You know, i was just watching a video called, "Independent Artists: How To Promote Your Music" because i am an independent artist. The guy in the video was showing the cam all the rejected CDs he received by post, and i just happened to see a Cool Badge - Dear Reader CD on top of the pile and i thought, "Let's checkout this band". That's what brought me to this Dear Reader music channel.
You know, i was just checking out that video you mentioned and found "Chris Cornell - Scream" on a CD in that pile. Which is what i'm listening to now. Great stuff. And i love Cherilyn's Music.
My take on the meaning of this video is that it's about being toxic. Everyone can exerise a certain amount of toxic behaviour and most often people who are toxic aren't bad people. They are just dealing with their own fears and traumas which they (unintentionally) bring with them into a relationship. But simultaneously feeding this kind of "poison" with love may eventually weigh our partner down and cause the relationship to... die.
I finally found it!!! I think was about 5 or 4 years old when my dad watched this to me, I'm not sure why but that's all I could remember. For years and years i though it was a dream or something so I kept brushing it off. Recently it kept on popping up in my mind so I began searching. For some reason I thought it was ladybird and not a spider so maybe that's the reason why I couldn't find but thank god I finally found it.
I think this is one of the most beautifully tragic songs and videos. The desperation of being accepted and to be loved and fighting for that small shred of hope. The red shoes are the light that brings colour to their dull and grey lives-- for both the man and the spider. At the end of their adventure where the camera pans out and shows you all the suitcases of those before him, I get the feeling that that is the number of times her light has gone out and so she waits for her "loop" (that's the only way i can describe it) to begin once more. OR, maybe she is stuck in a cycle and that is how many times she has "killed" the one she loved until he left or actually died.
I remembered this song from the time I heard and saw it when I was 11 years old ...and i've been looking for it today ....Just something about it struck me 7 years ago and today I was feeling a bit nostalgic and some parts of the song popped up in my head and I just had to look for it...Glad I found it
People say that she tried to kill him but I think that the spider is representing a widow maker. The color red is the only color you see bad that is that color on a black widow. In the end she puts her head on him so it shows that she did care about him. I think it is more of a curse she has, over her just killing salesmen. Kisses represent love so I think as soon as you fall In love with her, you die.
The story is actually about the spider who is unable to keep someone in her life. She is use to being on the run it seems but she doesn't kiss and kill him intentionally his love for her distracts her from what she is and she forgets and goes with her feelings.
Dear dear Reader, i love your Music!!! It Touches me everytime i Listen to it!!! I just heard the Song cherylin was singing for "zeit der helden", and i love it! I BEG you to publish it soon because it think i really Fell in Love with this Song!!!!
@milfoc The boxes of shoes have a metaphorical meaning towards the malicious nature of love , it symbolizes how throughout her life , she has gone through many , many men , all have been subject and killed by her poisonous kiss, and to what extent of pain will she have to endure to finally find love. It's a very powerful message.
She's a black widow spider. Black widow. I think that's why she's a spider. Also I think those men chasing them were fate or maybe it representing time was running out. Their relationship was never meant to last and that's why this song is so bittersweet. I had to buy it even though it makes me really sad (I find all the music on my itunes is sad) because it is amazing. More people should know about it.
Really Touching song, Can be related with , true love no matter how or what anyone says , he chose to do what he loves , not what others tell him , and it is also relatable in the spiders sense that she fits in no where she goes , yet she still does what she has to do to maintain a relationship between the two ! ... either way you look at it , very powerful
I found out about this song through Sizzlebird's remix. I never fully understood it until I listened to the lyrics without simultaneously thinking about the video. They're both (separate) metaphors for the things we bring into a relationship, maybe beyond our control, that hurt our partner. In the video it's the spider's venom, and in the song its the girl's father. I think I also understand the name. At the beginning of the song, we're lead to consider the lyrics "climbed into the belly of the Great White Bear" with the logic we'd apply to a children's book, and expect the suitor to hide inside and later emerge unharmed. At first, it's a sanctuary. But the suitor is dead by the end of the song, and the listener realizes this was a flash forward as we recount the events that lead to this terrible state. It seems too callous an interpretation, but it may just be that a polar bear happens upon his corpse and eats it. "No one will look for him there," not because it's a good hiding place, but because they aren't looking. Picking his thoughts and making them clear is post-mortem self-reflection. I think the "Great White Bear" is the state our partner is left in after the fallout of a doomed relationship.
Yes, that does make a lot more sense, but if you look closely, in the scene where he dies, the camera zooms out into a room full of other shoe handbags. It all leads to the thought that she has already done the same thing to other sellers, he wasn't the first one. This spider seems to have a funny hobby D:
He climbed into the belly of the great white bear It's very sticky and it smells a little fishy But no one will look for him there He took a moment to pick his thoughts and make them clear Oh, what a day it's been Oh, what a terrible state he's in Oh, what a day it's been Oh, what a terrible state he's in Her eyes are wired there's a hat over her thick black hair They're racing through the snow Their sweaty hands keep slipping But they're almost there Her father's shotgun ringing out now through the cold night air Oh, what a fix they're in Oh, what a terrible sin Oh, what a fix they're in Oh, what a terrible sinister game The hunter did play To give them the hope That they could get away When biding his time He did wait down the line To bring a disaster On their youthful dreams of escape Oh, what a day its been Oh, what a day its been Run! there's a bullet in your back Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back But I wouldn't take it back Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back But I wouldn't take it back Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back But I wouldn't take it back, I wouldn't take it back Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back and I want to take it back I want to, want to I want to, want you I want you, want you I want you, want you, want you, want you Back
@lionnieS i think about it in the same way. maybe he was the first one she really loved but as she's a poisonous spider killing him was unavoidable. so sad, so extremely beautiful!
Could it be that she, the spider, symbolize his job as a sales man, that he actually never met her? When he sells the shoes to her, it symbolizes what he hopes to get from his poisonous job. Back at the bar, the men, as xwavestr said, wanted to help him because they saw that he was in a bad shape and were depressed not achieving what he hoped to. But he refused to listen, and refused to let them help him. And in the end the job killed him. That's my interpretation of the song.
it simbolises that she opend her door for him when no one else would then he fell inlove with her but her love is like poison to him so he fought for her but at th end his love for her killed him
I think (its already been said also) that may be its not like "her dark passenger" but more like the poison in her kiss, it might he just inevitable for her...
i don't think she intentionally killed him. there's really nothing to suggest those intentions. and look at the way her head dropped when he died. she was sad/remorseful. I think the man and spider "had the hope that they could get away" from fate, which destined them to fail. I think the song deals more with the realization that, despite all their love, things could never actually last. ..just a thought, but I think it might make a little more sense.
yes, hence my comment about how they were fated to fail. like all the other men she fell in love with (& killed), her relationship with the man in the video was destined to end poorly. when i stated that the couple was fated to fail, i assumed it was understood that it was because she was a danger to men, somehow- that something within her prevented her from successfully maintaining a loving relationship. i should have clarified that the first time.
Song is Great..but the video....the video now is OUTA THIS WORLD. Like when you watch it the second time u realise that those dude in "The Great White Bear" just wanted to help a brother out. Love is like that at times. you get so tangled up in it you don't notice that it's gonna kill and the worst thing that could ever happen to you.
@lionnieS yeah but... it also shows you at the end a lot of others briefcases of people who she has killed!.. maybe the other persons were trying to protect him xD
I think it has to do with her(the spider) not having any interaction with the outside world, being shunned in a sense, therefore only meets desperate salesman, who are willing to look past the obvious. He obviously falls in love with her, despite onlookers opinions. The fact that she ends up killing them/him, I'm not too sure of yet, maybe because love is fleeting or something like that. whatever, it's a great song.
11 Years later, and this is still one of my favourite songs/music videos.
You know, i was just watching a video called, "Independent Artists: How To Promote Your Music" because i am an independent artist. One of the most incredible music videos ever made. The twist is heart breaking
Even though the poor man died at the end at least he knew what it was like to love and to be loved... More than I can say for myself.
all you need to do is love yourself because you're a beautiful creation. Then you can be in a position to be loved and to love in turn. Never give up
Hey I’ll drain your blood bro

