old video but for anyone new here, I have been trying to figure out this shit for almost a year now (much time was spent crying and contemplating selling my drones) But this video somehow saved my life. Follow this advice, future fpv pilots, and figure out how to match the ELRS versions on your quad and radio and you will be saved. I was so excited after binding this and getting good signal to the goggles and radio that I ran outside for a flight, and promptly hit some powerlines. But all is okay haha
Oh my goodness! It bloody worked first time! I can’t believe it. Built it, flashed it, bound them and armed them in about an hour or less. Virtually no fluff even on a Mac. The only issue I had was with getting my Mac to connect to the Wi-Fi. THANKS!!! Can’t test it yet though as late in even.
@@BaconNinjaFPV my Iflight defender 25 has a warning on betaflight that says the current settings may cause flyaway. Any ideas? And thanks again. I did test it and it’s a lot different from my tiny whoop but if certainly works.
Last week, trying to flash my Radiomaster Ranger, the flash kept failing.... I finally realized the USB C cable was for my Li-on charger - switched it out to a USB C that has the data wire also - flashed with no issues 😎 Awesome vid as always MBN Stay greasy 🤩

Good info mate. Don't forget the bind process. Most newer elrs receivers can enter the bind phrase be powering on and off the FC 3 times in quick succession. This will force the FC to enter bind mode. Don't bother typing bind_rx into the CLI of betaflight....this simply wont work. Also make sure that the ELRX RX firmware is the sameas the ELRS TX firmware. If not then they will also not bind.

I have found that there are absolutely some instances where you really can just hit the bind command and be off to the races, but that is pretty few and far between right now, lol. Since ELRS recently released the 3.X version, which is what is on your boxer since it is so new, and some quads are still shipping with 2.X versions there are lots of mismatches going on which keep that whole simple bind process for working out of the box. Hopefully after some time things start shipping with 3.X and we can get back to that....or they will just release 4.X and it starts all over again, lol. So glad you got it going!!!!
Yeah that one is a pretty common trip up! I am still on the fence about using it on my gear because sometimes it is faster to just connect to the ELRS wifi instead of waiting for it to show up in the configurator, lol.

I was on FrSky for just a little while before I got sick of the failsafes and dumped it for ELRS, lol. It only took two times face planting into concrete before I said enough was enough. I have been thinking about updating my ETX, but just haven't ever gotten around to it. May have to do that soon!

Gday Bacon, I really enjoy your tutorials, I am having troubles myself, I noticed in you lua scripts you had v2. And v3. Elrs, can you have both scripts configured at the same time so you can bind to sdi elrs on the whoops and then be bound with your other quads that have a stand alone reciver, I have spent hours and days reading, youtubing, I get a little funny in the head and everyone has different takes on this. I do feel like I am learning, I am definitely not flying which frustrates me, anyways, I appreciate your efforts... cheers 🙏
@ 27:29 building the RX firmware BIN. So the one with the long name is what we will flash to the RX but what is the other "firmware.bin" file created? Isn't it the same thing? I was always confused about that.
you know, im not sure what that other firmware.bin is for really. I have always just assumed it was some resource left over from the compiling process. I imagine it is the base firmware that gets used to generate the board specific firmware with the longer name.
I'm a total newb trying to set up a tx12. I was told I dint need to flash it. I'm working with fixed wing no quad. It's all very confusing. I'm just trying to get the menus straight for when I get the rx to bind it properly.
As long as the receiver and transmitter are running the same base version of ELRS (2.X or 3.X) then you "technically" dont have to flash everything. You would just plug/unplug the power to the receiver 3 times quickly which puts it into bind mode, then hit the bind button in the ELRS LUA script to get it going. Personally though, I would still flash it just to make sure everything is on the exact same minor version too.
You should for sure update your LUA whenever you build a new flash for your radio :) Partly because that is the easiest time to do it with the little button that comes up in the flashing screen, but also just to make sure it can talk to your transmitter in a way that the transmitter expects after being flashed.
when i get to the firmwear part after setting binding phrase and the wifi password and stuff there's no option to build for me only force flash and erase before flash. what am I doing wrong? I have a MacBook air.
That part is going to be in the settings of your model. Getting to that is a bit different for different radios, but once you pull it up you will want to edit the model you are trying to configure and that internal/external option will be in there :)
That is a tough one! If you flashed a target that wasn't made for your board and can no longer access it to re-flash, the only way that I know of is with the HappyModel ELRS recovery tool. It is basically a serial adapter that you solder up to the receiver and flash it at a lower level that doesn't require successfully booting the receiver first. If I remember correctly, they are pretty cheap to pick up and always a good tool to have laying around.
When I build the firmware for the Radio master RP1 2.5 RX... I only see a bin file called FIRMWARE. When I try to flash it get an error "Update Failed...Error(4) Not enough space". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
When I connect to my RX wifi, as soon as I connect, it slow blinks on the rx and seems to disconnect. (The ELRS page will popup if i'm fast enough, but It doesn't keep its connection) Do you know what this can mean?
hmmmm, usually that either means the RX doesn't have enough power to run in wifi mode very long, it is getting hot, or there is something up with the firmware on it. Are you using a pack plugged in or powering over the USB to do your flashing? If so, you might try using the betaflight passthrough flashing method in the ELRS configurator instead. To do that you will need to check the BF passthrough bubble and make sure your quad is connected to the PC with BetaFlight not running at all. Then when you hit build and flash it should take care of everything for you. The passthrough method doesn't always work, but in this case it is well worth the shot.
Someone help!!! Im on a Mac, every time I build the firmware updates, it only shows the firmware.bin file and not named like Bacon Ninja's.. even the receiver update downloads as "firmware.bin.gz" How I can I download the proper files??

I will absolutely show the backpack soon :) Going to pair that one with making it work on the HDZ goggles if I don't have to send them back before I can get to it. Yeah Happymodel does have that unofficial branch of Betaflight that supports ELRS 3.0, so that makes it a bit easier with that board!
Hey man. Can you hel me? I have a RadioKing radio TX18s (opentx). My internal rf mode is set on Multi FrSky D16. What do i need to do to get ELRS? Reason being. I was to purchase a Cineape35 BNF which i also believe have the ELRS receiver. What do I do?

