Magnum P.I. made Selleck one of the most well known actors on the planet and was a huge hit. It catapulted his career which is still going strong 40 years later. He made the right choice to honor his commitments back in the day.
I saw the screen test he did for Indiana Jones, with Sean Young, who was up for the part of Marion, and didn't get it. But it was a good screen test for Selleck. And you can imagine him doing the part. I can't remember where I saw it, maybe a making of video, and also Lucas and Spielberg talked about how they wanted Tom badly but could not get him out of his contract for Magnum. And apparently the art work they did for the Indiana Jones character in pre-production looked almost exactly like Tom Selleck,
Yes it was on the making of and you can probably find the screen test online somewhere. Tom was pretty great, but Sean Young didn't suit the part of Marion at all.
Let's see...he lost out on Indy for one of the most iconic tv series of the 1980s...may not _quite_ have Indy's cultural impact but not a bad deal any day.
Tom Selleck shouldn't have one regret about his career choices. I've seen multiple renowned actors play the same role -- Willy Loman in Death of A Salesman, for example -- and each has brought their own spin to it, each excellent in it's own right.
Tom could have done both projects, if he had known Magnum P.I was gonna be put on hold, he could have finished off the first Indiana Jones movie and been on the pilot episode of Magnum P.I right after Raider of the Lost Ark had wrapped up production.
If Tom seleck had done Indiana Jones then that means that Harrison Ford would have been in 3 men and a little lady. That would be funny watching him drive around England looking for a posh school for his friends daughter to go to!
@@easyenetwork2023 Adjusted for inflation Tom Selleck was making 1.2 million per episode at it's peak. 162 episodes, that's way over 100 million, and in only 8 years. Now there is no question Harrison made a ton off Indiana Jones and it led to other movie roles, but that was over decades, Tom made that in only 8 seasons. I think he's not too worried.
Tom would have done great and Raider would still have been amazing. However, Harrison brought a certain charm to the role. Harrisons half smile that he does works perfectly for the character, like when Indy looks in the side mirror during the truck chase to see Nazis and his expression changes. Tom would have played it differently.
After watching Magnum PI for the first time, I think Tom would have made a better Indiana Jones. Not to take anything away from Harrison. It would have been played differently for sure. Wish we could have both versions!
And let's be honest, if Selleck were to have done Raiders his co-star would have been Sean Young and because of Kasden's script and Spielberg's direction, I am sure it still would have been a hit, but there is no way it would have led to a huge franchise that it became with Ford as the star!
Karen's Marion was perfect. It was brilliant when she married Indiana in the Crystal Skulls. Tom Selleck is old now but he was a good actor in Magnum PI. I think if at the time he'd done Raiders Of The Lost Ark it would've been at least as good as what they made. Raiders would've helped Tom's overall career a lot more than Magnum. As Tom said, he took a pass on Raiders only on the principle of keeping to his contract with CBS. CBS should've delayed Magnum and let Tom do Raiders, because it was such a great opportunity for Tom. Both Tom and CBS would've ultimately benefitted a lot from the result of Tom doing Raiders. That being said I appreciate all of Harrison Ford's work. I'm a fan of all of Harrison Ford's movies, and he's done a lot of them.

Film & tv history are rife with casting stories..good to get the straight story of this one.

In my humble opinion it would of worked

Feel like there’s a world where he kills Indiana jones maybe even more than Harrison and we think it’s crazy to assume anyone else could play him
He must have made a lot more money from Magnum. 8 seasons of a hit TV show vs a few movies, no contest.
You’re kidding right? Harrison made a bunch of money off of Indiana Jones. He made over $100 million off of Indiana Jones.

There is a deep fake video montage of Indiana Jones, except with Tom Selleck as Jones. It's quite interesting to see what could
have been.
