BUCKETLIST FOOTBALL! I head south of the border to see Carlisle United vs. Bristol Rovers.

- Carlisle United is the closest English football club from the Paisley/Glasgow area, and is just a one hour journey south by Avanti West Coast. Carlisle United had been on my football bucket list for years, but would it be worth the wait? Carlisle United vs. Bristol Rovers was not destined to be a goal fest. #carlisleunited

I've also considered getting the train down from Glasgow for a Carlisle game! I've heard the terracing is the biggest old school terracing left in the UK
That was fantastic Scott, so entertaining (despite the result). There is something so pure about lower league football that you just don't get in the top leagues anymore. It's almost like going back in time, but in a good way. Cheers for taking us along with you!
Glad you liked it. While in Berlin I'll be visiting a Berlin League match (German 6th tier of football) dont expect pies and Bovril at half time but maybe beer and bratwurst.
League 1 is far better than the cinch Scottish premiership. As usual always disrespecting things stevie boy.
@@PlanesTrainsEverything haha amazing mate, look forward to it!
@@ucebr924I don’t watch Scottish premiership so I’ve no idea what you’re talking about
@@PlanesTrainsEverything I remember a Jasper Carrot story about him and a friend at Old Trafford. Jasper trying to sail under the radar to avoid the hooligans, when his mate yells at him from the front of the concession stall in a broad brummie accent "EH, CARROT THEYVE GOT NO COWIN BOVRIL". Must have heard that 40 years ago, still makes me chuckle
Excellent vid! I went to Carlisle a few weeks ago to tick Brunton Park off the list. They were playing Leyton Orient and, just like against Bristol Rovers, they lost 0-1. But despite a poor game I loved my visit. The ground is a wonderful old style stadium (I hope the Amercans won't ruin it) and the fans are passionate and knowledgeable. The city of Carlisle is a great place too, one of England's unsung gems!
An absolutely immaculate 2 minutes silence. A credit to everyone at the ground.
I lived in Carlisle in 1978, it looked different than what I remember of it.
I was thinking of going to watch Carlisle on the 23rd of December at home. Taking the Leeds to Carlisle scenic route funnily enough. This has tempted me!
You’re a good man Scott, as a Millwall fan many unsuccessful trips to Carlisle back in the .. yes the 90’s. Since had many a pleasurable business trips to Carlisle, like the city very much. Keep it going pal
Great video Scott, as a fellow transport, travel and football lover I’d love to see more videos like this.
Spend many a weekday evening/Saturday travelling to random 8th tier English football stadiums myself!
One of my favourite things to do whilst living in England was to go to the lower division grounds, great day out
When I was young, my father take me to Ajax (Amsterdam) whit Cruyff, I never forget 't.. Enjoy your day and Football ⚽🤗
That was different Scott and a delight to watch. Coming from the very south of England Carlisle is the furthest away game for my team, Portsmouth. I have managed to get there twice, 32 years between the 2 visits!!! We are due to play there again in February but I don't think we'll be able to make it due to health issues.
Carlisle were briefly top of the league in the 73-74 season, winning their first three games, including a victory against Spurs. I remember seeing them on Match of the Day, including a sweeping view of the Lakeland fells. They finished the season bottom and were relegated.
74-75.
@@Dantianblue Apologies. 74-75 was the era of my first girlfriend, so football wasn't a priority.
@@borderlands6606 😀👍
Superb snapshot of life in 2023. So often the ordinary is not recorded.
Enjoyed that video Scott, England is a bit more relaxed when it comes to alcohol it seems 😂 keep up the good work!
Just a quick word to say thanks.
Yours and Steve Marsh videos are superb and really cheer me up.
👍👍
Knew there was a reason why I subscribed to this channel. Big Carlisle United fan!!!!
as a resident of Carlisle I can confirm we get a lot of scottish visitors all the time, mostly from Dumfries. as such scottish notes are super common here, you really do not need to bother getting english notes lol
More Scottish football complete with your opinion on the pies - a necessary part of the Scottish game I'm led to believe!
I was a steward at chesterfield FC for many years. Watching this really makes me want to go back to it. I love my football
You've probably met some of the Belgian fans of Chesterfield FC, they're based around one of the bars I go to. Belgian football fans who decided to support an English National Leage team so they could support a team together...
@@barvdw I moved away from Chesterfield a few years ago and not been a steward for about 15 years. I'm so tempted to go back now
This is EXACTLY my sort of content! There seems to be a big overlap between those interested in football (not hooligan tw@s, but groundhopper sorts!) and those with a penchant for transport and travel!