Please please please use the chapter feature, many want to surf thru the video (specially when they are very long) but its pretty hard without chapters being set
So he worked too hard and made it too in depth so you want him to work even harder and separate it into easier to skip sections? This video basically is just the first chapter..flashing.
I absolutely plan on putting them in there. I have been having an issue with the chapters just not working at all when I put them in before scheduling the video. They only seem to work if I have let the video release then go back and do them after a few hours...not sure why that is, lol

its really not too bad once you get through the first flash, but it is for sure not as easy as some of the competing systems when it comes to number of steps. Hopefully whatever comes on it will be compatible with what is on the receiver and it just works for you :)
Anyone have any idea why my PC wont connect to my transmitter over WiFi? It sees it, but when I enter the password my pc says, Cant connect to this device. I dont see anyone else having this problem anywhere
there are a few things that could be going on with it. If your receiver has a solid light on it, then you for sure have a good bind. No sticks after a good bind could be having the TX/RX in the wrong places on the UART the receiver is connected to, not having the SerialRX option set to the correct UART in the ports tab of BetaFlight, not having the correct settings selected for the receiver type in the receiver tab, or not having the model set up on the radio to pass the sticks and switches over with the mixes section. I know it is a whole lot of options to check on, but I would run that list down in order and hopefully you find the one causing it!
well, maybe if you flash another 20 of them you won't hate it anymore! :p It isn't the easiest thing, that is for sure. I will say though, I like it much better than flashing FrSky receivers with an old school PWM cable and a weird little port on my radio, lol.
I ran into the same problem and bought a laptop just for elrs...sorta lol. Maybe have someone email you the fw .bin file you need. What hardware are you using and what target version are you wanting? I could email you the file.
The speedybee app is absolutely my pick if you don't have a PC to use. It is great that they added a cloud build system for ELRS firmware in there! At some point...when I can get my stinking phone to record on my PC...I will do a video on how to use that one for people who are in the same boat :)
I don’t have Wi-Fi on my PC, and if I don’t feel like plugging my quad to the computer I just build the bins on the computer transfer to my phone and Wi-Fi flash from my phone. I always keep all the bins I need on my phone, just in case. Speedybee doesn’t have the newest stuff all the time, I just use it for setup, and sometimes flashing. More than one way of doing it that’s for sure.
I really hope someone takes you up on this!! In the mean time, if you happen to have Discord we do have a whole bunch of really knowledgeable and helpful pilots over in the troubleshooting section of the server that might get you pointed in the right direction. It will likely be a little slower than 1 on 1 troubleshooting, but having quite a few more sets of eyes on it can usually get an issue sorted out :)
Nobody I know has ever got ELRS to work. I tell them just use Crossfire So much of the ELRS hardware is rubbish. Tehre is no quality control. Cheap is right. Because it don't work. A lot of piltos don't even have computers, and use SpeedyBee. You wont' be doing any flashing with your mobile phon.
The good news is that the speedybee app does actually have a full ELRS flashing suite where you can flash up receivers and the transmitters :) I know a hand full of people who just couldn't get ELRS working out of the few hundred that I have seen or helped get it going, so it for sure isn't a 100% success rate.
Sorry it isn't going well for you :( What kind of radio and receiver are you running, and what are the lights on the receiver doing when you are having issues?
Is it absolutely necessary to use 40+ minutes to talk about something that is not so complex? You just make a simple thing rather complex and time-consuming.
For some pilots it isn't as simple a thing, and explaining it in more detail helps them out :) either way I do it, some people would have preferred it one way while other prefer a different way. I tend to err on the side of more info so people are left with fewer questions.

Please think about sitting in a class for 50 minutes and looking at your professor talking and talking without much meat. I am sure you and I would get to sleep very soon. There are presentations, there are good presentations there are effective presentations, and there are great presentations. Which one would you want?

@@newtmcfly3637 oh I totally knew what you meant! :) There is a trade off between too much info and super long vids, or just getting the point across and stopping at that which I have to balance all the time, lol. I have found that in most cases, people would rather have too much info and understand why they are doing whatever it is I am showing them rather than just walking through the steps. I have tried it both ways and on one hand I have a ton of people left with more questions while on the other the videos are just super long. Its always a struggle. I will say though, for the shorter things I am doing articles on my website for quicker run throughs which should help a little bit :)

Thats about how long it takes me to flash a new ELRS receiver too. Right from my phone, connect to wifi, drop the file, and done with no binding. Ghost is a good link too though!
My man, trying to show ELRS is easy with a 40min video guide isn't very convincing. I'm only joking though. I started with ELRS, for me its all those *other systems* that are weird and confusing. I hear with those you gotta press bind buttons here and there and everywhere, instead of just flashing your bind phrase 😱
lolol, you have a point! If you add up the actual flashing bits, it is much faster though :p I just over explained like I usually do because the bacon grease makes me ramble! I went to ELRS pretty quick too after spending some time with FrSky which drove me insane...and that binding phrase makes life soooo much easier.
I just want to make you aware when I first started looking into fpv the main accounts kept popping up and filling my recommended. Now that I’m actually building, I am referring to all of your videos without any questions after watching them. I appreciate the great detail and thoroughness. I feel like I have an understanding wether it’s updating firmware to setting up my HDZero. Next I’m going to be looking up how to update and setup the HD Zero goggles. I sadly ran into an issue where my freestyle VTX video cable wouldn’t reach to my runcam only a half inch short… so now I’m waiting on the 250mm cable which is more than double the length. I was recommended the speedy bee Master 5 but wasn’t aware of the length. I’m still happy I haven’t had any hiccups besides that

