then. Absolutely incomparable - without their talent, bravery, and dedication the skaters today would be back in the stone age!
Gorgeous. I remember watching it as a kid in '84 (Olympics were held in my country - the then Yugoslavia) - we were all so very deeply touched & impressed with this performance. It was an instant hit with everyone; it became a matter of pride to be a host for such a marvel! I remember our legendary skating comentator crooning like anything over it. Nobody could accept the rating controversy that errupted. It's still the most memorable skating performance ever, for me. Bolero = Torvill & Dean.
