    A careful examination of ALL "Twilight Zone" episodes will show that sets, props, and costumes were used many times in different episodes to save money (the show was often over budget anyway; Serling wanted maximum quality). Two cases in point: the underside and ramp of the flying saucer, and some space suits.

    • @stan.rarick8556
      @stan.rarick8556 3 місяці тому +2

      The props for the flying saucer and other items (used in IIRC 7 different Twilight Zones) were from the movie Forbidden Planet. Both the movie and Twilight Zone were filmed at MGM, so the same in-house prop department

    Great information. Before reruns, VHS, or streaming…. It was one and done. The Hollywood studio system used the same houses, sets, and props all of the time. It was a business that was most concerned about entertainment and the profit from giving the public what it wanted to see. My favorite reuse was on Dragnet. They not only used the props many times but the same group of actors would play different characters in the same season. Just add glasses, change the clothes, wear a wig , and change from a good guys to a bad guy. It’s great to watch the same actor go from a crook to a cop in just a few weeks.What a country of opportunity.

    As federal and state laws changed over time, Hollywood grudgingly learned to adapt and carve out exceptions for itself. This was especially necessary with regard to the types of firearms which have been so prevalent in the film industry throughout its history. But it wasn't always this way. In the early days of motion pictures it was not uncommon to use real, unaltered firearms, and live ammunition. As you might expect, this resulted in the occasional death or injury of an actor or stuntman (long predating Alec Baldwin and "Rust"). Jimmy Cagney was nearly killed by live machine gun fire in "The Public Enemy" and this led him to help form and promote the Screen Actors Guild. Blank ammunition and squibs became mandatory and replaced live ammo and real bullet strikes. In 1934 the federal registration of machine guns required the large prop rental houses to comply, but the law was not heavily enforced for many years and illegal exceptions sometimes unintentionally existed. For example, during the first season of the 1960s spy series "The Man from UNCLE", agent Napoleon Solo carried a Mauser pistol (and later a Walther pistol) that could be reconfigured into a carbine with a fake silencer. A Treasury agent noticed this and visited the set to inquire if the firearm had been legally registered as a short barrel rifle. The prop man who created the conversion had assumed it was legal because it only fired blanks. Rather than confiscate it and arrest those involved (theoretically including the actors), he had them register each modified gun and pay the $200 registration tax per firearm. In retrospect this story seems rather humorous, but imagine how this would be handled today with an early morning no-knock raid on the studio by heavily armed agents.

    I had once read years ago about the logistical hassle of actually being able to use a slot machine for the story purposes and even I had wondered: "But why would it illegal for a prop house to fabricate a fake slot machine for prop purposes?" OK, the quick answer is to avoid anyone using the prop for a criminal purpose. However there would be ways around that risk, partly tanks to the lower resolution images could achieve back then. They *could* use mirror images shots, so the intricate pattern of the machine's metal ornamentation could actually read, "Movie prop - not a real slot game." (That's supposed to OK for prop currency.) The facing design, in reverse, could obscure the real life warning from viewers. I mean, it's cool regs and laws were so keen on keeping the games "honest" but think about prop needs a little, too!

    I don't have a citation, but I *think* there is another loophole on display with that slot machine. In an attempt to subvert gambling laws, slot machine were built where each pull of the lever would dump out the winnings from the prior pull (thus the "twin jackpot" and "No1/No2"), the theory being that the operator knows with certainty what each pull will give them and thus "isn't gambling".

    That's what I heard - they they had to get permission from the police to use an actual working slot machine, and they had to do so for two separate episodes. That machine was probably the only one the local police office had confiscated, but I probably never noticed it was the same machine (since they played with it for The Fever to give it a more human face). Not unusual for TZ to reuse props - after all, that spaceship from Forbidden Planet was used at least a dozen times!
    And I always presumed that any other slot machines in the scene were non-working props, and they just needed the one working machine since it would be clearly obvious in close-up. But the cops had to keep an eye on everything - just in case.

    It's nice to know the backstory, but props and sets are constantly reused. I've noticed the same props and locales across many TV shows and movies. I've been around for a long time (official boomer) so that may be my advantage.

    There's a another episode in which this slot machine appears. The episode is 'It's a Nice Place to Visit', also from season 1 it was episode 28. and It aired in April of 1960. Larry Blyden stars as a robber is killed during a hold up and mistakenly thinks he's in Heaven. In the video he gets to enjoy all of his vices which includes gambling. During the episode he plays this same slot machine at least twice. His guide in heaven which actually turns out to be Hell, is Mr. Pip played by Sebastian Cabot of ''Family Affair' fame. It ends with the robber eventually gets bored with always winning and nothing ever going wrong and demands to be sent to the other place and Mr. Pip informs him that he's already there.

    Back in the day, people were more inclined to reuse items instead of scrapping or selling things like we do today. It would be amazing to see how many shows and movies reused the same things, maybe a bit augmented for what it was needed for.

    So I wonder if the slot machine was confiscated from a police station and the TZ crew used it in two separate episodes, were the episodes filmed back to back or was the same device confiscated twice? 🤔
    Also wonder if Gary Marshall was inspired by this particular episode to come up with the name Happy Days? Or even the diner concept? 😮

    I’m sure they use the same props for the amusement park scenes of “Perchance to dream“ and “In praise of PIP.” By the way, didn’t it seem odd the way they use the word PIP in the episode “In praise of Pip” and also Sebastian Cabot used it in “A nice place to visit” to summon him if Mr Valentine needed something.