I have the betafpv 2.4, oled 1W module incoming... ya'll know if it's just as greasey as the happymodel? Obviously it's plastic and totally undercooked vs Ranger's cast iron skillet casing, should I be expecting the same general internals, procedures and overall the same hickory smoked performance as the radiomaster hog modji? Please advise my agile swine warrior!
@@infoaerialmaster so far my plastic cased HappyModel TX ELRS unit has had no problem, it comes with a cooling fan if you get the Pro model. Does the BetaFPV TX come with a fan? If so you should be good to go. I use some of the BetaFPV ELRS receivers, seam just as good as the HappyModel ones. You could always wrap you TX module in bacon to making preform better 🥓.

it is very complicated im on day 3 trying to get my boxer radio with elrs built in to bind to my iflight defender 25 and its been hell this video has been better i really hope it works after this i was told as long as i have the elrs module inside or out it will bind right away to the defender 25 just by going to bind on the radio while the defender 25 is in bind mode i didnt know i had to go through all this im new to the hobby i love it so much this is my first set up so you can see how frustrating it is i want to give up sell this stuff but im not a quiter so thank you for this video i hope this works
I have been wanting to do that myself!!! I believe Matek makes some ELRS receivers that have native PWM outputs to send signal to your servos and speed controllers on a ground vehicle. I would look into those!
This one is a little over detailed so pilots won't come out of it with too many questions and have the process down after their first time. I could have made it much much shorter, but I opted to just give as much info as possible so if anything went wrong it wouldn't leave anyone lost :)

Bacon, thanks for the video..very clear.. I was good up to time 30:59 where you connect your laptop to the Txmtr's Wifi access point.. My Win11Pro desnt have wifi .. it's hardwired via Eth to the Gateway Router ( which does). I can however see the "ExpressLRS Tx" on my iphone so I will try to get the files over to it and try again later..
That is exactly the way I would go with it! Upload that firmware to your phone via iCloud and it should be pretty easy to connect up to it with that for the flashing bit :)

lol, my circus gets a little crazy sometimes. I agree, this one was suuuuuper long. I tend to shoot for answering as many of the questions most people have in the video rather than them having to ask elsewhere and boy do I get a ton of these questions in the discord. Great video. I just got a Radiomaster Nano to put on my Zorro 4n1. After I get the luascript and everything flashed I should be able to connect it to my phone or pc via bluetooh for simulation usage correct? thanks
you sure should! The RM nano should have the bluetooth capability and you should be able to pair it from within the LUA after you get everything set up. Now some devices don't like the bluetooth controller emulation, but it is pretty rare that it doesn't at least register the inputs correctly. Switches may be a little rough, but sticks should be golden!
I appreciate the info in this video and your time doing it. I had purchased a RM Ranger and 4 receivers this past winter but because of a nightmare last fall trying to get a Betafpv tx an rx up and running I kept putting it off.This spring i had watched 4-5 videos (including yours) but hadn't worked up the courage to dive in again. But today i took the plunge. It took about 6 hours to finally get it all running!!!??? Unbeknownst to me my laptop (wireless) was not recognizing the wifi signals from the ELRS equipment and all along I thought I was doing something wrong (same as last fall). What was crazy was the laptop was/is being used daily for wireless to access the internet so I logically thought it was ok. Long story short I was able to get to another computer and discovered it was the laptop causing all the problems. After I figured that out, I had the Ranger, and 2 rx's up and running in about 20 minutes. thanks again.
If you are talking about the TX module, that info is in the LUA script. I don't remember where exactly off the top of my head, but I feel like it is right on the page at the top or bottom somewhere. As for the receiver, I believe you can get that in the LUA under a menu item as well, but otherwise you can just connect to it via wifi and get that info from the page where you would normally go to load new firmware.
Hey I have a problem with my Wi-Fi on my radio master boxer I can click enable Wi-Fi and it show Wi-Fi running but my pc, laptop and my phone aren’t picking up a signal I have the internal rf set to mode crsf 1.87 and status is 250hz 0Err. And then in SYS the hardware page the internal rf is Type CRSF and Baudrate 1.87M. When I first got the remote the Wi-Fi worked before but I was having troubles connecting to my cinebot 30 so I found your video and once you turned on Wi-Fi I tried with mine and it’s just not showing up on anything. Any help would be much appreciated.
Is this the first flash on your boxer, or had you already flashed it previously? If this isn't the first flash, did you happen to set the home wifi settings in it? If so, it won't broadcast wifi anymore since it will just connect to your home wifi. The only way to find that when using that setup is to start wifi, then close ELRS configurator, re-open the configurator, and wait for it to show up in the available devices section at the bottom. If it is your first time flashing that boxer, then it is for sure a more complicated issue.
@@BaconNinjaFPV well I followed your video and took the ss card already out and did that lua script thing so I will have to try what you said when I get home because it must be just going to my home Wi-Fi because I put in the ssid and password when I created that script it makes since now
24:24 How can I check exactly the one I have? I can see that my RX is Flywoo branded, but when I connect to it via WiFi, it says ""Generic ESP8285 2.4Ghz RX" ... I'm just not sure which version to flash.
hmmmm, did you get it with a bind and fly or was it something you installed at one point? If that is what your firmware says on the web page, you should be able to just build for the same target in the configurator and I think they have some generic (or DIY options) in there for those instances. I haven't run across a generic in the wild though, but it is possible that some vendor somewhere built a board based on the reference design and just used the generic target to get it going.
It does for sure depend on a persons level of confidence with these kinds of things right out of the gate :) Some people may absolutely need to dig in a little more than this does and take a bit more time with it, and that is totally normal. One of the wonderful things about FPV is everyone comes in with different levels of previous experience with different kinds of hobbies and the journey is unique every time!
Hmmmm, hopefully it is something simple! What kind of light pattern are you getting on the ELRS receiver light? It should be green and near the edge of the board. The one toward the middle is the status light, so it will kind of do its own thing.
@Bacon Ninja FPV hi bacon, I figured it out. My phone never did find the signal, but I had to hold the drone 6 inches from my PCs wifi card lol. Any further and the signal would drop! Now I'm having an issue where when I plug my drone into betaflight nothing happens. No lights or com recognition. I even tried impulse rc and driver updates. Not sure if I had flashed it wrong....
Hey man quick question..I have the literadio3 elrs and have bound my mobula7 1s with the spi elrs and my rekon 4fr with an external elrs rx and they bound in 2 seconds but I can't get my cineape 25 with external elrs rx to bind🤔 could it be because the newest version of elrs is on the rx ? Because the version on my radio is 2.0...any help would be great thanks
sorry it took me so long to see this...YT's comments have been really janky for me lately :( I would be willing to bet that your cineape25 has a v3 version of ELRS and that isn't going to bind up with a v2 version on your lite radio...unfortunately. I haven't dont an ELRS upgrade on that radio yet, although I do have one I am doing some testing with that I should get to do it on soon. Hopefully it isn't too much of a pain to get updated!
@Bacon Ninja FPV thanks for replying man I appreciate it👍🏼 yeah I had to flash my receiver down to 2.5.2 and it works however what sucks is betafpv isn't releasing a 3.0 update of elrs for the literadio3 elrs version....I bought it because it was cheap and then a month later they came out with the literadio3 pro....smh....I'm just going to get a radiomaster boxer 4in1 and get a elrs module and be set forever lol because I fly rc planes as well so I want a radio that I can use for both✌🏼
I got problems to bind my brand new Nazgul5 v2 F7 to my LiteRadio 3. I've heard I must flash both receiver and RC to make them compatible, but I'm not being able to understand to which version I should flash them neither to understand how to flash it.
So with the Lite Radio 3 Pro you will probably want to pull the user manual from BetaFPV and that flashing process will most likely be over USB. As for the quad though, you can totally do that one over WiFi. I would go with version 3.2 since it is the newest, and there are targets in the ELRS configurator for both the radio and the quad's receiver in there. For your quad, there are only 2 options listed under the iFlight 2.4g selecting in the configurator, and you will want the RX :)
@@BaconNinjaFPV yeah man, I had to flash my LiteRadio to last version, and the RX to the 2.5.2 that is the last version compatible with that RC, it sucks. Finally binded it, but screwed it up and erased every single drone setting. Could get the dump file, but motors make a weird noise now

