I am sure there is the delicate balance called respectful informality. And also, there is the saying: familiarity breeds contempt (it shouldn't but it does). As a sensitive person, I have been surprised and hurt countless times by my siblings in terms of their utter lack of respectful attitude when it comes to dealing with family. I know for certain that they do not behave like that when they are with their friends.
As a Japanese-American, I know I don’t need to bow with white Americans. As a Japanese-American, I know I don’t need to hug my Japanese relatives in Japan. One culture is not better than the other just because they are different. It’s also not super difficult, all you have to be is a bit mindful. Something about the way she says it sounds so condescending.
I am mexican, my partner is german. Before meeting his family i asked him about their customs so i knew how it was appropriate for me to behave (turns out they are super relaxed 🙂). My point is, if you are getting into a new culture, and specially if you want to have a good relationship with them, it's just common sense to ask how things are done... 1. You cannot expect people to behave the same everywhere you go. That is just fully ignorant (or arrogant?) 2. It's about your partner, you want to have a good relationship with his family because you love this person, so you are the one to adapt. Its not about you! I dont get the complaint of formality by meghan. I'm half asian and we have formality in the family. I have to address my older siblings a certain way. I don't understand how people can't see how she constantly bullies Kate over the years. The stress Kate must have been under was likely not good for her health (my mum had a sister-in-law who bullied her over 10 years in these "subtle" ways and it nearly destroyed my mum 😢). I'm not saying it's literally Meghan's fault that Kate got cancer (Harry is at fault for bringing all this stress to the family). But this probably added another stress level to Kate's life. Megan does not understand traditional manners in the US stem from British. Eg she wore distressed holey jeans to the Invictus games with Harry when she first met him. In my parents family my brother wore short pants until he was six to church school and gatherings. We were brought up that way middle class Black. Families adhered to this standard. This was Meghan’s lack of understanding the British culture. It’s not just formal with royals. I married a British man and my mother in law would invite me over for dinner parties. Everyone also dressed very nicely, the table was set immaculately, three course meal of appetisers, mains and a dessert which was normally chocolate lava cakes. It’s lovely and I love these formal dinner parties. Can you imagine having a dinner party with the ROYALS and walking around barefoot in jeans?! I’m American and even I KNOW that is not what’s done. She makes us look ignorant.
That’s how I’m used to dinner parties being done as well. I know it’s individual between families, but we use it as a reason to get dressed nicely and make something that takes a bit more effort to eat. Even if it was an informal dinner I still would dress a bit more nice than I do when I’m just at home alone, just like I do when I go to work or even to the store. I live in Norway and not Britain.
Most of my family was born and raised in the UK and nobody eats at a table or dress unless it’s important like having family who they haven’t seen in a long time coming over. I totally agree with you that what she was wearing (and not wearing, with her bare feet) was intentional. IMO she wanted her clothes choice to say, “I’m so cool that I’m not star-struck about meeting you”. Also, when telling the story of her first meeting with W and K, most people would have simply recounted, “I was wearing jeans…” but M specifically says, “I was wearing ripped jeans”. It was a conscious decision to try to portray a certain look. I’m not suggesting for a moment that M should have worn a twin set and pearls, but smart/casual would have been more appropriate for dinner - with something on her feet!

Well I always thought that the royals would be acting to their family members the same way I would act to my family members. And I would not curtsy to my grandparents or parents or siblings- I would hug my siblings spouse when meeting or congratulating. But those things are cultural also. I am mexican, my partner is german. Before meeting his family i asked him about their customs so i knew how it was appropriate for me to behave (turns out they are super relaxed 🙂).
My point is, if you are getting into a new culture, and specially if you want to have a good relationship with them, it's just common sense to ask how things are done...
1. You cannot expect people to behave the same everywhere you go. That is just fully ignorant (or arrogant?)
2. It's about your partner, you want to have a good relationship with his family because you love this person, so you are the one to adapt. Its not about you!

I don't understand how people can't see how she constantly bullies Kate over the years. The stress Kate must have been under was likely not good for her health (my mum had a sister-in-law who bullied her over 10 years in these "subtle" ways and it nearly destroyed my mum 😢). This was Meghan’s lack of understanding the British culture. It’s not just formal with royals. I married a British man and my mother in law would invite me over for dinner parties. Everyone also dressed very nicely, the table was set immaculately, three course meal of appetisers, mains and a dessert which was normally chocolate lava cakes. It’s lovely and I love these formal dinner parties. Can you imagine having a dinner party with the ROYALS and walking around barefoot in jeans?! I’m American and even I KNOW that is not what’s done. I know it’s individual between families, but we use it as a reason to get dressed nicely and make something that takes a bit more effort to eat. Well I always thought that the royals would be acting to their family members the same way I would act to my family members. And I would not curtsy to my grandparents or parents or siblings- I would hug my siblings spouse when meeting or congratulating.
But those things are cultural also. Some countries you wont hug, but you give kisses on the cheek or something else.

What is the normal dress? I am not a huge Meghan fan or care for the royal family. For me, dressing normal is literally ripped jeans and if I'm in my own house I do prefer to barefoot. Keep in mind Meghan is British, she is American. So jeans is normal in American esp if they are in their own home.
However, if I was going to meet my in laws esp if they were royals. Wouldn't dress normal, quiet the opposite. Maybe some not formal wear like black dress

Meghan really thinks that every public figure is a fake. That’s what I’m taking out of this. So Meghan, how are we supposed to believe you’re genuine, caring, loving individual when that’s only you when the cameras are on you? @@tazm2820 Yeah but the OP is arguing that somehow the other royals are more genuine than MM because their public and private behaviours are similarly sanitised (except for Andrew, as far as we know). I say not, for the fact that millions of genuine people go to work everyday and adopt a slightly different persona to help them navigate their jobs. Doesn't mean they're less real than people who work alongside family and are finding it difficult to disentangle the public and private spheres.
Yeah, I just googled it. Apparently the Canadian govt was in 'discussions' about it 2 years ago, but it never came to fruition. Also, H&M didn't make this proposal to Trudeau. 'Security experts' (whatever that means) said that the Canadian government may have a legal obligation to bankroll security for H&M because of their royal status. So no, no need to upset yourself over it, it obviously didn't happen and H&M didn't ask.
