My grandparents had a fairly large magnifying glass permanently placed on a desk as well as a side table (attached to a stand) to assist with such small prints. Looks like a fabulous undertaking.

That's a great idea! I will have a look for one, perhaps with a light on it too... that would save my eyes tremendously! I'm almost there on one mitten but my goodness... my eyeees haha
      Thanks for the tip :)

no 1 modern - make it as a jumper BUT with the look of a cardigan putting the buttons on the front even though there isn't an opening - google bestway 605 tea time jumper which gives you an example of what I mean. loving all your choices though. I'm busy knitting Dalloway from Echoes by Susan Crawford which is a top down circular knit.

This may just be what I need to do... I have the buttons but I can't imagine it looking any good open so .. a fake cardigan could be the trick.
The tea time jumper sounds familiar... I wonder if I have it. I'll go look... Thanks 😊
Ooo Susan Crawford has some lovely patterns. I just checked that one out. It's really pretty 😍 happy knitting 🧶

I love the DDR booklet! I sometimes wish that we still focused on saving paper like they did back then. It is super overwhelming at first but I've found that you actually learn a skill properly when you don't have a load of instructions. If you need any help with translating things let me know! Happy to help 😊

amazing isn't it! I think I've opened a new obsession within haha
Yes, patterns are about 15 pages long these days and I think oh my... gaaawd I can't do it. When in reality I certainly could. I like that these are short. But I think a little more info wouldn't hurt sometimes.. haha I am not aware of how I'm going to understand the huge pages when it come to actually finding anything on them but... maybe one day.. and a magnifying glass later ;) Thanks - I will holla if I need you :)

Just made a jumper in the most lovely light pink..😍 and if I get those done this next year and finish my wip's it will be a success for me.

So. Many. Plans.! In the words of Han Solo - good luck, you're gonna need it 😁 Jk, imho knitting plans and ideas are made to be altered and adapted, much like the projects themselves... I'll be happy to see whatever is going to appear on this channel!
About the "mittelstark" - my speculated guess is that they mean something between fingering and sport weight. I know that most German brands that have been around since ca. forever (Schachenmayr for example) used to name their yarns after the number of plies, much like Australia (and in part, the UK) still seems to do. The infamous 3ply was something that apparently still was around in the 1990s in some variety, at least I own a knitting book from the 90s, and they refer to a "Schachenmayr 3ply" that knits up at a pretty small gauge (34-38 sts per 10cm) on about 2.0mm needles. The most common other yarn types seemed to be 4ply, 6ply and 8ply. 8ply seems to have been a heavier DK, 6ply a lighter DK and 4ply something between a light and a heavy fingering, probably depending on brand and fibre. So, "mittelstark" could have been any 4- or 6ply that created a fabric that you liked, and on whatever vaguely appropriate needles you had at hand. (Keep in mind that in post-war Europe, people probably didn't own multiple sets of needles in every possible size, they likely owned one "thin" pair, maybe one "large" pair, plus a few of the "middle" sizes - and then just swatched and made do with whatever worked "well enough"!)
Another speculation of mine is that fabrics and gauges in the olden days tended to be a little denser and tighter than what we're used to now. Things were meant to last (especially in extremely tight-budgeted DDR households), and dense knits are less prone to pilling and wearing out. When I look at my old Norwegian patterns, they often recommend to knit up "Peer Gynt", a worsted weight yarn that's actually still in production, at a 24-st gauge per 10cm. This is pretty much "waterproof, will stand up on its own" territory (and I've used it that way). Nowadays, yarn labels recommend a gauge of 18 to 21 stitches, and I've seen patterns designed for it at 16 st/10cm.
So, for whatever it's worth: "mittelstark" could be anything from heavy fingering to light DK, and it would absolutely depend on how you like your fabric at the recommended gauge. Needle size isn't a good point of reference, and I know swatches lie (my own do, too), but I think you'd still do well with casting on a few stitches and just playing around with a few yarn and needle size options. There is a middle ground between swatching religiously and not swatching at all... 😉 Same goes for combining Finull with the other yarn, maybe?
Happy knitting, and have a gloriously crafty 2024!

This infamous 3 ply yarn should make a reappearance... I have a thousand and one patterns begging for it! My sport weight yarns never give me the tension and the correct size garment, so I always adjust the stitch count. I just like the fabric so much better with sport vs fingering weight. Fingering weight yarn and 3.75mm just looks awful when combined with me and my tension. But sport weight and 3mm gives me a fabric I like. Just a lot of maths that follows! So far I've had an ok success rate.... sort of ha
Funny you should mention the needles. My neighbour just gave me her needles from the DDR. She wasn't a big knitter but she gave me at least 8 circulars :)
I like to use my sleeves as my gauge swatch. That way I know if it's going to fit because I can feel whether it's tight or too big. I just don't knit anything if I have to swatch. But if I'm making progress by knitting a sleeve, I am happy. I can rip the sleeve back and start again or I can keep going and adjust things. Much happier place for me :)

I’m currently knitting my first Love Note jumper by Tin Can Knits. But as a side project, I have just re-casted the gingerbread man sock by Stone something knits. It’s my third attempt! This time I’ve gone up to a size 2.75mm 9” circular needle in hopes it will go over my instep. I’ve never had so much trouble with getting a sick to fit.
I also hope to knit a pair of cashmere blend fingerless mitts for my daughter (need a pattern) who’s graduating this March (earned an MBA).
Any suggestions would be welcomed ❤

I love all of it! Especially the kitty mittens ❤ probably the only thing that would fit me 🥴 I just spent ages browsing the links you kindly put in for us. Thank you ❤️ I am looking forward to seeing what you make this year. I'm currently working on socks, nothing exciting, but I enjoy knitting socks. I, too, have a "make 99" list 😂 the trouble with my make 99 is that it keeps growing, I make things, but they never seem to be from my planned makes 🤷🏻

    • @emilykatemadethis
      @emilykatemadethis  11 місяців тому

      They're cute hey :)
Ah none of them would fit me unless I tackle them with maths and alterations. That's the fun part ;) torturous fun ha
oh gosh yes, why is this the case? I feel like this happens with do to lists. Today I did so much, and I went to tick things off my list, and none of them were on there! I actually added "feed compost worms" just so I could tick it off the list haha
Socks are always good :) I would love to enjoy sock knitting more. I like buying sock patterns and adding them to my list, but somehow I can knit sleeves faster than a pair of socks ha