I love all your work, yr so funny and full of facts. There an ideal watch with lots of different topics. Keep it up Scott👏👏
Nice video as always. I’ve been to loads of Carlisle games in recent years, either driving or preferably a quick hour on the Avanti from Motherwell. They probably do have a similar or even higher average home support than both St Mirren or Motherwell as the crowds are not usually boosted by large away supports. Scottish notes are never a problem at Carlisle as many Scottish fans regularly attend matches or even just travel down for the day. Ps, thanks for the Motherwell reference, I understand theres a slight rivalry there which perhaps dates back to certain cup game in 1977 which I also attended. Also, away fans do occupy part of the Pioneer stand. Good luck with all your future travels. 👍
Great to see you taking in a football game again Scott. Totally agree about watching any level of football.
Good lad supporting your local team scott st mirren one of my favourite away days Killie fan! Carlisle utd is a great ground and it's a great city too handy from killie as well haha another great video! 👍
awesome stuff! im from Carlisle. loved every minute of this video, brilliant
That vlog made a pleasant change. Thx
Love this content. Would you consider doing a video from St Mirren? I love going to watch Scottish football and I live in the West Midlands. Xx
Ngl I love the change of content I would love to see more of these kind of video's
Wow…not even a minute and already with the Motherwell FC jokes 😂
Great video to watch especially as I love trains & I'm a Carlisle fan. 👍
Really enjoyed this vlog, a pleasant departure from your usual equal quality
I went to a Kilmarnock game, maybe 10 yesrs ago. And they had a bar in the stadium but you could not take a drink to your seat in the stand. You could even watch the game from the bar.
Great video Scott. I would love to see some more football videos.
It was very unfortunate that the only goal was scores by Carlisle, but at the wrong end.
You mentioned that Carlisle were the better team too, so really hope their fortunes improve. Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Glad to see their was no violence after the match too. You do know you have to do a Motherwell match now 😊
Love these kind of videos Scott 🌟
Been a subscriber for a long while Scott. Really glad you came to see my team from home.you will have to try a Union Berlin game over here in Berlin if you can.
Nice video Scott. Keep up the good work.
coll concept. I like being the idea of being a casual just turning up
"Do you have any bottles or cans ?"- No- " do you want some !" 😁
Very enjoyable vlog Scott. Been to Carlisle a few times very friendly wee town. Didn’t know you were a Buddies fan, met some fans at Windsor Park when they played my local team Linfield in a friendly last year, all decent guys. Keep up the great work.
That was a cool video Scott. It's been many years since I last went to Brunton Park and the ground looks a lot tidier now than it did back then.
What a great video… giving my hubby ideas for our upcoming trip to the UK… 😂 just in case we can fit a game in… although we’re hoping for a St Mirren game 😊
There is no problem using Scottish notes in Carlisle. Theu used to have Clydesdale banks there. We often go there for a Christmas shopping trip and a wee visit to the Gret a Outlet Village and can use our Age Consession cards to get there on the local buses.
Caerliwelydd is Carlisle in Welsh. Cumbrian farmers used to count their sheep "un, dau, tri, pedwar, pump "🐑
Nice one. More footie trips, please!
Great video Scott . I am planning to go north from Staffordshire to Bonnyrigg . Never been to Scotland , never seen the Rose play . On the bucket list . All the best
I was there as a Rovers fan Scott, i'm an early subscriber too, cool to see you've seen my team play!
Oh a midweek video! Excellent
Great choice of eatery… the Lounge chain is nice, and every branch has a unique name related to the local area.
Carlisle is a fantastic city, so underrated.
I used to live in Newcastle and went to a couple of Carlisle games… both 0-0 so visiting neutrals must be a bad luck charm. (One match was against Brighton when Zamora was the most prolific striker in the country… trust me to bring his goal scoring run to an end!)
Long away fixtures are the best! I went to Carlisle few years back when Everton played there in FA cup
I'm from Motherwell and I'd watch anyone but Motherwell
Great blog again scott👌
Come on the Ton 😂😂😂
I've done Carlisle away once. Made a long weekend of it, getting there via Newcastle on the Friday, going to the game on Saturday (goalless draw), visiting Penrith, Brougham Castle and Mayburgh Henge on the Sunday and returning home, via Manchester, on Monday. That was a decent weekend. The hotel i stayed had a good breakfast buffet, there was an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet down the road and there were plenty of pubs plus other places worth visiting.
