Thank you for the kind words! As for tartaros, I think it's a connector of some sort between modern Aperture (upper level) and older Aperture (lower level). In the game we see a path from the tartaros to test shaft 09, containing gel-related testing spheres, but there also may be path connecting tartaros with other test shafts. So tartaros may also be considered as a 'hub' for all the test shafts.
“Tartaros” is a reference to the ancient Greek underworld of Tartarus - a dungeon where the damned were condemned to torture and torment and the Titans of old were imprisoned by the gods - in this case, it’s where the haunted past of Old Aperture is locked away and condemned forever; Aperture’s literal underworld. “09” is in reference to Test Shaft 09, the part of Old Aperture through which Chell travels upwards to get back to new Aperture.