new sub here. I keep getting the comm11 port doesn't exist error when I try to build and flash my radiomaster zorro in configurator please help someone
Hey, thanks for the sub! To use the method I am showing in the video, you are going to want to use the build button rather than build and flash. Using build and flash expects that your radio is connected over USB and has everything set up to flash via that method which is why you are getting a com error...which kind of rarely works if I am being honest, lol. I chose the wifi method for this one since it has a very high success rate compared to the bind and flash options.
@@BaconNinjaFPV I think I finally got that to work last night but now none of my drones will bind to the tx do I have to update all of my receivers now. I've always just used the 3 plug method to bind them before and now wish I would have just left them alone lol
I did a little video on troubleshooting ELRS that may help you out. It is a few weeks back on the channel, but it takes a look at the blink codes on your receiver to help point in the right direction as to what may be going on :)
Wow this is the best rc product so easy to use and grea investment of $600 i ever spent . Thanks . No . Not really . One orxvtx worked out of 9 rx and 3 tx . Nano 2.4 , nano 900 , micro 900mhz and multiple recievers . Then the anettan got prop caught and ripped up the rx . Niw its just $575 of make believe .
I hope you see this!! I am following the video and got to the point of selecting expresslrs from the list of tools and when i do i get a blank screen that just says loading at the top.
Ah, that one does happen! Usually it means you don't have the correct module selected in the model settings for the current model your radio is set to. You will want to go into the model settings and make sure you have it set to either use internal or external RF, whichever one your ELRS transmitter is in. Once you have that set up, it should load properly :) if that still doesn't work, there are some more advanced baud rate settings to double check as well.
Hi thanks so much for the complete video, I have some new receivers Bayck ELRS 2.4G they do connect somehow they act funny and keep disconnecting, I took my micro sd card out and then I went to the tools there’s so much junk in there, probably that’s what’s causing conflicts, could you tell me what should be in the tools folder, I know every radio is deferent buy more or less thanks so much 😊
hmmmm, the extra stuff on the SD card shouldn't be causing you any trouble with the receivers disconnecting. Are they disconnecting when you are on USB power or with a pack plugged in? Sometimes they act funny if they aren't quite getting the full 5v they need, or sometimes even when the amp draw they have available isnt sufficient.
@@BaconNinjaFPV power should be fine, I’m powering with a ESC, I think is something in the radio because all 3 receivers same problem they all loos telemetry in like 15 seconds then connects again, they all have new version 3.2.1 receiver and express LRS module, i have a video if I could send it some where thanks for the response
The best way to tell will be to take a look at the receiver tab of betaflight. In there you will either see Serial UART or SPI selected in the first drop down on the right side. Other than that, you sometimes have to dig through the manufacturer specs for the board since SPI receivers are integrated on them. It can be tricky though since UART receivers are getting the same integration more and more...the Betaflight way wont lie thought :)
Great VIDEO. i do have a question, in the GEPRC site says that for my drone which is the "GEPRC Tern-LR40 HD O3 Long Range FPV" the receiver for 2.4 elrs is "GEPRC ELRS24" so when in ELRS configurator and i want to flash the receiver (not the controller) the options are "GEPRC Nano 2.4GHz PA100 RX", "GEPRC Nano(SE) 2.4GHz RX" and "GEPRC Dual Diversity 2.4GHz RX" do you have any idea which one is it?
You sure can! As long as it is tuned for 2.4ghz and has a UFL connector it will work just fine. Lots of people run the same antennas used by ghost and tracer on ELRS receivers :)

