Episode two of 'Living With An ID.3' covers motorway ranges, the ID.3 app, 100kW charging with Ionity and a couple of tricks that you may not know exist within the software. I also demonstrate how affordable it can be to charge one of these cars if you shop around for your energy provider!

Ionity as mentioned in the video is expensive - €0.73 per kWh / UK £0.69 but if you have a mobility service provider account (like the card in the video) you can get a discounted rate if you're a paid member.
That’s just too expensive for electricity.

@Concrete Head even the arm rest seem cheap old school.. and the lights switch should be mounted on the right hand side not the left hand side, it's left hand side for the EU.. while the UK gets it Inbetween the info screen and wheel.. like what?
A total rip off sure you can take out a passport subscription but just how many charges fo you have to fo to equal the 216 bucks a year for the subscription to equivalent by by guess if your a dash and charge your good but the infrequent visitor will just be better going elsewhere and I wonder how many of the free subscribers that come with there car renew if they actually broke down the costs e.g. filling an Id 4 from zero would cost a whopping 53.13 gbp who says diesel is expensive that’s just a rip off the sooner the government regulates the max charge the better even at its worst we’re still only 25p per kWh e.g. 19.25 gbp to do the same at home or commercial rate they should be ashamed
@Concrete Head Have to agree with your remarks about specs and pricing. I thought dealer was joking when he said I'd have to spend €44k (before grant) to get a model with a reversing camera. Then when I sat in the demo 1st Plus I couldn't get over how cheap the interior looked when compared to my own Golf. So it was a case of definitely not for me at those prices
The range being shown is from a 'guess-o-meter' (GOM). It estimates your range based on your most recent driving. It tells you the range you'll have if you continue driving at this speed. It is *not* a measure of battery capacity. Hopefully by the time the ID.3 software update to v3 will enable actual battery percentage be shown on the dash and not via the infotainment system. GOM will be higher if you're driving at 80km per hour than if you're driving at 120km per hour. It's useful but it's not an absolute measure. Living without a charger at home is limiting but not impossible. If you can charge at home then night rate timed charging is a bit of a no brainer. As we've recently learned (Feb-March 2022) the unit price of electricity matters. The most interesting learning I have from 8 years of EV driving is that your driving habits can save you on energy - not flooring at 120km per hour is beneficial to both EV and ICE drivers. The fascination of non-EV drivers with range is odd to me. Look at the typical commute and ask yourself does a vehicle with a 350km+ range suit you. For those longer trips ask yourself if a one stop along the way is really life changing and such a hassle. My experience is that no it's not after 8 years EV'ing around Ireland.

I’m so excited to get started with an EV…. but, the charging infrastructure juuuuuust isn’t quite there yet 😞 OK I normally do 20 miles a day, but 2-3 times a year we go to Scotland which is 300 miles. I want that to be a relaxed experience, but it seems you need a different “card” for every different charger supplier. What if I pull up at a services where I don’t have the right card or app? If I had a Tesla I wouldn’t worry, the supercharger network is incredible… but the premium on the car (and waiting list) just doesn’t seem worth it
ID3 fast charging and pre-heating are amazing and the winter range test at 120 Kmh is outstanding.

I was in Galway using the charging station at a Circle K while waiting for a appointment at GUH, being the only EV user I let the ESB charger run its course while sipping my coffee...When I discover the “overstay” penalty !!! Cost of energy €2.42, overstay penalty €4.60, duration connected 49 min!! I should always read the small prints!!😠
What is their thinking behind 30 minute limit? You can't get any good mileage after 30 min, especially on a slower charger.

Thanks Nobby. Great videos. Got my eNiro in February and I can't explain just how good it is. You need to take one for a full days test drive. I've covered over 3200 kms so far and this cost approx €40 in charging at home using night rate. I'm getting over 400kms range. A full 64kw charge only costs €4.48 at home. An EV is so easy to live with. Once you get one, you'll ask yourself why you didn't do it soon. I'll be saving about €4000 on diesel costs in a year, not to mention higher servicing and maintenance costs and road tax.
Great to hear that Alan, I've had largely positive experiences with EVs too, the odd charging issue but that can be the public network, having a charger at home makes all the difference.
This is a big experiment for me as we live rurally in Donegal and the fast charging network is poor. All going well so far thankfully.
I like your hacks (tips) we have an ID3 & a Zoe 135GT I always suggest to people who want to get an EV to make sure it has CCS charging and ideally the car should have been designed as an EV from the ground up & not converted from an ICE. Remember that a PHEV is not an electric car!
Brilliant series 👍. Just to support your experience with another real world consumption example with my ID.3 in Germany: I had to do a 300km round trip, 250km Autobahn at 135km/h when possible, 50km country/city roads with lower speed. Outside temperature: 9 deg., Inside: 20 deg. ID.3 consumption was 21.0 kWh/100km. I had to top up at an HPC to get home. When I returned from the restroom I could just leave right away...

