우리 여행은 페루의 밤 공항에서 출발했다. 에어멕시코항공의 밤 01:20 비행기는 만석이었다. 밤늦게 이동하는 것은 여행 중 가장 어려운 일 중 하나였다. 그러나 우리가 택한 밤의 날개 아래, 남미에서 중미의 멕시코로 향하는 비행은 아름다운 경관을 제공했다. 아메리카 대륙을 가로지르며 태평양 해안을 따라 올라가던 비행기는 중미 멕시코의 화려한 입성을 알려주었다.
그러나 멕시코의 불멸의 도시로 향하는 여정은 우리에게 큰 행운과 동시에 도전이었다. 포포카테페틀 화산의 분화는 멕시코시티 공항으로의 출발을 좀처럼 순조롭지 않게 만들었다. 멕시코 푸에블라주에 있는 포포카테페틀 화산이 분화해 약 72㎞(45마일) 떨어진 멕시코시티 상공에서도 화산재가 발견됐다. 이에 멕시코시티 베니토 후아레스 국제공항(AICM)에서 출발하는 항공편 운항이 일부 취소됐다. 페루에서 멕시코시티로 오는 도중에 포포카테페틀 화산이 분화하는 모습을 비행기를 타고 실제로 볼 수 있었다는 것은 커다란 행운이자 두려움으로 다가왔다. 그러나 우리는 이 도전을 이겨내며 멕시코시티에 도착했다.
새벽 06:30 멕시코 시티 호드레차베스 국제공항에 도착했다. 중남미의 허브 공항답게 공항이 수 많은 여행객으로 가득했다. 멕시코의 치안 문제를 고려하여 우버택시 대신 정부에서 운영하는 안심택시를 이용했다. 이동 중에도 멕시코의 아름다운 풍경을 감상할 수 있었다.
멕시코 중부 고원 해발 2,240m에 자리 잡은 멕시코시티는 멕시코의 수도이다. 그러나, 치안이 안 좋기로 유명한 나라이다. 특히 대도시에서는 대낮에도 테러나 납치가 빈번히 일어난다. 그렇기 때문에 숙소 위치는 매우 중요하다. 레포르마는 미국 대사관이 위치해 있고 멕시코 도심 관광지가 가까워서 안전한 지역 중 하나이다.
멕시코시티는 아즈텍 제국의 수도였던 테노치티틀란의 원형이다. 이 도시는 텍스코코 호수를 간척하여 1325년에 섬을 만들고 거기에 도읍을 마련했다. 아즈텍 제국의 확장에 따라 테노치티틀란도 거대하게 확장되었고, 전성기에는 인구는 20만명에서 30만명 이상을 기록했다. 현재 멕시코시티의 거주 인구는 약 2,200만명이 넘는다
멕시코 중심가에 위치한 숙소는 멕시코시티의 관광지와 전통 시장, 맛집들이 가까워서 편리했다. 멕시코시티의 거리를 걷며 멕시코 국민 음식 타코를 찾는 것은 우리에게 큰 즐거움이었다.
다양한 종류의 타코를 맛보며 현지인들의 문화를 느낄 수 있었다. 멕시코의 거리에서 현지인들과 어울려 함께 먹는 타코 먹방 투어는 잊지 못할 추억이 되었다. 또한 멕시코시티 한인 타운에서는 우리가 그리운 한국 음식을 맛볼 수 있었다. 한인 슈퍼에서는 한국 상품들을 찾을 수 있었고, 현지에서 교민들의 한국 음식을 즐기는 것도 재미있었다. 열무 김치와 멸치볶음, 돼지갈비 등 한국의 다양한 먹거리를 맛보며 우리의 여행은 더욱 풍부해졌다. 세계 일주를 하면서 현지 음식을 맛보는 것도 중요하지만, 가끔은 한국 음식을 먹어서 원기를 회복하는 것이 중요하다.
멕시코 여행은 아름다운 자연 풍경과 다채로운 음식, 역사적인 유적지를 만나는 즐거운 경험이었다. 다음 여행지가 과테말라라는 얘기를 들었을 때도 멕시코 사람들의 따뜻한 응원과 안전한 여행을 빌어주는 마음이 우리를 격려했다. 멕시코시티의 역사적이고 유서 깊은 시민 공원에서의 여유로운 시간은 우리에게 여행의 휴식을 주었다. 멕시코에서의 훈훈한 여정은 우리에게 새로운 경험과 추억을 안겨주었고, 다음으로의 여정을 기대하게 만들었다.
Our journey began at the night airport in Peru. The 01:20 flight with Aeromexico was fully booked, making late-night travel one of the most challenging aspects of our trip. However, beneath the wings of the night we chose, the flight from South America to Central America's Mexico offered breathtaking views. As the plane traversed the Americas and followed the Pacific coast, it heralded the splendid arrival into Central Mexico.
However, our journey to the immortal city of Mexico was both fortunate and challenging. The eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano made the departure from Mexico City Airport less than smooth. Popocatepetl, located in the state of Puebla, erupted, causing volcanic ash to be found in the skies above Mexico City, about 72 km (45 miles) away. As a result, some flights departing from Benito Juarez International Airport (AICM) in Mexico City were canceled. Witnessing the eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano during our flight from Peru to Mexico City was a mix of great fortune and fear. Nonetheless, we overcame this challenge and arrived in Mexico City.
We arrived at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport (AICM) at 06:30 in the morning. As a hub airport for Central and South America, the airport was bustling with numerous travelers. Considering Mexico's security issues, we opted for government-operated safe taxis instead of Uber. Even during our commute, we were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Mexico.
Mexico City is the original form of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire.
Situated at an elevation of 2,240 meters on the Central Mexican Plateau, Mexico City serves as the capital of Mexico. However, it is renowned for its poor security. Particularly in urban areas, terrorism and kidnappings occur frequently even during daylight hours. Therefore, the location of our accommodation was crucial. Reforma, where the US Embassy is located and close to downtown tourist attractions, is one of the safe areas.
Our accommodation in the city center was convenient, close to tourist attractions, traditional markets, and restaurants of Mexico City. Walking the streets of Mexico City in search of the national dish, tacos, was a great pleasure for us. Tasting various types of tacos allowed us to experience the culture of the locals. Our taco-eating tour with locals on the streets of Mexico created unforgettable memories. Additionally, in the Korean town of Mexico City, we were able to enjoy Korean food that we missed. While it is important to taste local cuisine while traveling around the world, sometimes it is important to recover by eating Korean food. In Mexico City, we were able to enjoy Korean food even more delicious than in Korean restaurants.
Traveling in Mexico was a pleasant experience of encountering beautiful natural landscapes, diverse cuisine, and historical sites. When we heard that our next destination was Guatemala, the warm support and wishes for a safe journey from the people of Mexico touched us. Leisurely time in the historic and prestigious parks of Mexico City provided us with relaxation during our travels. Our heartwarming journey in Mexico provided us with new experiences and memories, and made us look forward to the next journey.
