New R255 Hybrid Locomotives for NYC Subway - Delivery of First Wabtec-MPI R255, HL002

Here are several videos taken on May 16, 2024, featuring the first MPI R255 hybrid locomotive, HL002, delivered and mostly unveiled at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal!
The R255 is a new locomotive that is intended to replace older NYC Subway locomotives (R37, R41, R43, R47, R52). The R255 locomotives are highly similar to the R156 locomotives - also built by MPI - but they spot such differences as a green stripe and HL-series numbering as opposed to the OL-series numbering for locomotives. Most noticeable, the R255 can operate in a battery-electric-only mode, which should reduce fuel emissions in the underground parts of the subway. The NYC Subway is expected to receive 25 of these R255 hybrid locomotives, but may order an additional 45 if the locomotives prove to be worthy.

What is the point of batteries when every piece of underground track is already electrified?
