Training with Maui, Hi 5, Touch and Colours!

- We captured a quick evening training session with Maui our Green Wing Macaw. Re-inforcing some tricks he has already learnt and starting to teach him two colours and also to show his wings. We still need more practice, but he's getting there.

My Bernie does his wings, I tell him ‘jazz hands’ and he. Spreads his wings out.

@@MacawTakeover repetitions, I would hold my hands up and flap my hands about and tell him jazz hands. He eventually just did it when I asked for jazz hands.

Great idea to use a target to teach him colors, I have never thought of doing that! Just make sure you don't mix up the cues. Your rollover cue is very similar to spin and you also hold the stick when cueing other tricks. This might confuse him as he could not be sure what you want from him. The other thing I have noticed is that when you present the target stick, you hold it down and he is touching the middle of the stick. Try holding it in the way that he has to reach upwards to touch it and that he can touch only the end of it. But aside from these minor things you are both doing an incredible job learning new tricks, I am really happy for you!
Hi, thanks for your feedback. I was kinda rushing as I was filming by myself.. we normally do everyone a lot slower and not jump around to different tricks too quickly. We appreciate the advice!

Love the training videos and the shorts, absolutely hilarious. We've currently got a blue and gold baby that we adopted privately and have just put a deposit down for a green wing baby girl for a companion. Our blue and gold is a mad man but very lovable, I'm hoping the green wing ends up being a little less mad 😂
Thank you for the feedback. However… you may find that your Green Wing is an absolute nutter! We will be really interested to hear how you find your girl compared to you Blue and Gold. Maui is simply full on crazy and very intelligent, like most Macaws. We have our hands full for sure and he has taken control of everything. I just had a “memory” flash up on my phone… it’s all photos and videos of Maui taken in a single month! He wins. I’ll share soon.
@@MacawTakeover I have the same, my phone is full of photos and videos of him doing silly things. Unfortunately because of how naughty he can be destroying some things his favourite words at the moment are No and stop it and then he'll squeal and go upside down and be completely adorable. It truly is like having a baby with mood swings.
Haha sounds just like Maui. Except his favourite word is Hello… which he says every time he sees a mirror! 😂
The very first time you tried to teach him a high five or a spin so Maui knew what you wanted him to do what did you do to show him? Was it just as simple as holding your hand up for the high five and spinning around yourself to show him to spin?
With the spin, we led him round in a circle while holding one of his treat nuts and saying “spin”. He got it after a few goes. He now does it with just a hand signal.
With hi-5, he naturally holds his door up when he wants you to pick him up. So we just said the word “hi-5”, tapes his foot and have him a treat. He picked it up quickly
