My F800GS is from the year 2016, I bought it new in Mexico, I traveled with it in the summer of 2017 from Tecamac, State of Mexico to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, round trip, not a single failure, only change of tires, brakes and the main chain in Fairbanks, AK, then I brought it from Mexico to Miami where I living, in Mexico I traveled all over the country, plains, mountains, highways, roads, north to south from east to west, it is an excellent motorcycle.

I’ve had one for 45.000km, I wouldn’t trade it for a 1200, nor an 850. This is one amazing bike, it will take you anywhere you want, specially here in South America. Best bike ever!!!

I have an f800gs. A few fun facts:
    1) it was the lightest adventure bike before the tenere 700 and 790 adventure
    2) it's still faster than both those bikes
    3) the rotax twin is incredibly reliable. There are guys out there with over half a million kilometres on their engines with only basic maintenance
    4) the stock suspension is garbage

    • @Babybugex
      @Babybugex 4 роки тому

The k1200lt has poor suspension from factory as well. A dry clutch that will burn out in days if you rev it over 2k on start...and the worst break lines ever put on a 900 pound bike. other than that and the prostate killing seat it is a great bike..

You can buy the road style.

Nobody ever mentions the bmw f700gs. It’s the same 800 engine as the f800gs but more roadgoing. The 800 is like a 80/20 mix of off-road on-road. The 700 is the other way round like a 20/80. It handles better, as it’s lower and it’s easy to ride too.

Great video. But after owning both bikes, I would say that the R1200gs "feels" lighter than the f800gs or f850gs. Reason being, the weight sits lower.
Put both bikes next to each other, and lean each one over. Yes the r1200gs is wider and weighs more. But it's a serious competitor in terms of how the weight is distributed.
That being said I just bought another F800gs because of its width and price being less.

R1200gs will take up a bit more room in your garage and is heavier on the scale BUT: it’s balanced better, feels lighter, is actually easier to pick up off the ground than a f800. And anyone that thinks a f800gs has good Riad handling probably hasn’t ridden a good handling bike. The front end is light and vague. The r1200 by contrast leans over with much greater ease and confidence.

Totally different bikes, the Kawi i wouldn't take off road like you could the F800GS the R1200GS is a bear off road to handle its big and can/is done a lot but when you get into the real technical stuff you only drop it once or twice and your pooched. If you want off road go with a lighter 800GS but if your mostly 90% highway 10% dirt road go with the 1200GS. Maybe look at the new Yamaha 700 Tenere. The Kawasaki is a more road going bike, a lot of plastic to break and not really designed for off road work.

I would like your(and any others out there) recommendation on which bike to rent('hire' they call it there). Either a gs f800 or gs r1200. I'm going to rent for a week. Dollar wise, there is not much difference. For me, my experience is, I have a k1200lt 2006 that I've put on over 50k miles in four years. 40 yrs ago, I've had an r750/7 that I road cross country. I'm 66 and have had 3 others in my life. I'm not a fan getting off road, but I want to rent a BMW while I'm there. There might be some off road options for me there maybe on a beach. I like this review of the 800. I do like touring around. So, 800 or 1200? I love my LT!
    Keep pressing on brother!

I see no one responded to you. Curious what you ended up renting. I would have recommended renting the r1200/1250gs or gsa if you're road riding. The bike is insanely comfortable.

i'm 198cm, and i have an 09 myself. i think it's definitely among the best bikes for tall riders. i've tried a few variations of the triumph tiger, the africa twin and a couple of ktm's. it's for sure better than the africa twin. one of the tigers was about same (don't remember exactly which model...) and the ktm 1290 super adventure R beats it. but then, the ktm is a different class of bike, twice the price, 10 years newer and not as reliable.
BUT, i wouldn't recommend starting out on a 800gs. it's not the easiest bike to learn on. you will drop it. it's really big and heavy, and driving it feels like a hybrid between a road bike and a motocross.

I owned a '87 R100GS back in the day and I can tell you there is no motorcycle more useful and versatile than an ADV. While I never technically did "off-road" riding I did drive over curbs, highway medians when stuck in traffic, cratered parking lots, dirt roads, sketchy campground paths not to mention rough pavement and soft road shoulders.
I would be riding one now if I could get my leg over one, but I may have a RE Himmie in my future.

I had one done on my r1150gs. I personally removed it and had bmw rebuild it. Something like $500. Also they wear out between 30-70k miles. That is why every other oil change you do the final drive oil to find out if your final drive is going out.

That looks like a nice bike although I am thinking of trading up my Ninja 1000 for a Honda CB500X as I miss riding on the dirt roads and my wife won't let me take her Wrangler. LOL

Don't do a click bait title video on an old bike and btw this years model is a significantly different to the bike you are displaying, and review it like it's new. Great comparisons to the 1200.....might be too tall or too heavy for some people.
