Useful tips on site selection, construction of vermicompost shed, selection and growth of worms, charging of the unit using worms, management, harvesting, benefits and sale have been shared in this video. The vermicomposting unit if coupled with a vegetable farm or kitchen garden is very useful. We can use cattle dung, cow dung, poultry waste, grass clippings, fruits and vegetable residues, agricultural waste, straw, waste paper, cardboard etc. for turning waste into useful vermicompost. Here we recommend use of Australian Redworms Eisenia fetida in the composting shed. The worm can double its population in 3 months and is quite tolerable to unfavorable temperature and humidity conditions, if any. Not only the solid vermicompost but its liquid formulations are equally beneficial. The plant growth, flowering and fruiting is enhanced. We have observed fast worm growth if dried powdered leaves of peepal Ficus religiosa tree are mixed in the substrate being used for worm growth. If a small vermicomposting unit is started by an institution or an NGO, it can provide inspiration and practical training to local youth, women and farmers for undertaking beneficial and ecofriendly initiatives thus improving the quality of local environment and human health.
