Going to make a pot like that. I’m stuck on a base and can’t get a normal backpacking type gear. With mouths to feed I can’t order any either. Nice kit, Sir. Well done.
Excellent! Some folks may be concerned about the coating inside the can. What I do is burn the coating off by putting the can into a hot fire for awhile.
This is one of the simplest and best explained cook kit. All very well thought out with all the clever pieces! wow! thank you for showing this! Especially the wind screen. Costs less for alluminum foil than alluminum. sheets from hobby lobby. Fantastic!!!
Be sure the burn out the plastic lining inside your cook pot with denatured alcohol so you don't have any of the crud in your food. Besides this awesome diy cook kit! :)
Let me first say OMG Tang!!!! Grew up on it and loved it , but sadly just cant get it amymore in Australia. To say I watch hiking videos a lot is an understatement. This by far, is the best, cheapest, most lightweight, readily available, easy to make and carry cook kit I have come across. After tomorrow this will be my new cook kit. Thankyou for taking the time to share. Big kisses from Aus. XXX
Great tutorial Tom! While I love buying and reviewing gear, you just can't beat making stuff yourself and optimising for the perfect light weight and efficient setup! Great weight at the end too including the cosy. Superb!
Absolutely! There’s something so fun about making and customizing your cook kit that makes them more satisfying that even an omnifuel or trangia cookset
That's a neat cook kit! Great idea, and it would be good to just have around even if the power went out. It would be a great project for the scouts too!
This is perfect for meals and a cup of joe in the woods and takes up no room or weight in my small hunting pack.please put me in for one on the drawing ,shit I would buy one if you want.keep up the vids
That is a very economical cook kit and it works well. Nice offer on the give away. I will bow out as i'm in Canada and shipping is more costly than the product. I have made the same stove and a pot cozy for my pot. A great system for sure.....Take care, Bluefin.
Thanks for sharing and great vid. Amazing what a thinker can accomplish. Great little stove and yes I.would love to have it. Best wishes from N. E. Texas.
'mornin, Tom; Now, ain't that the neatest lil set-up. Would be a treat to have a chance at this, as the Grand-Daughter has all she needs, 'cept for this sysyem. Thanks 4 sharing a simple DIY. Hoping all's well there with you & yours. ATB Terry God Bless
Absolutely love it. I've got the wicking fancy feast stove and am hoping the Busches beans don't have a liner that will melt into food. I've seen something similar and think this is absolutely amazing. Time is pretty much all this costs. Very handy of you.
Tom it is good to see the few that are left here on you tube making stoves again. man it seems everyone of us old youtubers are long gone.. me, smoke eater, simdog, Sousavill with his fire starter raviolis and so on. Anyway good job
I hear ya and I miss everybody too !!! Its not the same anymore...but we must persevere ...Thanks for watching! ohhh and I still have the first Georgia Heat!! LOL
Awesome! I have everything except the makings for the Cozee and the denatured alcohol. Great video, great ideas! (I did stay for the whole video but I’m sure that thing is long gone by now!😂)
In our sophisticated world it is refreshing to once again be reminded of the simplicity of things that work just as well. Great video. If your looking for a good hike or an over niter check out Stevens lake just out of Mullan Idaho
Great, simple vid. Are there any other plastic containers like the Tang one that a person could use? Tang not available in my area. Also do you end up burning out the plastic liner in the can before you ingest anything you cook in it?
Great nesting setup and economical too. Question: how do you keep the soot from the cook can from getting inside the white rehydrating container? I suppose using baggies to rehydrate would cover it.
I finally got the Tang container and then had to search for your video. I've heard you should burn out the coating on the inside of the can before first time cooking in it.
This is really impressive! Love the whole little compact kit! Question: do you know if bean containers have "liners". I've been hearing from my research that some cans have a bpa liner which is bad for you. I'd love to make one of these.
I think all food cans have the lining inside now. I was told that you just have to boil water in it a couple times & the lining will cook right off. Just be sure to throw away the water from those first boils.
@@swtsoph I’ve found that apparently coffee cans do t have a liner! I just made a pot from one of those on my channel... but I appreciated the input you gave for my research at the time. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the informative video. I’m Definitely gonna try to make one of those. Sadly it’s 2018 so you already gave that one away LOL be blessed my friend. John
I am using a Vienna sausage can instead of a catfood can. It is punched the exact same way. But when I put the can on it, the flame extinguishes. The fuel is either denatured alcohol or 91 pct rubbing alcohol. If I don't get it up an above the flames, it dies out.
It could be that your not giving the fuel enough time to heat up. Try giving the fuel a full minute burn before setting your pot on the stove. The smaller can diameter might need smaller holes as well. Good luck to you!
I tried again and it failed. The only difference was the wind break. I was using foil around 1/2 the burner and pot. When I removed the foil, it stayed lit. So I put it into a ventilated 2 pound coffee can, put the pot right on the Vienna can and success! Thanks. I see now that your windbreak is an inch or more off the can and my foil was almost on the can.
So I built and used it last weekend for an overnight trip. Worked great! The group sat and stared at it while I set up my hammock for the night. I was done with my hammock and my water was boiling on 20ml of fuel in 12 minutes. I made a fancy feast starlyte stove. The center burn works better with smaller diameter pots.
If you are in a campsite with a campfire then use the existing fire. Liquid fuels can be problematic near open flames and besides you can conserve your fuels.
Use a fire ring is up to the hiker/camper if not under a fire ban. Each heating source has its own advantages and disadvantages. Not using liquid fuels near open flame is pretty obvious for most people. I have never had to conserve fuel on a well planned trip. But all of this has nothing to do with the vid or what I was showing.
No offense intended. I only urge caution because a Boy Scout Leader after teaching boys how to make a simple alcohol stove decided to fill and light it in camp near a campfire, with horrible results. Also, I've watched many videos where someone would demonstrate a fire making method in the presence of a campfire, resulting in wasting resources. Example: If you have a candle lit, then why use your matches to light your campfire, stove or cigarette? Happy trails.
Don't throw that fancy feast in the trash just cause you don't have a kitty. Add some black pepper and garlic and it's better than an MRE any day. Thanks Tom.
Absolutely BADASS. I have watched this several times over the past year or so. The weight to cost ratio is stunning. Kudos from a cheap bastard.
Thanks for watching! Happy you like it!
awesome video alot of kids that are scouts need a cheap and easy cook kit for starting out
Just found your video. I love this DIY set up. Most complete set I've seen. Well done!!! Thank you!!!
Excellent video. Thank you for your step by step instructions. I'm a Trail Life leader and the boys can now make their own inexpensive cook kits!

