that is the wonderful way to put it not just because I completely agree :)....like 98 just as example a band that couldn't help but not mesmerize on small show like sessions on west 54th street in a year in which they played yet another incredible festival like the Lemonwheel. All while having that run from island shows through my favorite summer gorge, prague, portland meadows, shoreline, that acoustic set :), playing terrapin finally virginia beach, and in fall my favorite show for entertainment and great music the wipeout show in Worcester along with countless I haven't mentioned. So many phases of sonic curiosity by this point you could and would hear pieces of it all in a single show. As a miles fan reminds me of his passing through and absorbing all elements of his craft from blues, swing, bebop, going to europe finding his sound scoring a film, creating modal jazz with gil, avant guard, fusion al be it later as phish did with bluegrass, funk, spacey soundscapes/ambient sound, orchestral, theatrical, rock, jazz, zappa' touch, and I do believe their halloween shows helped firmly they were never the same after remain in the light imo such an incredible sound and style and so funky. Phish between 90-2000 reminds me of Miles decade with 56-66 roughly. A bebop quintet playing relaxin, workin', cookin', to a new sound in kind of blue. Coltrane leaves Wayne shorter and younger quintet of 60's playing miles in sky and at an incredible level leading into bitches brew and in a silent way he'd mastered it all . Both bands in very different times and ways refined their lines and music to something so lyrical and immediately recognizable. Like you refined all that into 2 sentences for everyones benefit. :) ✌
@@jjmah7 that’s mostly who was there back then. The band has almost no fan base outside the us. They couldn’t book many large places on just the hope fans would travel europe with them.
Ikr! I know it's Germany, but it's hard for me to fathom that there were so few people in the audience THEN, in 1997! Phish had crowds bigger than this in 1990 for God's sake 😂
My favorite single-set Phish show. In terms of tightness and cohesion, this is pretty much as good as they got at that time. There isn’t any type-II journeys, but that’s not always necessary.
seeing shows on that fn massive tour when they got back, its hard to believe this was the same year. god i wish id had the money to follow to europe, theres no one there!!😮 *edit: every now and then 25yrs later i catch myself listenin to new phish or gf, goose🙄, there's NOTHING that will ever be as good as 93-98 phish, nothing... so glad i was there in that tiny little moment of absolute brilliance😮❤
For sure everything gets better with age I cant wait to see them on tour such a joy it brings in my life.S ome chase money some chase fame I chase freedom and that's what phish gives me at every show.
Maybe this will be the venues of the Phuture to satisfy social distancing. I can dream of that much free space around me with a lot of people who don’t even know who Phish is [was]. Beautiful and solid playing too. I am stoked for a 97 phish DAAM installment next. Phish 97 was the bees knees. And that’s the year they used for Bittersweet Motel. Wawaweeewa!
It’s so crazy seeing such a relatively small crowd. Brad Sands said in an interview that they always lost money when they went to Europe, but it was just accepted as a cost of trying spread the band to wider audiences. Also, most European shows they did were just American fans who followed them to Europe.
Fun fact: Trey played on Gimme some lovin later this year with Winwood in Burlington. Also, Trey and Paige sat in with Panic in 93 at the Roxy in LA for a ridiculous Low Spark (Winwood). Wonder what caused him to not come out? Although he didn't write it I always loved Phish's take on Traffic's light up or leave me alone on the early tapes I had. Saw a bunch of shows from 94-99 and was blessed with the bust out on 12/30/99 - 1st in 10 years and on what turned out to be my final run. That was a really fun new years, even though I had to sacrifice DDBB with Panic
Fishman on the dw...kit i m guessing, same drum kit at Clifford ball. 2many young jambands want to b like these guys/phish, not realizing how much work and creativity and weirdness/awsome ness...these 4 have. wow, what a treat! not that a big of a crowd for rockaplast? how can they play water in the sky for the second song? they brought so much energy opening with taste and then went into a super slow quiet song with no energy???
2:57 this is why I set my mic up at an angle where I can still see my frets while singing. I don’t get why Trey always has his mic parallel with the stage.
Eric B. A mic pointing up at a 45 allows you to sing while still looking down at your frets. A mic parallel w the stage requires you to be looking out at the crowd rather than down at your frets
Eric B. Haha! That is the goal. I always have to look at my frets. Some players don’t and I always wonder how. I have seen it mess Trey up on a couple of occasions.

I hate certain "professionals" who work in video editing, who don't respect musicians and what's happening on stage. You can't appreciate the guitar solos because whoever did the editing shouldn't like guitarists and because of that, the images are jumping between the other musicians and the audience .... and damn who is going to watch the video. No band worked harder in the 90’s than these guys and these late 90’s shows show it. One of tightest bands on earth.

These European shows are underrated as far 1997 goes. Definitely hugely instrumental in the shift from machine gun phish to jam alarm phish
For my birthday in the year 2000 we carved pumpkins and watched this show on VHS tape. It's still special.