Keep the unlock button pressed down on your key fob and all windows will go down together. The same happens when you press and hold down the lock button, all windows will close.

Insurance:
Had some trouble getting insured myself. Short version: Mixture of my years of no claims bonus (or lack of) and having a learner as a named driver on my policy. Eventually got a great deal with EV Insurance Ireland.
Charging:
Good to mention to other charging points available, such as at the shops where it can often be free.
We have a 151 Nissan leaf and a 142 Opel Insignia Diesel. €350 each to insure. Fully comp, full bonus protection. We are in our late 40s early 50s. Chill Insurance
Thanks for posting. Should receive my ID.3 start of November. Live NE of Stockholm so I guess my range will be impacted by the approaching winter. Have the luxury of a garage with heating . . about 14c and an ID charger.

Great video’s Nobby, using the sat is great, it still does not always read the speed limits on the road specially road works. The second point I would like to know without going into zap map or similar the sat nav should you know where to stop and charge like the Tesla

On the pre condition vw please allow the battery to warm or cool whilst on charge so short trips the efficiency improves

Thanks for the video. Am in the UK, and my main worry is that i dont have a garage or driveway (my car is parked on a street). Id like to see videos about extended use of an EV only using non-home charging.
Main question for you is, how much miles do I do and ask yourself if you're willing to sit in a fuel station for 40 mins per week (depending on if your daily commute is 20-30 miles per day).
had a look on ZapMap or PlugShare? I charge at work but if they are stingy I could charge up around to corner on a slower charger at a cheaper rate.
Very good review . Would definitely consider an EV though if by the street living (no driveway) would have to research charging point locations carefully . As for the ID3 would possibly opt for the 77kWH version or the forthcoming IONIQ 5 as an alternative which promises to be a game changer or charger !
Will have an Ioniq in a couple of weeks. Quite a bit dearer in many trims than a ID.3 but a bigger car.
Ive worked out millage wise a full battery in England (as in miles not KM) would be about 182 miles for full charge driving around 70/75 mph. That’s not bad as driving at 60 (like I do) would probably be over 200 and more around my city. Plus when it’s warmer would be even better. Very usable EV that ID as charges quite good too. The longest journey I tend to do is 220-240 miles and stop around half way for lunch etc. Usually about an hour. The ID3 would be perfect EV companion for such a trip. Great review. Thank you
The fast charging really makes all the difference! 17kWh/100kms seems to be easy enough in summer

Nobby, I love this series, we nearly bought an ID3 but we were unsure about software glitches and went for an ioniq instead as we didn't have the time to wait but seeing how your demo car is performing I wonder if we made the right decision?

It's a weird Navi. Destination is a charger and it says please charge to get their with that amount SOC left 🙄.

You set-up a wifi hub off your own phone so any network should work, once you've coverage as you say.
Have you broadband at home? If so you could use wifi in car if parked close to house. Don't think it works as yet, but should after update.

They do prefer longer journeys but warmer temperatures, absolutely.

@@NobbyOnCars Hi Nobby. According to the VW website the Heat Pump is a € 1,400.00 option on ID3. A bit on the pricey side but worth having in winter. ID 1st, which is the car you have, probably comes with one as standard

In Germany it is an option. In the Nordic countries it is standard - at least so far. Don't know what it is in Ireland.

