@BriefCase is this box game Hunt a Killer something that can be worked on as a group ? Example: have friends meet up one night a month and work on clues & divide up the case work on separately then meet up again a month later. Or is this something a group can work through in a few hours on one Friday evening ? Just wondering. Thank you.
She was replacing her mother-in-law as lady of the house, she was remodeling the house and her husband to her liking and she was setting up to become the go-to person her husband would confide in and seek advice from....she didn't stand a chance.
Like, what would "traces of arsenic" even be? Especially back then??
@@ah-nononoo exactly, it was in SO many things back then, even cures and meds!
@@ah-nononoo fluids to be analyzed but the vomiting would have emptied the stomach.
They were redecorating. I wonder if there was arsenic in the walls they were disturbing and he died. The mother in law maybe believed that she killed her son, so she set her up.
Yeah I'm looking at the mother in law and the employee.
I feel like the mother-in-law was a bit suspicious, especially since she outwardly hated Marie... 👀
True, but would she be petty enough to kill her own son to get rid of Marie?
@@AnOddBird maybe, if she thought it might give her access to the remainder of Marie's dowry. Then again, the sister-in-law didn't like Marie, either. And what about the switched cakes????
Everyone in this case was sus.
@@AnOddBird If she thought she was losing her son to somebody she hated, it is possible, yes.
Especially considering we only have the MIL's word that those cups of eggnog were prepared by Marie and consumed by her husband
I think there was arsenic in the walls that they were redecorating and he died. The mother in law maybe believed that she killed her son, so she set her up.
The jewel theft was a surprise! But what would she gain if he died? Her freedom to marry a richer man perhaps? Then again her letters to family seemed to show she was happy? Perplexing to say the least! Glad to see you got a sponsor too!
Wow, well that escalated quickly!
One minute she was redecorating the home and sending him cakes and calling not one but TWO drs when he got sick and the next minute she’s facing the guillotine! Got to love mother in laws....
I’m with some of the others... I’m not convinced...
I’m so glad she wasn’t killed... whew!
I can't know if she was the killer or not, but I still feel sorry for her. Great narration as usual!
It's sad that she got to enjoy her freedom for such a brief time, and was probably very sick for the entirety of it. I wonder if her tuberculosis was something she had prior to her arrest or was it something she contracted in prison?
Faulty investigation once again is responsible for a prison death. Europe had many of these back in the 1600’s because disease was so prevalent back then with no medical cures.
I say she was innocent! Poor girl sent him little cakes, not a big one. She was set up. Not fair.
I agree with you.
Hmmm what about the white powder she was putting in the eggnogg?
@@oOzephyrOo that was just protein powder 🤣 probably powdered sugar!
@@oOzephyrOo or maybe the lady who said she saw her putting powder in the eggnog was really the one poisoning him.
Perhaps it was the employee who tried to poison her husband in Paris by replacing the cakes with one big poison one... But if so, why? And what about the food her husband I consumed before he died? Could he have been poisoned by her mother-in-law in order to implicate her? And if this is true, why would the Mother-in-law want to poison her own son? Did she have the medical knowledge to think or know that at that point he was dying anyway, and thus more poison would not really make any difference? And beyond that? Was the employee that her husband took to Paris in cahoots with the mother of her husband in some evil plan that never made it to court?
Charles literally catfished her into marriage. He lied about his home, his successful career, his wealth. I get that those things don't mean everything now, but back then when love was literally bought, they definitely mattered. As a woman you had to sell yourself into the best life you could find because you had no chance of making it yourself.
Its still the same if you are not well educated
