Nope. Not at all. That's all most Dumble designs are. A slightly tweaked Fender clean channel with a mid hump y clipping circuit w/clean blend control. That's exactly how the ODS works

So many ways to solve this. One really can’t go wrong with (David) Barber’s Gain Changer or Direct Drive. I know you also have access to an older Burn Unit and use the 5ww Buss. Any of those can get a mid hump. ALL of Barber’s pedals have such good note definition - resembling a clean blend.
Sparkle Drive could use some more love too. I use the Archer for Klon stuff and run the drive between 9 and noon. It’s very good on a Deluxe or Princeton.

The Conerstone Imperium with the Antiquity and Gladio is my latest favorite.

It immediately fixed the ice picky character that I can’t stand about modeling. I think I would totally reconsider those units with something in front to round them off.

What's crazy is that I play a Tele through a UA Ruby, and thus don't like Tubescreamers.
I only love them when I hear them with a Strat though a high headroom Fender type amp and I don't own a Strat nor a Fender amp, that is I can only appreciate TSs when I hear other people play 😅

You nailed it. It’s so weird. I have a strat and a fender and a tubescreamer and try often to make it sound like the great guitarist that use them and eventually go back to my tele custom with humbuckers into my plexi with a WarmDrive (Zendrive clone) and enjoy the heavenly bliss of tone. To each his own.

Fwiw, the Origin Effects Halcyon Green and the Browne Gritador are the only Tube Screamer-esque pedals I like.

My absolute favorite Tubescreamer derived pedal incorporates something else Dumble ODS-style amps are known for: I have a VHE Pale Horse pedal, and the reason I love it is that it has the best dynamic control of any TS style pedal I've ever owned. It also has the things the VHE horse series and others are known for: taking a fave circuit and adding a lot of extra controls/options in a standard sized analogue pedal. In the case of the Pale Horse, three different clipping type switch, high and low cut trims added to the usual volume tone gain on top, plus I believe a couple of mini pots inside that I've never futzed with.
VHE also had The Scream which was definitley more strandard TS, but the PH just reacts to volume control and picking dynamics so beautifully. And though Peter has largely scaled down the company, every now and then new batches of pedals get made in support of another project; and he has the plans available online of what used to be his line of wares to make your own.

While I do no longer use this (the Dumble profiles/captures available for Tonex and Kemper, and the Grammatico GSG in the Helix/HX get far closer to that sound), while still using real amps (mainly Twin-like ones) I found that TS-like pedals with a mix/dry/blend control like the Halcyon Green or the JHS Moonshine get closest.

Boss SD-1 is a great tubescreamer ‘adjacent’ pedal.
Supposedly very similar in design but they sound remarkably different.
Tube screamers with humbuckers sound way too muddy but with an SD-1 🧑‍🍳 💋

Great tone! I think timeline does not completly add up. I’ve always thought HAD heard him play with Jimmy Whitherspoon early to mid seventies and first Tube Screamer was released ’79. Robben also played big archtops then (L5 and Super400).

Still love my Ibanez metal screamer, cheers to you for turning me on to it. Would be cool to hear you do a direct comparison with the Browne Atom…

Maybe problem with a pleasant tubescreamer sound for the player isn't the tubescreamer but the amp -- e.g., a Fender Twin is gonna retain more bass hence will not cut out all the bass when the tubescreamer is engaged?

You should try a Milos Popovich Germanium Gainiac (2 stage). I had a fellow guitarist try mine and we got epic SRV in-the-face tone but you can also boost amp-gain on the heavier side as well.

I love this sound, but don't care to spend much getting it, nor do I think one needs to... but that might be becuase it's just a sound I enjoy, not one I usually seek out. I go more for alterntive rock lead distortion tones. So more gain than this, but not like heavy rock necessarily

This video is very timely for me. I've been struggling to find a pedal that distorts the front edge of the note on the attack but without a big mid hump, or at least an active 3 band eq. I was thinking The J Rocket Dude, but it sounds pretty elevated in the mids. What would you suggest I consider trying?
Thank you for the entertaining and educational content!

A Blues Breaker style or even a Klon style pedal would be less mid humpy than a Dude.

@@davidfaustino4476 thanks for the recommendation. I have a BB style but not the Klon style. The BB style doesn't break up the way I'm describing (front edge of the note.) the Klon demos don't seem to do that either
