2006 was the year Justin brought sexy back, Canon released the Powershot A630 and Snoop seduced the f#@k out of us. Coincidence? Methinks not. Let's swim back in time.

Yeah these old little Canons are seriously underrated! I did a video on the Canon A420, an even older camera (I think), a couple months back and the results astounded me! I mean like you said, the noise is trash, and there are so many bad things about it, but it's really great for taking your skills further. Or even just slapping you with a brick of nostalgia. You inspire creativity in me all the time, and using these crapcams actually is so liberating! Oh, and surprisingly, the JPEGs are surprisingly workable!

Great review. I bought one of these in 2006 when they came out and still have it. I have had some great pictures out of it. I started to use it for holidays and motorbike trips where talking my EOS and all the bits and pieces was not practical

Yeah shutter lag lag is definitely something I don't miss about the old digicams...I remember trawling through dcresource (acquired into dpreview at some point) to see how good/bad the shutter lag was.

Excellent detailed review. I had an A620 and an A650 a while back, the A650 in particular made great 12 megapixel images with the same 35-210 lens as the Canon G9. As you mentioned you want to shoot at iso 80 or 100 if possible. The A620 was good too, that's the 6 megapixel version of the A630.

Thanks for the video! Glad to see you review a Canon camera and mention CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit).
I shoot the Canon SX1xx series because of their fully manual capability, AA batteries, higher resolution and, of course, the use of CHDK hack for raw images.
My SX1xx's are also hacked three other ways: external battery, detachable LCD viewfinder and remote flash sync. The flash sync capability not only permits remote flash, but also allows one to take advantage of the leaf shutter to darken the background relative to the flash. With these hacks, one enjoys the features and resolution of a recent Canon G-series camera for a fraction of the price!
Additionally, I develop the raw files with the Filmic RGB module in Darktable. So, I get all of the goodness of the CCD and post, film highlight rolloff!

Surprising output from that camera. Do the images suffer when the zoom is engaged? How pocketable is it on a scale of 1-10? I like that you touch on the intangibles such as the viewfinder experience and how it handles. I’m still teetering on these digicams can’t seem to pull the trigger on one. Somehow they don’t fit in my small collection or I can’t see myself using one very often. I like looking and learning from your show and tells, however. You keep tempting me, lol. 😅

I remember that it came with a program that let you shoot from the computer with the camera connected by USB, you could even see what you were shooting because it worked as a webcam. It also allowed you to change the sounds that the firmware made. I changed them for Japanese drum sounds and that's how it stayed until now.

Oh, no! You're letting out the secret! PowerShot A series prices are going to blow up. I have a few dozen digicams and some DSLRs, and I am consistently drawn to grab my PowerShot A560 when I walk out the door. It's light, has a great grip and feel, loves light flares and reflections, and even the low resolution video is great. I highly recommend this range of PowerShot cameras, just don't pay SD1000 prices. Speaking of which, much easier to hold and operate one-handed than the SD series.

I was an old film shooter, even making a living for awhile with an old Nikon. Then I sold cameras for a bit. After that I wanted to try digital without going deep in. So, the wife and I bought a Powershot A630 to try out. It was a pretty good little camera for the day and what it was. I did the third-party software and was able to shoot raw, but never used it much at the time. I finally gave that little A630 away to a kid a few years ago. Now with decent DSLRs, a pile of lenses, and some mirrorless gear, I still have a soft spot for that model though.

Digicams have always been Kool, even before they were called 'DigiCams'(?), because they were so practical and immediate with cool pics and they took away the fear of the cost of random experimental shooting with film. I still have a slew of early DigiCams that I still grab to go for a walk and catch that photo opportunity. They have been for years my EDC/every day Carry. Today for fun I grabbed my very old(2002?) Toshiba PDR-3330 that still works as new and still looks nearly new, to go shoot Fall colors and Ducks and Herons along river. It is a 3.2_mp CCD with 100 to 300 ISO, a Canon zoom lens F-2.9 _ 4.8 and 35mm _ 100mm, and has a digital view screen and viewfinder, and uses SD cards and easily available DbL A batteries. $500.00 new. $5.00 _ $25.00 today.

Everyone seems to go along with the claim that all the newer cameras are better than the old stuff. Yet when I show them pictures taken on my old A80 or A570IS, they're unable to tell which pictures were taken with an old camera and which ones were taken with a new one. In low light it's no contest due to the better sensor sensitivity of newer sensors, but out in the sun it's a very even match. .

Nice video! I had an A85 that I just sold and I have had the A500/600/700 line in the past. Fun little cameras but WAY too expensive these days. If anyone wants a similar camera but doesnt want to pay the huge price, you can grab an A series Fuji Finepix, with the incredible SuperCCD sensor (starting in the A610, which I have and love) for half the price of what these Axxx series Powershots are being overpriced at. I just won an Ebay auction on an A825 for $11, so great deals are out there. The Nikon CoolPix S series (look for an S1, S2 or S3) is another great alternative that is much cheaper. @@helo2729 Depends what you consider “cheap”. I would stick with the Canon Powershot G or S series. The S30-S70, which are smaller versions of the G1-G6, not the SD ELPH cameras people are overpaying for. The Fujifilm FinePix A series starting with the A610. The E550 and F series are not cheap these days. Or the early Panasonic LUMIX FX and LX series, which are basically Leica C-Lux and D-Lux cameras for a fraction of the price. The rest are all hit or miss with a lot more miss IMO

@@helo2729I just recently started picking up the picture taking big again and it was receiving a free Panasonic "Leica Lens" Lumix model DMC-LC33 as my workplace stopped using it and went with an iPad .
It or any of the lower megapixel point and shoot but they are usually $5 to $15 each.
The catch is these use MB SD cards not GB cards.
I now own 5 or so older of this style and only the Panasonic let's me use a Gigabyte SD card. The others say "card error". Have to specify MB SD card to maximum I believe 2gb or expect problems.
The earliest Canon PowerShot series can be bought really cheap however they require Flashcard or Compact Flash 1 and the matching battery which aren't always cheap.
Another issue is the auto focus mechanism on these are made of hair thickness plastic and eventually jam or break, so try to not be continuing to power up and down making the lens pop frequently. They are difficult to find ppl to repair it.
Be cautious about buying "Minolta" brand as the plastic used to make them breaks if you breathe on them too hard. Nice looking but they break easily.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  Рік тому

Photos being blurred has less to do with the camera and more to do with the settings you dial in. If you zone focus with a fast shutter speed and deep depth of field with F5.6 on a small sensor, you’ll be fine with any camera that has manual capabilities. However having a camera with higher ISO capabilities allows you to work with higher shutter speeds in more challenging light so something like the later Canon G or S models or Panasonic LX line up or Ricoh GRs are a better suited digicam for street.

Don’t be limited by the model number. Most of the Powershot A series are remarkably similar and looking around should find you one for $20 with patience and research.