I do a 160km motorwat round trip for work every day, I am thinking of ordering soon for a 212 ID3. As a plus I will get free charging at work for me it's a no brainer but am I missing something? I will get a home charger aswell for the weekends. Is it ok for constant motorway driving?
Also would you recommend going for a style or family over the life or business? Is the extra options worth the extra money.
Home charging and an ID.3 and you probably wouldn't even need the office charging (tho great to have that too).
At distances like that also check out a Tesla Model 3 SR+ (slightly better range, supercharger network and no worries on range ever)...
Especially if you use EV focused renewable energy supplier (in UK you can get down to 5p per kWh (or about 3p per mile!!).
EVs for folks doing big mileage like that are a massive boon!
Worth mentioning that the autopilot on a Model 3 is mind blowing on long journeys.
@@aidanapword I'm thinking the opposite hopefully I won't need to charge it much at home if I have the free work charging... WRT the model 3 don't think I could afford it after grants (here in Ireland) I can get the ID3 for 33k..
@@stevenrafferty7665 ID.3 is really compelling ... and even if you didn't have workplace charging home would more than suffice (might need mid range one?) ... of the 33k my car has done in 4 years (nothing next to your projected, I know) ... I have used public chargers for *maybe* 3k of those.
Octopus Go in the UK was paying people use electricty (including to charge their cars) for a few hours on a few select days in 2020 ... even "free"er than "free" (although hardly normal).

brave leaving it so low and hoping the chargers are working/not ICEd. Great idea to do a week without home charging - lots of people will need to drive like this if they don’t have a drive/garage, but it often gets ignored by reviewers. If you’re doing this long term you’ll probably find tactics like free supermarket or other slower chargers near your home/work where you can top up without waiting for it

Review going well for ID3. One thing I would like to point out because you have no electric window switches in the back. At some stage you may find yourself(an adult) in the back with child locks on the doors, you have no way to put down the window to let yourself out! One of the down falls of the lovely looking suicide doors on BMW I3 and Mazda MX-30. Hyundai Ioniq 5 out tomorrow and I always thought it was Hyundai Ioniq 45 turns out only 3000 Ioniq 45's been made with some extra goodies for the first 3000 orders. Do you know if you will be doing a review of that car in the near future?

There are window switches in the back. The driver has to press "rear" to operate the rear windows remotely.
VW have completely nailed the interior. Modern but not over the top.
That is what has got me to be interested in the car. Not bad at all.
Interior fit and finish very poor when compared to a Mk7 Golf and when you see what an ID3 model that's equipped with something as basic as a reversing costs you'd be inclined to think VW were taking the piss

Hi there, I anticipate to soon have a commute of about 53 miles (85.3 kilometers) to and from a training center. So 106 total commuting miles (170.6 kilometers) a day for about 4-5 days a week. I'm thinking of saving up to buy an EV and wondering if this may be a viable option. Gas is getting annoyingly expensive. Thoughts?

Some rates are 26c/kWh. Faster chargers like 50kW are 30c. So fast charging this car in public in Ireland would be around €17.40. Some retail places like Lidl have free chargers. Some management companies are allowing the installation, you'd want your own designated space though.
Maybe look at home chargers ?
Good idea. But very short video. 7kW wallbox installed (often with government grant to off-set cost) and the ultimate convenience making petrol stations look positively glacial in terms of 'speed' (plug in and walk away).

Do you think its reasonable to have an id3 with just a 3pin charger at home? as I rent I cant fit a 7w.

It’s doable but the battery would take you probably 36 hours to charge from zero with a plug. If you can factor in a weekly stop to charge somewhere public, it’s not a deal breaker.
with the Regen charging (braking). How many miles / KM can you realistically put back in the battery? is it that tiny it's not worth thinking about?
It's not massive amounts, going downhill you will put in a good bit but it won't be 100kms or anything
It depends a lot on the elevation. If you are up in a mountain (say holiday at the Alps) and going down, it can be significant

No, owners of them tell me 18 or so is typical

EVM mentions in his video on the ID3 that they don't like short journeys, IIRC it's because the ID3 heats its batteries
@@JetsetDruid normal for an EV, I think. Thing is (if you have a driveway!) this is largely just an academic fact because car is full every time you need it to be (and with far less effort and much lower cost) than if you have to rely on a petrol station.

The We Connect ID app doesn’t track the car, it shows the location of the app on the map - that may change but at this time that’s it.

A lot of people in uk press are asking where has the vw quality gone in interiors. Not sure i haven't sat in one of these though I've seen issues with the infotainment system and apple car play etc...has this been sorted. I do think vw have forgot some of there fundamentals with this one however would love to know....What is it like I've seen these cars driving past also another major question how do you compare a kwh to a mpg...
The common denominator is kms so you can only really look at cost. €2 would get you around 125-150kms from one of these. What would that distance cost in a petrol or diesel?
The interior is slightly below what you get in a Golf.