Hello I just updated my radiomaster TX16s to Edge TX 2.9.4 Providence, from there I set the internal module type to CRSF, when doing so I checked to make sure I had the latest LUA script of the Express LRS, I even rebuilt it and save to the SD card in the specified folder, upon trying to execute Express LRS, I get stuck on the loading screen with no progress to be made. Any help would be appreciated.
I flash my TX using UART, and I run SPI-based receivers. It's an extra bit of fiddley-work with the Happymodel ES24TX Pro module. Gotta take the top plate off to access the USB port, and configure some DIP switches before flashing. I'm a bit of a stickler at running the latest firmware, so I run BF 4.4.2 and ELRS 3.3. I doubt I'll go further with the firmware, as the FCs are 411s which don't have the capacity to take BF4.5 without some phukkery.
old video but for anyone new here, I have been trying to figure out this shit for almost a year now (much time was spent crying and contemplating selling my drones) But this video somehow saved my life. Follow this advice, future fpv pilots, and figure out how to match the ELRS versions on your quad and radio and you will be saved. I was so excited after binding this and getting good signal to the goggles and radio that I ran outside for a flight, and promptly hit some powerlines. But all is okay haha
Oh my goodness! It bloody worked first time! I can’t believe it. Built it, flashed it, bound them and armed them in about an hour or less. Virtually no fluff even on a Mac. The only issue I had was with getting my Mac to connect to the Wi-Fi. THANKS!!! Can’t test it yet though as late in even.

Last week, trying to flash my Radiomaster Ranger, the flash kept failing.... I finally realized the USB C cable was for my Li-on charger - switched it out to a USB C that has the data wire also - flashed with no issues 😎

Good info mate. Don't forget the bind process. Most newer elrs receivers can enter the bind phrase be powering on and off the FC 3 times in quick succession. This will force the FC to enter bind mode. Don't bother typing bind_rx into the CLI of betaflight....this simply wont work. Also make sure that the ELRX RX firmware is the sameas the ELRS TX firmware. If not then they will also not bind.

I have found that there are absolutely some instances where you really can just hit the bind command and be off to the races, but that is pretty few and far between right now, lol. Since ELRS recently released the 3.X version, which is what is on your boxer since it is so new, and some quads are still shipping with 2.X versions there are lots of mismatches going on which keep that whole simple bind process for working out of the box. Hopefully after some time things start shipping with 3.X and we can get back to that....or they will just release 4.X and it starts all over again, lol. So glad you got it going!!!!

Yeah that one is a pretty common trip up! I am still on the fence about using it on my gear because sometimes it is faster to just connect to the ELRS wifi instead of waiting for it to show up in the configurator, lol.

I was on FrSky for just a little while before I got sick of the failsafes and dumped it for ELRS, lol. It only took two times face planting into concrete before I said enough was enough. I have been thinking about updating my ETX, but just haven't ever gotten around to it. May have to do that soon!

Gday Bacon, I really enjoy your tutorials, I am having troubles myself, I noticed in you lua scripts you had v2. And v3. Elrs, can you have both scripts configured at the same time so you can bind to sdi elrs on the whoops and then be bound with your other quads that have a stand alone reciver, I have spent hours and days reading, youtubing, I get a little funny in the head and everyone has different takes on this. I do feel like I am learning, I am definitely not flying which frustrates me, anyways, I appreciate your efforts... cheers 🙏

@ 27:29 building the RX firmware BIN. So the one with the long name is what we will flash to the RX but what is the other "firmware.bin" file created? Isn't it the same thing? I was always confused about that.
you know, im not sure what that other firmware.bin is for really. I have always just assumed it was some resource left over from the compiling process. I imagine it is the base firmware that gets used to generate the board specific firmware with the longer name.
Do you have to have a control board or is there ELRS receivers to just use Chanel’s or the radio to control the model?
There are ELRS receivers with PWM outputs so that you don't have to always use an FC. Matek and a few other manufacturers sell them :)
I'm a total newb trying to set up a tx12. I was told I dint need to flash it. I'm working with fixed wing no quad. It's all very confusing. I'm just trying to get the menus straight for when I get the rx to bind it properly.
As long as the receiver and transmitter are running the same base version of ELRS (2.X or 3.X) then you "technically" dont have to flash everything. You would just plug/unplug the power to the receiver 3 times quickly which puts it into bind mode, then hit the bind button in the ELRS LUA script to get it going. Personally though, I would still flash it just to make sure everything is on the exact same minor version too.

You should for sure update your LUA whenever you build a new flash for your radio :) Partly because that is the easiest time to do it with the little button that comes up in the flashing screen, but also just to make sure it can talk to your transmitter in a way that the transmitter expects after being flashed.
when i get to the firmwear part after setting binding phrase and the wifi password and stuff there's no option to build for me only force flash and erase before flash. what am I doing wrong? I have a MacBook air.
How did you get to the internal and external RF?
That part is going to be in the settings of your model. Getting to that is a bit different for different radios, but once you pull it up you will want to edit the model you are trying to configure and that internal/external option will be in there :)

I flashed wrong target on foxeer rx. RX will not light up now. Can you help?
That is a tough one! If you flashed a target that wasn't made for your board and can no longer access it to re-flash, the only way that I know of is with the HappyModel ELRS recovery tool. It is basically a serial adapter that you solder up to the receiver and flash it at a lower level that doesn't require successfully booting the receiver first. If I remember correctly, they are pretty cheap to pick up and always a good tool to have laying around.
When I build the firmware for the Radio master RP1 2.5 RX... I only see a bin file called FIRMWARE. When I try to flash it get an error "Update Failed...Error(4) Not enough space". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
When I connect to my RX wifi, as soon as I connect, it slow blinks on the rx and seems to disconnect. (The ELRS page will popup if i'm fast enough, but It doesn't keep its connection) Do you know what this can mean?
hmmmm, usually that either means the RX doesn't have enough power to run in wifi mode very long, it is getting hot, or there is something up with the firmware on it. Are you using a pack plugged in or powering over the USB to do your flashing? If so, you might try using the betaflight passthrough flashing method in the ELRS configurator instead. To do that you will need to check the BF passthrough bubble and make sure your quad is connected to the PC with BetaFlight not running at all. Then when you hit build and flash it should take care of everything for you. The passthrough method doesn't always work, but in this case it is well worth the shot.

