Walk into any forest, and beneath your feet is an elaborate social network that helps make life on Earth possible. It’s called the “Wood Wide Web”, a massive and intricate network of fungi that exchange water, nutrients, and chemical signals with the plants they’re living in a symbiotic relationship with. This network of fungi is essential to the health and function of forests and to controlling climate change itself. You’re about to look at fungi in a whole new way!

TY for bringing this newer research to this channel. I read about this Two yrs ago. One of the foresters who was trying to tell the world about this has been ignored most of his career. He got a boost from a young female scientist who started studying trees when she was 10 yo. It took her a while to get credibility but her main general question she had an approximate answer. She had wondered if trees could “talk” to one another. She developed a simple chemical experiment and it was positive. Well that led to further questions and eventually university. She does meet this forester guy and he does collaborate with her. The world knows so much more now. She is who listened to the now old forester and then by his guidance began doing enlightening experiments that elucidated this fungi network. He also led her to other foresters that he had been in communication for many years across the world. She inspired other scientists to also study the forests’ roots and partnerships. So this information is not overnight in coming; but rather is a story of the last century coming into the 21st century.

There are actually at least 7 different types of mycorrhizae ! and the distribution of the two micorrhizae presented are not as cleaved as you present ! In most ecosystems you can actually find both ECM and AM in the same tree...
Anyway, it's such a pleasure to hear about such important and ignored topic !
(and i'm not saying this because it's my PhD topic ;))

I'd love to know more about this, Mycology is very interesting and makes me wish I went and studied in this field/ something similar instead of my current one (which is design-related, which I do enjoy too, but I think I'd enjoy this field more tbh). Good luck with your PhD! I'm not sure how these things work, but I'm sure PhD students publish their papers in journals and stuff, right? If so, I would love to read it when it's complete :)

@@Manj_J sure, I will ! But scientific papers use biological concepts that can be tough to read and understand... I'll see if I find something suited to a non-scientific audience!

People used to say I was crazy for mentioning the idea that trees in a forest were connected and that they could communicate and share resources. It was something I intuited but did not know the exact mechanisms of how it functioned. I swear that sometimes I would go into the forest and "feel" the network around me, in the pores of my bare feet and in my lungs.

My biggest fun fact about this is that the oldest, heaviest and biggest living organism is a fungus that connects a forest somewhere in Canada. Also we biologists always said with a little grin and wink that fungi are extremely immobilised animals. That's wrong of course but if you look at really old animals groups like sponges there may be a noticeable resemblance.

As a child I used to believe that "the forest" is a beautifull, romantic, idyllic place full of cute, playfull animals and exciting adventures.
It turned out not to be that way. But Joe Hanson and his crew brought me back to the romantic perspective of the forest for a few moments.
This time using real stuff, not fantasies.