@George Washington 😂
@orchid star True. Had some on a dating site and many on facebook. Its crazy to see how many scammers there are on those dating sites, facebook and instagram. I made my instagram account private so people had to ask me. Refused many.
@@iracircosa8890 I wouldn't say it's still the same as the 1900s... an uneducated woman these days has the ability to work, work hard and move up.. as a man does. They have the ability to do everything a man can do.. back then women literally didn't have that ability. I mean I get what your saying.. but a woman isn't bound to be completely destitute and unable of obtaining anything in life without a being married into a successful situation.
Ohh how rite you are it was horrible and to be honest it isnt that much better now its just less gender oriented.
Something tells me the mini cakes weren't poisoned, but the "cake" that replaced them may have been. I'm not sure who did all the poisoning, but it was done. There were 4 suspects in total though. The employee, the mother, the sister and Marie. House staff could have done it. All we know is that arsenic was the poison of choice, and it was everywhere. One man dead, and too many suspects in my mind. lol!!! Have a wonderful week!!
what purpose would the employees have to off the person they depended on for income, especially when things started to turn up again?
@@cottoncandie761 maybe he was hired to do so by someone else
I can't stop wondering about his employee, I can only presume he still worked at the foundery when they returned from their trip. The foundery was on the propery correct? I feel her suspisions about him could have been correct in some way. Perheps the Mother-in-law and this guy where "friendly"?
@@justanothermanxterrence2916 Well what reason did the mother have to kill her own son?
@@isallah1kafir196 Some people hate more than they love. People have killed family for less going against a mother's wishes. One thing that stood out was that the Mother-in-law was the main witness against Marie for poisoning the eggnog. If I had to speculate, I would believe the Mother-in-law hated Marie more than she loved her own son and would go to some serious lengths to make Marie suffer.
I don't believe she would have put into much enthusiasm for her marriage if she was just going to kill him. it's certainly possible even more possible that she was a victim circumstance
This my opinion is the best episode of briefcase ever. It wasn't too brief it was over 17 minutes it was an engrossing story and it had a proper ending which is pretty amazing for that many years ago that they had tests to detect arsenic in the body like that
I agree! V.sad case too, arsenic was in so many products back then, Im sure ppl were ingesting it daily, it was even in meds and health cures.
It was in wallpaper, makeup, powders. It was looked upon as a cute all!
Cure all
I'm glad she wasn't executed. She didn't strike me as being mean and vindictive
I still feel sorry for her since I suspect that it was the assistant who poisoned her husband.
A prison sentence back then was worse than death.
@@fadeblac5633 Amen to that.
@Chadwin Cuckslayer , its very painful. People suffer badly. I know someone who was being poisoned for a couple of weeks. They were in pain and didn't know why.
@Chadwin Cuckslayer , umm... I was saying I know someone that was poison. Me personally I have no need to poison anyone. 🤷🏽♂
If she was going to poison anybody I imagine it would have been her mother-in-law
lol
"Oh, she kills husbands, does she? I think I shall propose!" People are weird. Reminds me of Richard Ramirez's crazy little fan girls.
Hopefully, most of the would-be hubbies thought she was innocent
Difference is Ramirez's fan club knew he'd done it so were extra sick, this case so many believed her to be innocent.
@@aye70aye correct
False comparison. Ramirez's suitresses have a condition called hybristophilia. The fact that many people believed that Lafarge was innocent, suggests that her suitors have very different motives than Ramirez's suitresses.
@@lloydchristmas4547 Learned a new word! I wasn't making a comparison, however. :)
Tragic story . Marie Lafarges situation reminds me of meeting someone on the internet today. This man was not who he seemed to be financially. Thank you Brief Case.