I will absolutely show the backpack soon :) Going to pair that one with making it work on the HDZ goggles if I don't have to send them back before I can get to it. Yeah Happymodel does have that unofficial branch of Betaflight that supports ELRS 3.0, so that makes it a bit easier with that board!

Please please please use the chapter feature, many want to surf thru the video (specially when they are very long) but its pretty hard without chapters being set

I absolutely plan on putting them in there. I have been having an issue with the chapters just not working at all when I put them in before scheduling the video. They only seem to work if I have let the video release then go back and do them after a few hours...not sure why that is, lol

its really not too bad once you get through the first flash, but it is for sure not as easy as some of the competing systems when it comes to number of steps. Hopefully whatever comes on it will be compatible with what is on the receiver and it just works for you :)
Anyone have any idea why my PC wont connect to my transmitter over WiFi? It sees it, but when I enter the password my pc says, Cant connect to this device. I dont see anyone else having this problem anywhere

What could be wrong if my ELRS Rec binds i get a green light and the radio is receiving a single, but nothing from the sticks?
there are a few things that could be going on with it. If your receiver has a solid light on it, then you for sure have a good bind. No sticks after a good bind could be having the TX/RX in the wrong places on the UART the receiver is connected to, not having the SerialRX option set to the correct UART in the ports tab of BetaFlight, not having the correct settings selected for the receiver type in the receiver tab, or not having the model set up on the radio to pass the sticks and switches over with the mixes section. I know it is a whole lot of options to check on, but I would run that list down in order and hopefully you find the one causing it!

I just flashed my fifth ELRS receiver yesterday and I still hate it. It’s easier every time but it’s still intimidating for some reason😂
well, maybe if you flash another 20 of them you won't hate it anymore! :p It isn't the easiest thing, that is for sure. I will say though, I like it much better than flashing FrSky receivers with an old school PWM cable and a weird little port on my radio, lol.

I ran into the same problem and bought a laptop just for elrs...sorta lol. Maybe have someone email you the fw .bin file you need. What hardware are you using and what target version are you wanting? I could email you the file.
The speedybee app is absolutely my pick if you don't have a PC to use. It is great that they added a cloud build system for ELRS firmware in there! At some point...when I can get my stinking phone to record on my PC...I will do a video on how to use that one for people who are in the same boat :)

I don’t have Wi-Fi on my PC, and if I don’t feel like plugging my quad to the computer I just build the bins on the computer transfer to my phone and Wi-Fi flash from my phone.
I always keep all the bins I need on my phone, just in case.
Speedybee doesn’t have the newest stuff all the time, I just use it for setup, and sometimes flashing.
More than one way of doing it that’s for sure.

I really hope someone takes you up on this!! In the mean time, if you happen to have Discord we do have a whole bunch of really knowledgeable and helpful pilots over in the troubleshooting section of the server that might get you pointed in the right direction. It will likely be a little slower than 1 on 1 troubleshooting, but having quite a few more sets of eyes on it can usually get an issue sorted out :)

So much of the ELRS hardware is rubbish.
Tehre is no quality control. Cheap is right. Because it don't work. A lot of piltos don't even have computers, and use SpeedyBee. You wont' be doing any flashing with your mobile phon.
The good news is that the speedybee app does actually have a full ELRS flashing suite where you can flash up receivers and the transmitters :) I know a hand full of people who just couldn't get ELRS working out of the few hundred that I have seen or helped get it going, so it for sure isn't a 100% success rate.

Is it absolutely necessary to use 40+ minutes to talk about something that is not so complex? You just make a simple thing rather complex and time-consuming.
For some pilots it isn't as simple a thing, and explaining it in more detail helps them out :) either way I do it, some people would have preferred it one way while other prefer a different way. I tend to err on the side of more info so people are left with fewer questions.

Please think about sitting in a class for 50 minutes and looking at your professor talking and talking without much meat. I am sure you and I would get to sleep very soon. There are presentations, there are good presentations there are effective presentations, and there are great presentations. Which one would you want?

I have found that in most cases, people would rather have too much info and understand why they are doing whatever it is I am showing them rather than just walking through the steps. I have tried it both ways and on one hand I have a ton of people left with more questions while on the other the videos are just super long. Its always a struggle. I will say though, for the shorter things I am doing articles on my website for quicker run throughs which should help a little bit :)

I'm only joking though. I started with ELRS, for me its all those *other systems* that are weird and confusing. I hear with those you gotta press bind buttons here and there and everywhere, instead of just flashing your bind phrase 😱
lolol, you have a point! If you add up the actual flashing bits, it is much faster though :p I just over explained like I usually do because the bacon grease makes me ramble! I went to ELRS pretty quick too after spending some time with FrSky which drove me insane...and that binding phrase makes life soooo much easier.
I just want to make you aware when I first started looking into fpv the main accounts kept popping up and filling my recommended. Now that I’m actually building, I am referring to all of your videos without any questions after watching them. I appreciate the great detail and thoroughness. I feel like I have an understanding wether it’s updating firmware to setting up my HDZero. Next I’m going to be looking up how to update and setup the HD Zero goggles. I sadly ran into an issue where my freestyle VTX video cable wouldn’t reach to my runcam only a half inch short… so now I’m waiting on the 250mm cable which is more than double the length. I was recommended the speedy bee Master 5 but wasn’t aware of the length. I’m still happy I haven’t had any hiccups besides that

I have the betafpv 2.4, oled 1W module incoming... ya'll know if it's just as greasey as the happymodel? Obviously it's plastic and totally undercooked vs Ranger's cast iron skillet casing, should I be expecting the same general internals, procedures and overall the same hickory smoked performance as the radiomaster hog modji? Please advise my agile swine warrior!
@@infoaerialmaster so far my plastic cased HappyModel TX ELRS unit has had no problem, it comes with a cooling fan if you get the Pro model.
Does the BetaFPV TX come with a fan? If so you should be good to go. I use some of the BetaFPV ELRS receivers, seam just as good as the HappyModel ones. You could always wrap you TX module in bacon to making preform better 🥓.
Hello there, I want to thank you for all the information you've provided in this video, I was stuck with a problem after updating the firmware on a TX16s and was able to fix it after watching this video.
it is very complicated im on day 3 trying to get my boxer radio with elrs built in to bind to my iflight defender 25 and its been hell this video has been better i really hope it works after this i was told as long as i have the elrs module inside or out it will bind right away to the defender 25 just by going to bind on the radio while the defender 25 is in bind mode i didnt know i had to go through all this im new to the hobby i love it so much this is my first set up so you can see how frustrating it is i want to give up sell this stuff but im not a quiter so thank you for this video i hope this works

I have been wanting to do that myself!!! I believe Matek makes some ELRS receivers that have native PWM outputs to send signal to your servos and speed controllers on a ground vehicle. I would look into those!