Quite a few UA-cam videos on the ID4 range. No where near 500kms sorry. About 200miles at motorway speed Ok weather.
@@NobbyOnCars that’s interesting as consumers we think wltp is more realistic do we think the 500km wltp advertised for ID4 is ev-gate? The id3 wltp seems fair but the ID4 wltp a bit hairy by account but wltp is supposed to be standardised test should give a realistic result ?

I was considering an ID4 as a first EV and as a consumer I should trust the 500km wltp for 77kw 1st edition 200 miles would only be less than two thirds of that which is pretty poor one would expect a minimiUm of 80% of wltp 400km

@@user-ms3xp9ep5q WLTP is still only a test that produces a result on a given day in specific conditions... doesn’t mean it will always deliver that. I think consumers have an expectation that it will give those figures day in, day out. EVs are sensitive to climate temperature amongst other variables.
Great real world review. Not for me yet . Waiting for the infrastructure to catch up. E.g if both chargers were occupied you'd be there hour and a half paying 69p Kwh.
I have been driving an id3 for 4 months now. Charging at home most of the time using electricity from my solar panels. Average of 14.7 kWh per 100 km. But I presume that will go up in winter.
Excellent economy and using solar, that must feel pretty damn cool.
@@NobbyOnCars new home, 10kwh max capacity solar panels with a 12kw battery. I achieved about 93% self sufficiency in the last 6 months, and I have been driving my ID 3 for around 5.000 km now. Of course the investment upfront is not cheap but I am confident that it will be profitable and my main motivation is environmental anyway. Greetings from Belgium.
I would keep a little generator in the boot in case of emergencies.

Better example of charging would be somewhere where you do not have to waste your time in a car but do something like grocery shopping. But I guess VW commanded to you to show overprized 2 stalls of Ionity.

Interesting episode I have to say given that I do remain in the "sceptical" camp. A couple of observations, tho' I know the purpose of this episode was to see what it was like if you weren't using your home charger but I always thought/assumed it was bad for the battery to run it down that low plus even if u were only stopped for we'll say enough of a charge to get you home, depending on the distance it means you're stuck there until there's enough charge and then you're away whereas with a standard what is now defined as being ICE car, ten minutes or less if you're doing a splash and dash puts the fuel in the car and you're away. I must admit as interesting as it is I'm still not sold I must say.
Filling up with petrol/diesel will always win in terms of time. I'd imagine 20-80% is the sweet spot for charging if it was over a sustained period, it's always tempting to go to 100% to want the range though.
@@NobbyOnCars True but I think apart from the initial price of the car and indeed the obvious range issues, I think the main issue towards the greater uptake in EVs is the infrastructure isn't there yet as alot of the chargers use different methods of payment and/or connections plus there are alot that when you get to them are out of order and what do u do then?
@@stevencampbell1150 This is why Tesla drivers rave about the Supercharger network. Always multiple chargers, nearly always working and no app / payment at the “pump”.
VW gave us 1st Edition owners a pre loaded charge card with 600 euro on it. To be honest it's awkward trying to make use of it. Really a home charger is needed as you say. Otherwise stress levels would be high and there wouldn't be much of a saving over an efficient ice. I drive up to the side of the house and plug it in a couple of times a week. It's very convenient

The apparent inefficiency at 120 is a bit concerning, are EVs ready for people whom mostly drive on motorway? Like what is the realistic range at 120?
It’ll vary - could be 250 kms at best. If I was doing serious motorway commuting I’d want the 77 kWh battery I think
I get 200km in my 2018 Nissan Leaf 40kw battery at 80km/h on A roads, motorway 110km/h I get 170km , not really suitable if you do long motorway journeys regularly, having said that I love the car , much better driving experience than ice.
What exactly trim is this one ? So confusing with numbers of trims and not so clear if this is available in this trim already or not .

