    Very informative videos. Wanting them to continue thru the whole engine. Please add more!
    One small item that would make the series better for me was if you could tell Tony that every time he "sets" down a tool, he's "throwing" it. It is so loud that I have to turn down my sound but then cant hear him when he speaks. I know, I know...whiny but hey, maybe the mic could be moved.....

    I'd personally tighten the cam sprocket nut down before checking the sprocket heights. Also it's pointless setting up the engine to exactly TDC when installing standard cam timing gear. Both the crank and cam are keyed to the sprockets, so there is no built in adjustment. Put the chain on the sprockets so the timing marks are facing each other then install on the engine and if needed make any small adjustments to align to keyways by turning the crank.

    Good video, except the dial indicator should be dead center of the piston . Having it touching the outer edge of the piston can give false reading due to piston rock.

    Ah..a 'proper' timing chain tensioner, a vast improvement on the two 8G549 rubber tensioner rings used on the earlier BMC 'A' Series engines.

      yeah exactly what i was thinking...did my apprenticeship on these.never saw a tensioner like that before.good idea though

    @wcontestabile I'm assuming you mean the ones that go into the front main bearing cap? Those bolts are 5/8" long (measuring under the head. Or, if you are using the countersunk style bolts there the threaded portion is only about 7/16"

    What kind of grease/sealant do you apply on front plate gasket?

  • @minimania
    @minimania  12 років тому +1

    A few taps on a cast iron piece like this from a ball peen hammer isn't going to do any damage. Tony has 30 years of experience in the trade, he certainly isn't going to do anything that would damage an engine part - at least not purposefully.

    Get some rubber mats for them metal tables or you will be all deaf from chucking stuff on them!!!!!!

    Is this just regular spray adhesive used on the gasket between the block and the timing plate? Or would you recommend a gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket?

    • @minimania
      @minimania  4 роки тому +1

      The way Tony does it is to paint both sides of the gasket with Permatex Hi Tack.

    Hi - I've just stripped my 998 A+ and rebuilt it using all of the same parts. Do I need to worry about checking all of this ??? (I assume nothing would have changed)

      If the camshaft is the same and the timing gears went back on in the exact same way, then no, you shouldn't have any timing issues.

    Help! I'm having problems with my camshaft. In the video, Tony states at 4:00 that there "should not be any up and down movement whatsoever". I have quite a large amount of up and down movement and have no idea whats causing it and how to fix. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

      That would caused by a worn cam thrust. You'll want to replace that with a new one to take up the end float there:

    might sound a stupid question but could someone please tell me the tool that is used to turn the crank?

    • @minimania
      @minimania  9 років тому

      That's a custom tool we made here at Mini Mania. It has a piece of square stock that indexes into the slot in the end of the crank that normally accepts the locking plate key which connects the crank to the flywheel. When you build a lot of engines it's real convenient to have something like this on hand!

    What paint code is that engine and what is the colour called

    • @minimania
      @minimania  7 років тому +1

      That color is called MOWOG Green. Here's the link: www.minimania.com/part/GAP410-REP/Austin-Mini-Engine-Paint-Mowog-Green

    it's pretty hard for a novice to understand this video, simply lining up the two small dots on the sprockets should set the cam timing perfect, but because of wear and British engineering every engine is different and it never does, so what he's dooing is finding top dead center on the cam lobe.. it should be at 107 degrees from the pistons top dead center.. but it most likely won't be.. because the cam lobe is very round it's hard to find so you take 5 degrees from each side and find the middle

    • @minimania
      @minimania  7 років тому

      Yes, a fair enough description. Not sure I'd agree with the British engineering comment but OK.
