Yeah, I agree - we need to stop thinking of a squad as a starting XI and their backups, and more as a collection of options to best handle any and all problems that might come up over a long season. I really don’t think you have look too hard to see a need for a player like Calafiori. At CB Saliba and Gabriel pretty much played every minute of every game last year - we can’t do that to them again. Especially not after a summer of international tournaments and especially not with the expanded CL format. No one should underestimate just how gruelling this season is going to be, and we’re going to need to find ways to bring everyone’s minutes down. Then you look at our LB options - Timber’s coming back from a year out so there’s likely to be setbacks, Zinchenko and Tomiyasu can’t play more than 4 games in a row without picking up calf problems, and Kiwior isn’t really comfortable there. And you also need to be thinking about other options this might open up, such as going 3 at the back. Again, I’m not 100% confident it will actually happen yet - you never know with Italian players - but I can definitely see how he’d fit and I don’t think he would want for minutes.
@@BB-ck7xe we already play 3 at the back. At least most of the time. When we have the ball (we have the ball 60 to 70% of each 90 minutes)…. When we have the ball white goes forward and our LB tucks in or falls back closer to Gabriel and we are in a back 3 while we attack. So most of the time California will be in CB as part of a back 3. Plus he played left back in previous years of his life.

Kiwior has had some competent but not spectacular appearances at LB, and notably a few shaky matches in the CB position, which has been a surprise based on his performances in Italy, but the PL has a habit of doing that. Calafiori is just an upgrade as LB/CB. Kiwior can be taken a bit like Sambi Lokonga, a 20-25m signing where risk/reward was worth a punt but didn’t work out (if Arteta has decided he is ok with letting him go).

Golden boots are usually won with less than 30 goals when there are 38 league games. Even if we sign R9 there will always be games in a season we fail to score or score 1 goal. This is why you look at the whole season to judge the output. There is a myth that the best strikers don’t miss open chances. I have seen Kane and haaland miss many open chances.

Have you not seen his injury record??? He has missed over 150 games despite being 22 years old. This season is the only season he has played with no injuries the previous 5 seasons as a senior player he has barely been able to stay fit enough to play.

I prey this deal does not happen the guys injury record is worse than Tomiyasu. He only missed a few games last season but the season before that he missed 16 games, then before that 20 games and then before that he missed 33 games and before that he had a injury that kept him out for a full year. I do not mean a season he missed an entire year. He has missed a total of 151 games due to injury at the age of 22. This is going back to him being 17 and there is no reason to think his body will hold up in this league, why take the gamble??? I am not entertaining the idea of signing this injury prone players when we have seen how much it hurts when they are missing. If we had Partey fit all season along with those who were fit we would have won the league. So many fans are so keen we go and spend 200 plus million on Calafiori, Pedro Neto and Osimhen whenall of them have issues with staying fit particularly Calafiori. This is so stupid and we cant blame bad luck when the season is underway and we have lots of players missing if we keep signing injury prone players like Tierney, Tomiyasu, Zinchenko, Jesus and keeping Partey and Smith Rowe. If you sign players with a p[roven track record of injury issues then you are asking for an injury crisis during the season.

We are not buying a big striker and a winger. Just one. But center mid is our top priority and should be. Goals are not an issue for us.

Arteta is more skewed towards inverted full backs and Calafiori suits well into that category, he will unlock the midfield