Bacon, thanks for the video..very clear.. I was good up to time 30:59 where you connect your laptop to the Txmtr's Wifi access point.. My Win11Pro desnt have wifi .. it's hardwired via Eth to the Gateway Router ( which does). I can however see the "ExpressLRS Tx" on my iphone so I will try to get the files over to it and try again later..
That is exactly the way I would go with it! Upload that firmware to your phone via iCloud and it should be pretty easy to connect up to it with that for the flashing bit :)

lol, my circus gets a little crazy sometimes. I agree, this one was suuuuuper long. Great video. I just got a Radiomaster Nano to put on my Zorro 4n1. After I get the luascript and everything flashed I should be able to connect it to my phone or pc via bluetooh for simulation usage correct?

you sure should! The RM nano should have the bluetooth capability and you should be able to pair it from within the LUA after you get everything set up. Now some devices don't like the bluetooth controller emulation, but it is pretty rare that it doesn't at least register the inputs correctly. Switches may be a little rough, but sticks should be golden!
I appreciate the info in this video and your time doing it. I had purchased a RM Ranger and 4 receivers this past winter but because of a nightmare last fall trying to get a Betafpv tx an rx up and running I kept putting it off.This spring i had watched 4-5 videos (including yours) but hadn't worked up the courage to dive in again. But today i took the plunge. It took about 6 hours to finally get it all running!!!??? Unbeknownst to me my laptop (wireless) was not recognizing the wifi signals from the ELRS equipment and all along I thought I was doing something wrong (same as last fall). What was crazy was the laptop was/is being used daily for wireless to access the internet so I logically thought it was ok. Long story short I was able to get to another computer and discovered it was the laptop causing all the problems. After I figured that out, I had the Ranger, and 2 rx's up and running in about 20 minutes. thanks again.
Currently any way of checking what fw I last flashed on my module? I know I left it on 2.something but how can I check?
If you are talking about the TX module, that info is in the LUA script. I don't remember where exactly off the top of my head, but I feel like it is right on the page at the top or bottom somewhere. As for the receiver, I believe you can get that in the LUA under a menu item as well, but otherwise you can just connect to it via wifi and get that info from the page where you would normally go to load new firmware.
Hey I have a problem with my Wi-Fi on my radio master boxer I can click enable Wi-Fi and it show Wi-Fi running but my pc, laptop and my phone aren’t picking up a signal I have the internal rf set to mode crsf 1.87 and status is 250hz 0Err. And then in SYS the hardware page the internal rf is Type CRSF and Baudrate 1.87M. When I first got the remote the Wi-Fi worked before but I was having troubles connecting to my cinebot 30 so I found your video and once you turned on Wi-Fi I tried with mine and it’s just not showing up on anything. Any help would be much appreciated.
Is this the first flash on your boxer, or had you already flashed it previously? If this isn't the first flash, did you happen to set the home wifi settings in it? If so, it won't broadcast wifi anymore since it will just connect to your home wifi. The only way to find that when using that setup is to start wifi, then close ELRS configurator, re-open the configurator, and wait for it to show up in the available devices section at the bottom. If it is your first time flashing that boxer, then it is for sure a more complicated issue.

24:24 How can I check exactly the one I have? I can see that my RX is Flywoo branded, but when I connect to it via WiFi, it says ""Generic ESP8285 2.4Ghz RX" ... I'm just not sure which version to flash.
hmmmm, did you get it with a bind and fly or was it something you installed at one point? If that is what your firmware says on the web page, you should be able to just build for the same target in the configurator and I think they have some generic (or DIY options) in there for those instances. I haven't run across a generic in the wild though, but it is possible that some vendor somewhere built a board based on the reference design and just used the generic target to get it going.

You are clearly talking way over begginers level. So this is more for those who have some experience.
It does for sure depend on a persons level of confidence with these kinds of things right out of the gate :) Some people may absolutely need to dig in a little more than this does and take a bit more time with it, and that is totally normal. One of the wonderful things about FPV is everyone comes in with different levels of previous experience with different kinds of hobbies and the journey is unique every time!