(And my two fluffy cats, one on each side of me that run out to the living room and howl at my husband each time I decide to get up at all.. *such little snitches these two are*. Only guaranteed way for me to STAY on bedrest is watching video
If only she had courted him and saw his 'estate' she would have found out he was duping her family for money.
If only her uncle had done due diligence. I also have aristocracy in my family tree but I was raised poor. If I really sit down and think about it, I can usually tell whether you're into bondage, mannequins, etc.
Yes love me some brief case hope your ok and doing well keep em coming im loving it have a good day everyone
You have a blessed day as well😊😊
@Rico Lee email me.
Marie has lost her parents and was getting close to her husband. Did her mother have insurance on her son ? Who switched the cakes? Such a sad story.
I think she was inocent of murder.
I suspect that it was the scumbag assistant who poisoned her husband after he switched the cakes she sent.
Intriguing, can't make up my mind on this one. I would be curious to know his relationship with his mother. Maybe she did it. I don't see what would motivate her to kill her husband and why write little cakes and it turns out to be a big cake.
Maybe his employee did it and continued to poison him after to be able to marry her and get the big house.
So many possibilities!
Early morning Brief Case, thanks for the content!

Hello from France! Thanks for a case from here! Btw "funny" how she gets plenty of mariage proposals after poisoning her husband to death. What's wrong with some people!
They would be from those who believed her innocent
Ted Bundy had numerous letters of female admirers who wanted to become his mistresses .... Some think this person is innocent but some people just like the idea of guilt by proxy and a dangerous relationship I think there is a syndrome about this.
Hybristophilia, when someone is sexually attracted to someone who has committed a murder.
Good morning. I was looking forward to your fresh video this morning.
So excited to see this video! I've seen a few other cover it but know this will be the best!!! Thanks BC, you are the best, absolutely love your channel❣️🕊️
So the small chocolate cakes nobody is going to ask what happened to them💁 and how the full size cake got to him instead👀👀

These presentations are perfect, they have a great combination of sinister and spooky. The background music is not too loud and it adds an ominous quality.

Interesting, Memoirs of Madame Lafarge available to order or read online!
I think that would be a facinating read, maybe I will order it when I am next on holiday :)
I’m writing a poetry collection based off her memoirs!
Loved this one. Although I kept flashing to Madame Defarge knitting while heads dropped in the basket ( courtesy of Dickens)
Ah - you beat me to it by a couple hours. I should really read through these before I make mine (tbh, I kinda knew I was gonna be beating a dead horse.)

Ur stories always capture the reality and history of the people in ur narration! Love to hear your cases!!!

With Marie getting along better with her husband. I don't believe she would have killed him. I think his mother killed him. The go to drug a poison like arsenic to kill any rodent. Humans as well. How sad that she died 5 months later after getting out of prison. Very very sad
You’d think the mom would kill Marie though and not her son so he would still be thee to support mommy... ?hmmmm
@@kristypickett5897 Could have been the employee of his whp claimed seeing Marie putting powder in his drink. Maybe the employee was jealous, or under paid.
Good morning! 🌞 from Costa Rica, I love the way that you describe the cases.
Thanks again for another Brief Case that’s always well researched and nary. I wonder if the other expert had arrived in time would it have made a difference.
The 'witness' who saw her putting powders into her husband's food could not corroborate their claim. The food samples were kept in a cupboard that anyone could access and tamper with them. This was far too shoddy and all heresay. And why did the worker take days to hand over the parcel with the little cakes? Sounds like more than one person wanted her gone.
To sit through 90 seconds of advertising was totally worth it. Thanks for your weekly treat!
Glad you enjoyed it!

could it even be possible that they didn't know at The time to not use the same dishes they prepared arsenic for purpose of killing rodents as they prepared the food? what means did they use to wash dishes in those days? it could have been a terrible mistake
you're right. nations have some weird habits. when i got to new zealand i would watch ladies wash dishes in soap, not rinse them in water, but to put them in the drying rack. gagged me out. being american i rinse in hot water or put into my dish washer.

The LaFarge's essentially robbed Marie, & she in turn doled out her deadly brand of justice.
Absolutely loved this story, it was very fascinating and yet horrific, as well. There's alot of unanswered questions about Marie's mother in law, sister in law, husband's personal servant, as well. The reason being that Marie wasn't liked by her inlaws and her husband's personal servant and the cake mystery. I would love to read her memoirs, I'm sure they would be very interesting to say the least, period! Great investigating of this story.

So glad this crafty, gold-digging little mouse got her comeuppance. Thank God her mother in law was in the house, to advocate for her son. Without her, the servant who witnessed the poisoning would never have gotten an audience.

Love hearing about the forensics in an older case like this.
I'm not sure how I feel about the verdict. If she sent several small cakes, why did only one large cake show up? Mom-in-law didn't like her & probably didn't like the changes she was making to the home, making it her own. His manservant may have felt much the same and been in cahoots with MIL. But then, why would they poison him? Perhaps they thought they could control the situation. Or, perhaps Marie is guilty after all.
Thanks again BC! See you next week.
I feel like there was a lot of reasonable doubt in this case. Several people had motive to frame Marie. Thank you for another interesting case!