Sinfonian Barelytone - I have the wicking fancy feast stove also and would recommend it.
You can even make your own billy pot bail, or a handle with stainless steel or copper wire for your pot. :)

+TomsBackwoods okay I PM'ed you on Facebook. it was the easiest option. I could find. let me know if that's okay.
You could also mark the side of the plastic container for 1\4,1\4,3\4,&1 cup.
Great Idea! Thanks!
i like to use these little stoves, cheap and good
nice set up
Thanks so much!

Thanks for watching! I hope you like it!
Great nesting setup and economical too. Question: how do you keep the soot from the cook can from getting inside the white rehydrating container? I suppose using baggies to rehydrate would cover it.
Ya Baggies work great but if your using denatured alcohol or HEET i don't find any soot on the pot. but a camp fire would be a different story!
I finally got the Tang container and then had to search for your video. I've heard you should burn out the coating on the inside of the can before first time cooking in it.

did the tin can have a liner in it
I'm gonna have to try this. Do I need to burn off the coating on the pot?
Probably should. But I haven't had a problem yet. Its up to you!
Very cool...what type of alcohol is it and where can you buy it? Its not rubbing alcohol right? Liquid fuel of some sort...
Denatured Alcohol . You can find it at paint stores or hardware stores. Or yellow bottled HEET works welll.
Beware of using HEET etc. some of that stuff is highly toxic and you don't want it anywhere near the food you eat. Just FYI.
Pretty fricken cool
Thanks for watching!
Great for ramen noodles