Hi Bacon. My TX isnt broadcasting a wifi signal.... its a Onboard UART ExpressLRS 2.4GHz Receiver on my crux35 v2. Neither my phone nor PC can find it
Hmmmm, hopefully it is something simple! What kind of light pattern are you getting on the ELRS receiver light? It should be green and near the edge of the board. The one toward the middle is the status light, so it will kind of do its own thing.
@Bacon Ninja FPV hi bacon, I figured it out. My phone never did find the signal, but I had to hold the drone 6 inches from my PCs wifi card lol. Any further and the signal would drop! Now I'm having an issue where when I plug my drone into betaflight nothing happens. No lights or com recognition. I even tried impulse rc and driver updates. Not sure if I had flashed it wrong....
Hey man quick question..I have the literadio3 elrs and have bound my mobula7 1s with the spi elrs and my rekon 4fr with an external elrs rx and they bound in 2 seconds but I can't get my cineape 25 with external elrs rx to bind🤔 could it be because the newest version of elrs is on the rx ? Because the version on my radio is 2.0...any help would be great thanks
sorry it took me so long to see this...YT's comments have been really janky for me lately :( I would be willing to bet that your cineape25 has a v3 version of ELRS and that isn't going to bind up with a v2 version on your lite radio...unfortunately. I haven't dont an ELRS upgrade on that radio yet, although I do have one I am doing some testing with that I should get to do it on soon. Hopefully it isn't too much of a pain to get updated!
@Bacon Ninja FPV thanks for replying man I appreciate it👍🏼 yeah I had to flash my receiver down to 2.5.2 and it works however what sucks is betafpv isn't releasing a 3.0 update of elrs for the literadio3 elrs version....I bought it because it was cheap and then a month later they came out with the literadio3 pro....smh....I'm just going to get a radiomaster boxer 4in1 and get a elrs module and be set forever lol because I fly rc planes as well so I want a radio that I can use for both✌🏼
I got problems to bind my brand new Nazgul5 v2 F7 to my LiteRadio 3. I've heard I must flash both receiver and RC to make them compatible, but I'm not being able to understand to which version I should flash them neither to understand how to flash it.
So with the Lite Radio 3 Pro you will probably want to pull the user manual from BetaFPV and that flashing process will most likely be over USB. As for the quad though, you can totally do that one over WiFi. I would go with version 3.2 since it is the newest, and there are targets in the ELRS configurator for both the radio and the quad's receiver in there. For your quad, there are only 2 options listed under the iFlight 2.4g selecting in the configurator, and you will want the RX :)
@@BaconNinjaFPV yeah man, I had to flash my LiteRadio to last version, and the RX to the 2.5.2 that is the last version compatible with that RC, it sucks. Finally binded it, but screwed it up and erased every single drone setting. Could get the dump file, but motors make a weird noise now

Hey, thanks for the sub! To use the method I am showing in the video, you are going to want to use the build button rather than build and flash. Using build and flash expects that your radio is connected over USB and has everything set up to flash via that method which is why you are getting a com error...which kind of rarely works if I am being honest, lol. I chose the wifi method for this one since it has a very high success rate compared to the bind and flash options.
@@BaconNinjaFPV I think I finally got that to work last night but now none of my drones will bind to the tx do I have to update all of my receivers now. I've always just used the 3 plug method to bind them before and now wish I would have just left them alone lol

I did a little video on troubleshooting ELRS that may help you out. It is a few weeks back on the channel, but it takes a look at the blink codes on your receiver to help point in the right direction as to what may be going on :)

Wow this is the best rc product so easy to use and grea investment of $600 i ever spent . Thanks . No . Not really . One orxvtx worked out of 9 rx and 3 tx . Nano 2.4 , nano 900 , micro 900mhz and multiple recievers . Then the anettan got prop caught and ripped up the rx .

I hope you see this!! I am following the video and got to the point of selecting expresslrs from the list of tools and when i do i get a blank screen that just says loading at the top.
Ah, that one does happen! Usually it means you don't have the correct module selected in the model settings for the current model your radio is set to. You will want to go into the model settings and make sure you have it set to either use internal or external RF, whichever one your ELRS transmitter is in. Once you have that set up, it should load properly :) if that still doesn't work, there are some more advanced baud rate settings to double check as well.

Hi thanks so much for the complete video, I have some new receivers Bayck ELRS 2.4G they do connect somehow they act funny and keep disconnecting, I took my micro sd card out and then I went to the tools there’s so much junk in there, probably that’s what’s causing conflicts, could you tell me what should be in the tools folder, I know every radio is deferent buy more or less thanks so much 😊
hmmmm, the extra stuff on the SD card shouldn't be causing you any trouble with the receivers disconnecting. Are they disconnecting when you are on USB power or with a pack plugged in? Sometimes they act funny if they aren't quite getting the full 5v they need, or sometimes even when the amp draw they have available isnt sufficient.

power should be fine, I’m powering with a ESC, I think is something in the radio because all 3 receivers same problem they all loos telemetry in like 15 seconds then connects again, they all have new version 3.2.1 receiver and express LRS module, i have a video if I could send it some where thanks for the response

How do you know if its a spi based quad ?
The best way to tell will be to take a look at the receiver tab of betaflight. In there you will either see Serial UART or SPI selected in the first drop down on the right side. Other than that, you sometimes have to dig through the manufacturer specs for the board since SPI receivers are integrated on them. It can be tricky though since UART receivers are getting the same integration more and more...the Betaflight way wont lie thought :)
Great VIDEO. i do have a question, in the GEPRC site says that for my drone which is the "GEPRC Tern-LR40 HD O3 Long Range FPV" the receiver for 2.4 elrs is "GEPRC ELRS24" so when in ELRS configurator and i want to flash the receiver (not the controller) the options are "GEPRC Nano 2.4GHz PA100 RX", "GEPRC Nano(SE) 2.4GHz RX" and "GEPRC Dual Diversity 2.4GHz RX" do you have any idea which one is it?
can you use regular 2.4 T antennas on elrs or do the have to be designated ELRS T antenna
You sure can! As long as it is tuned for 2.4ghz and has a UFL connector it will work just fine. Lots of people run the same antennas used by ghost and tracer on ELRS receivers :)
@@BaconNinjaFPV I assumed as the antennas are tuned for the 2.4 frequency but I didn’t want to take that leap without confirmation. Switching from tracer to ELRS and wanted to reuse my old antennas as they are already mounted lol. Many thanks on the quick replies as well.

Hello I just updated my radiomaster TX16s to Edge TX 2.9.4 Providence, from there I set the internal module type to CRSF, when doing so I checked to make sure I had the latest LUA script of the Express LRS, I even rebuilt it and save to the SD card in the specified folder, upon trying to execute Express LRS, I get stuck on the loading screen with no progress to be made. Any help would be appreciated.
I flash my TX using UART, and I run SPI-based receivers. It's an extra bit of fiddley-work with the Happymodel ES24TX Pro module. Gotta take the top plate off to access the USB port, and configure some DIP switches before flashing. I'm a bit of a stickler at running the latest firmware, so I run BF 4.4.2 and ELRS 3.3. I doubt I'll go further with the firmware, as the FCs are 411s which don't have the capacity to take BF4.5 without some phukkery.
