This is a brilliant coaching video on pace bowling. I am highly suspicious of a lot of what is taught these days, but this is spot on. Congratulations to McDermott and CA.
well there are a lot 'coaches' out there who are just hacks. whether in tennis, football, mountain biking, whatever. they're just out to make some money giving bad advice. McDermott the real mccoy.
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to improve your cricket game download for pc try Debuncar Play Cricket Aid (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate got cool success with it.
Great t to see Craig McDermott after such a long time. Aussies brings to much technicality in game and takes out the flair &natural Talent of fast bowlers. 2 cents from Pakistan
But I think that's the Reason ... They're able to Generate Consistent World Fast Bowlers throughout Generations Now... McDermott... McGrath... Lee, Johnson, Starc n Now Cummins
@Ahmed Mamundzai, I think you are confusing seam swing with rough-surface swing. During a cricket match, the ball condition changes into three distinct phases. In each phase you will require technique specific to the phase to swing the ball. Phase 1 (New Ball): In the beginning of the match the ball is new and shiny. This ball can swing in EITHER direction. The bowler use the seam position to swing in or out. There is no rough surface so it does not matter which side of ball you grip. What matters is the angle of the seam at the point of delivery. The ball will swing towards the angle of the seam. Phase 2 (slightly worn out): After 10 or 15 overs, the ball no longer remains shiny on both sides. At this stage, the fielding team chooses a side of the ball that they want to maintain shine on and discard the other side. This when maintained well will leave one side of the ball shiny and the other a bit rough. Now, the ball will swing towards the rough side. (Tip: That does not mean the seam based swing no longer works in the second phase, it still works and a smart bowler will make use of both to either amplify swing or to delay it). Phase 3 (completely worn out): After 35 overs, the ball no longer has the shine it had from second phase. The shine is very little and no longer swings because of counter rough side. At this stage, the fielder maintain the shiny side still by applying natural fluid (sweat & saliva) on the shiny side. The aim is no longer to maintain shine but to keep one side wet so that it becomes heavier and the other side scuffed and lighter. Now, the ball is ready for reverse swing. The ball will swing towards the direction of 'shine/wet' side. Note, for this reverse swing to happen the minimum speed is 135kph. Any less than this, ball may not swing or may swing conventionally i.e., slight swing towards shiny side.
If only I knew all that back in 1986 when I was 12 and steaming in from the chook shed end in the backyard at Bonnie Doon. ‘Craig Marc Dermott’ as Michael Holding would say - what a legend
Just understand that the air moves faster across a smooth surface than a rough one. So it creates pressure and moves the ball in to the side that is rough
Wrist position is very important, keep it all the way back and bring it in while release. Also, make sure you generate lot of force from your hips by rotating them before you swing your arm. Practice and then attend to finger positions on the ball.
When I was Kid watching McDermott Bowling coming for Run-Up was so Scary...on Television Set... Wonder what's Going on Actual Batsmen facing Him ;-) Haha :-)
I have watched videos all over. One thing that they dont tell is, how to identify which side of the ball will wear quick. When the ball is new it is shiny on both sides. What is the trick/technique to identify which side to shine
Only thing I question is the difference in follow-through for inswing vs outswing. I play club third 11 standard and swing the ball big (not at any real pace), main problem I have is that my outswingers have become much better in recent years (used to only swing it in) but I'm now less confident in my inswing. If it's going I don't bowl an inswinger very often as it tends to drift down leg, so if my right arm follows through to finish by my right leg surely this will just take it further down legside? Good video though.
In view of events last year, I had to smile around 4.14 when he starts talking about the scuffed up side of the ball....er maybe it got hit into the car park (not spoken: where yer mukka is waiting with a sheet of coarse grade)!
Great video. He explained everything so nicely and quietly , definitely not like the others, as they seem to be in a hurry.

Helps McDermott was one of the better pace bowlers of the previous era let alone his current coaching credentials.

Tavjot Singh when you have a new ball and both sides are shiny how do you figure out which one is shinier one

thanks to teach me how to inswing and outswing....
I've heard sandpaper works well to scuff up the ball nicely..
Yeah, bowlers spikes and the other wickets on the square are great tools
I've heard dust works well to produce swing off an old ball
Mac a was a fine bowler, a ferociously competitive ,man.
yes, occasionally.

A bit of sandpaper always helps too.

Do you ever wonder what grit they used? I do wonder how much thought they put into that.
OK thanks for your great explanation
Thank you sir.. 👌👌

Legend. Should have played longer. There was cricket left in him for sure.
Hardly a legend. 28 average is very good but the legends are McGrath, Ambrose, Donald, Hadlee etc.

0:43 actually the ball swings TOWARDS the shiny side right? Did he get it wrong there? Please correct me if i am wrong.
Nope it's the rough side which should face the direction you want to swing
Hey,when I grab the ball and follow the grip I got www1w0
❤love this🎉
Thanks Craig
Craig McDermott one of Australia's best bowlers. Shame he finished on 291 Wickets would have preferred him to be in the 300 Club.
Come on ! He was very good but not outstanding.
