  • The West Coast Game Park is one a my favorite places to go to see and learn about animal behavior up close and hands on. Since our first visit in 2011 we've been back a number of times and been able to be with, work with, and learn gobs about baby; tigers, lions, spotted leopards, snow leopards, bobcats (got a love bite from one), lynx, bears and more. The people who care for these animals most often live, I'm talking like 24 hours a day, with these animals so their incredible stories along with your hands on encounters with these unbelievable (like I can't believe I've got three baby tigers in my lap, or did you hear that, that little tiger just "chuffed" at me!) animals can make this place one of the most magical on earth! Do I sound like a kid again or what? It is animal lover's paradise.*
May you be blessed with a pride of young lions in your lap!

In a addition the park has hundreds of free roaming animals; deer, goats, peacocks etc plus huge elk, bison, camels, wallabies, lemurs, and one of the silliest chimps I've ever met!
*I know there are all kinds of ideas, publicity and mixed emotions about raising exotic animals. I get it, and I'm familiar with both sides to the story. Understand, these people raise exotic animals to go live in specialty parks all over the world. For many of these it is the hopes the offspring of these animals will be wild. It is the endeavors of places like this that will guarantee these animals will never die out.

Love these animals. I get so sad to see them being used in that way, for entertainment, yet I wouldn't ever turn down an opportunity to touch one either!! Im sure they live a good life but it does make my heart hurt a little!!

Hello Jade! I get the opposition, I'm pretty much the same mind. However these particular animals are raised to go back into specialty parks just like the one you mention in South Africa, and many other regions of the world. Many of these parks have rangers who work very closely and sometimes hands on to get them better acclimated to a wild environment. Although these animals will not actually be wild it is the hopes the offspring from these animals may be able to be totally wild. The reason they allow and encourage the hands on with the young ones, is to get them acclimated with humans so when they are in their new environment, they are a heck of a lot safer for the rangers to work with and be able get them used to their new environment. It's a complex issue for sure but personally I follow and agree with their reasoning.
And yeah, I'd love to look into it! I've have friends who go every year and they keep asking me to go, so who knows?

I get it, just understand this is a private breeder park where the exotic animals usually go to reserves and parks all over the world that have a low count of natural animals. Although these can be released in a wild park, they will not be wild themselves, the goal is the offspring of these animals will hopefully grow up wild. So many of these animals are in a sense released. They are conditioned to humans for the safety of the rangers who may need to help these animals get acclimated their wilder environment.
