This is honestly the first family on this show I’ve watched and didn’t like nor agree with. There’s a fine line between discipline, teaching your children respect and giving boundaries and just completely controlling every aspect of their lives not letting them grow up and make mistakes.

So maybe you can help me understand this. The conversation the mom had with Jess outside the church. Jess had been walking around smoking and when she asked her, she admitted she had been smoking and then gave up the rest of her cigarettes. Yet she got in trouble for "lying" how did she lie? She admitted she was smoking and gave up the rest of her cigarettes. It sounds honest to me

The thing that made me the most angry was the woman who told Jess to reply "it's your free lunch" to anyone who asked her what was being served. That is someone who volunteers just to feel good about themself and doesn't care one bit about the human being standing in front of them.
No she only said for just to say that if the people were being rude about what was being served and the way it looked. She didn't mean if somebody just wanted to know she said "if they get smart about it" which means if they are rude about it
I think it was that she wanted them to be informed that it's free and they don't have to worry about paying anything for it so that they can enjoy it worry-free.

So she said that in case anyone was rude or complaining about the food to remind them that it’s free and they shouldn’t be complaining, but instead should just be grateful

I found this episode very one sided. Jess really tried hard, she was honest and just lovely and the boy was disrespectful and misogynistic. I think the parents are going too far with how they're raising their kids. I understand no swearing, but they're being so controlling and their children won't be able to develop themselves to be their own individuals. Their kids are going to rebel eventually, and it's up to the parents to learn why and try to understand what theirkids are feeling.
These young people in the family have enough energy to do interesting things with their time and develop skills & education. Isn’t it better than almost dying of liver failure and going right back at it? How about abusing your grandparents? How’s that working out?