I'm so amazed that you've had the chance to hear this music when you were 11. And also that you've found the song again.

Gave me goosebumps...pure beauty!
this song is the definition of love.
The story is actually about the spider who is unable to keep someone in her life. She is use to being on the run it seems but she doesn't kiss and kill him intentionally his love for her distracts her from what she is and she forgets and goes with her feelings.

I think it's a shame that only a few people have heard and seen this video :(

So beautiful and oh so sad.
Wow, this video is so touching...
brilll vid and tune !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He climbed into the belly of the great white bear
It's very sticky and it smells a little fishy
But no one will look for him there
He took a moment to pick his thoughts and make them clear
Oh, what a day it's been
Oh, what a terrible state he's in
Oh, what a day it's been
Oh, what a terrible state he's in
Her eyes are wired there's a hat over her thick black hair
They're racing through the snow
Their sweaty hands keep slipping
But they're almost there
Her father's shotgun ringing out now through the cold night air
Oh, what a fix they're in
Oh, what a terrible sin
Oh, what a fix they're in
Oh, what a terrible sinister game
The hunter did play
To give them the hope
That they could get away
When biding his time
He did wait down the line
To bring a disaster
On their youthful dreams of escape
Oh, what a day its been
Oh, what a day its been
Run! there's a bullet in your back
Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back
Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back
But I wouldn't take it back
Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back
But I wouldn't take it back
Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back
But I wouldn't take it back, I wouldn't take it back
Run! Run! Run! there's a bullet in your back
and I want to take it back
I want to, want to
I want to, want you
I want you, want you
I want you, want you, want you, want you
Back

glad to have stumbled upon this song,
As Augustus Waters would say, "I'm a big fan of metaphor"
how can someone dislike this ? it makes me feel so sad
Oh so sweet
@lionnieS
Ur right... some people just hurt others unwilingly. Like when u have addictions to drugs and alcohol.
Professor I love you! this is me right now, I miss you( well except for the end)
it simbolises that she opend her door for him when no one else would
then he fell inlove with her

Love is blind. (even if others warn you from the obvious threat, you go for it anyway)
dude she kills all the doorsalesmen. did you not see all the breif cases at the end? but she did like him, it was just how things worked.