The charging infrastructure still needs a LOT of work. The cars are coming at a relatively high rate with numbers manufacturers joining the fray. Quick charging stations are going to be the thing that slows down the adoption of EV’s.
It’s just a matter of what is accelerated first - chargers or more people buying EVs

Great series, I can't wait to get my ID.3 Pro Life in April/May :) I will use it to commute to work mostly (10 km each), but also to visit my parents who are living 270 km away, I think this is the perfect car for it. In the summer I might be able to do the full range, or I will just fast-charge for 10-15 minutes, easy. I absolutely loved the car when I did the test drive.
You'll easily get the full range in Summer. I've done 420km on a charge in the first week of October, driving with manners. Temptation always there to drive harder as they are quick

In order to get 100kw charging - it will still charge the car but it may not be the higher speeds

VW recommend only charging to 100% if you’ll be driving in the next 12 hours afterwards
VW recommend that regular charging at home should be to 80%.
@@scottvessey915 not sure if there’s any discharge from the battery if it’s not driven. I’ve a drone that will drain some battery if it’s not used within a timeframe and is at 100%

It's all nice, the total cost of ownership is lower but it is awfully inconvenient if you need to use your car a lot. Here's my objections:
(1) You need to have a garage to charge the car at home, which is something that most people don't have; the majority of people need to rely on public chargers; I have a spot in a collective garage in a condominium so I'd need to have authorisation to install a recharger.
(2) if you're using it as a city car (rarely doing more than 70KM/day), it's perfectly OK but if you're traveling long distances you can't stop for 20m every 150KM - assuming that the charging spot is not taken by someone else; imagine if you have to go catch a plane in another city
A garage or a driveway? Why would you need a garage? It wouldn’t take 20 mins to do 150kms if you found a quick enough charger. Easier to live with in a city though, I’ll give you that!

Really like the ID3. If I hadn’t got what I have, I’d seriously consider one as VW currently have 0% finance on them, and if you can pick one up before the end of February to beet the return of the old vat rate.
I’ve heard if you order it before then the dealers will absorb any increases

Not true, if you have ordered before 1st December they will absorb vat increase. I have id 4 ordered and garage have come back and are looking for extra 2% vat.

Fake news, it has been known from a long time that the cars need a software update at the dealers this spring.

@@NobbyOnCars - It is fake news, as it has been known for a very very long time that the cars would need a software update this spring. The prebookers in my country were told this last year, before they took delivery.
We own a ID.3 1st. and there is no recall notice. We know it will need the 2.1 update soon, to get rid of some software glitches and activate OTA updates for the future.
Calling it a recall, is a bit over the top, as recalls normally involve high risk items. This is just for a software update, that in the future will be done by download OTA.
@@ACPilot So are you saying the software 2.0 is fake news or are you saying the other poster saying a recall is out is fake news? The 0783 is very much in existence, I've been driving this car for a month now and it hasn't had any software issues. I drove the ID.3 within days of it landing off a ship and that version of the software did have issues.
Why are these hi tech chargers out in the pissing rain without a simple roof covering?
Some lucky people must have tons of time on their hands to sit around waiting for a charge.
You can just jump into the car while it charges but there should be a roof covering, no doubt.

No, some USED to warranty manufacturing DEFECTS for 8 years. Capacity loss of Li-Ion is, and was, NEVER covered by ANY manufacturer, as it is a wear and tear item. They replace defective batteries ONLY with like-capacity USED batteries.
They do guaranty 70% capacity on your used replacement battery. A Li-Ion with 70% capacity is considered fully dead, as capacity loss is a steep exponential curve.
Don't you have a phone? All electric cars use an array of thousands of 3.7V phone batteries. No difference in longevity whatsoever. Same tech. Utterly identical. Capacity loss is time bound, use makes little difference to capacity before 200 charges. Google batteryuniversity for great info. They even test Tesla cells specifically, which are some of the shortest lived.

This is why Tesla was sued, and lost, by owners for their very brief battery lifespan. The judgement against Tesla ordered them to replace all car batteries once, at cost, for which Tesla charges $29,000. If you accept settlement Tesla cuts you off from their chargers and maintenance, forever.
The settlement is between you and Tesla, not the car and Tesla, so you, as a person, are banned from all Tesla support, forever.

I get what you’re trying to show here, only with a petrol or diesel you can refuel in two minutes, rather than twenty minutes. You have a full tank and can go anywhere. The EV’s maybe the future, only they take more time to recharge than refuel and you’re not constantly thinking will it make it to my destination.
generally, having a home charger gets rid of all those issues.
What Bobby is saying is 95(?) Percent of the time you never have to stop to "refuel" (charge).
Even those without charge at home will find they'll be able to charge while doing the weekly shop, probably with "loyalty charging" at their favourite store.
It's only going to become more convenient.