Rovers fan here, myself and a group of mates were at the game as well as 600 other hardy Bristolians making the trip up (and a few Scottish Rovers fans making the trip down)
Lovely town Carlisle; fully enjoyed the visit and in full agreement Carlisle were the better side on the day. So were delighted to leave with all the points.
Excellent video Scott you certainly should do more football vlogs- Fort William next ?
My West Ham hero, and favourite Scotsman came from St Mirren.. Frank McAvennie.
Very good player. What was that other guy called at West Ham, McAvennie's striking partner? What a strike force they were.
@@Arthur.in.the.Fridge Tony Cottee.
Great vlog as usual young man.only beer I've ever had at footy was Wembley when man City played Watford in fa cup final.dont ask the price but 3 pints involved 2 notes one being a 20
Visited Carlisle few times nice place
Hi Scott you don’t have to order via a code to get food in Lounges group chain. They are more accessible / friendlier than another chain beginning with W.
I intend next season to go north of the border to watch a few games! I’m a groundhopper in the west midlands of England averaging around 100 games a season but I’ve not been to any Scottish games as of yet!
Been a subscriber for a long time Scott as love the travel myself but often the reason I travel is for football. Done all the 42 Scottish League grounds and 90 of the current 92 in England. Living in the North East, Carlisle has been a regular haunt over the years particularly when they have played my team, Sunderland. I also live in the Tyne valley so Carlisle is under and hour from me by train or car and its a great little city as people have said. I would watch more of the football stuff but love the travel stuff. Been to St Mirren twice, first time was a 0-0 draw v Hibs and the 2nd time was a pre season friendly v Sunderland which I won't embarass you with the score!!
Those old style floodlight pylons at Brunton Park are great!
Nice video Scott
I went to Carlisle v AFC Barrow back in 2021. The Cumbrian derby although miles apart. Finished 0-0 but enjoyed experience. Carlisle were second bottom of the 4th tier at the time. Won promotion the following season.
yeah & beat Barrow 1-0 away & 5-1 Home.... Barrow going well just now.. & a bit of a transition at Carlisle with New owners & forthcoming strengthening of the team....
I don’t think it’s an unhealthy obsession; back in 2013 as a USA fan I had the absolute pleasure of going to Hamden Park, and for a nightcap my buddy and I were talking to two people from the tartan army. Both members were Aberdeen fans and told us that in 1981 there was a major issue with the old firm where horses were galloping at full speed to separate the hooligans. That was the moment the S FA banned alcohol from the stands.
The alcohol thing is very bizarre. My local team shares its stadium with a rugby league team. You can't drink at your seat for the football but you can when the rugby is on. Given one sport is played in winter and the other in summer, it is often the same person either drinking or not drinking.
In England? Rugby and football both start in late summer and finish in mid spring, as far as I’m aware.
But, yeah, unfortunately the minority of football fans spoil it for the majority.
@@ZomersetRugby League is a summer sport in England. Rugby Union is what you're thinking of :)
@@Whitty321 aaaahhhhh, yes, you’re right….I was thinking of Union. Makes sense now :) cheers
I used to go to see Deveronvale in Banff a few times. I've also been to celtic park a couple of times and noted no alcohol. Which is a lot better I feel as you don't get the gatherings trying to get to the loo as you do in England. I haven't been down to my own club Spurs for a while as flights from aberdeen are expensive and there is no saturday late flight from london to aberdeen.
I went there a few times with Stockport. Shame they shut the away terrace, always a scenic trip up the M6 and made a nice change from heading towards Birmingham.
I go to every home game love Brunton Park
Totally different video Scott but I really enjoyed it
Alcohol outside and inside the stadium, probably why there are so many Scottish fans. And always fun to hear some friendly shit-talking about other Scottish teams :p
I just watched an 11 minute video about football, how did that happen? 🤔..... Scott you're Da Man 😻👍
Love my football too and will happily go to any level of the game.
Would recommend a trip to my neck of the woods to a local team i sometimes watch called Atherton Colleries, a non league team who play in the same colours as your team, St Mirren.
Being a non league side you can have a pint by the side of the pitch which is allowed in non league, makes for a good day out
As you probably know, it's due to Hillsborough that you can pretty much just walk straight on to the pitch at all English football grounds...you'll probably get rugby tackled pretty quickly if you do without good reason though!
Several Football Manager editions ago I tried to do a road to glory save with Carlisle United - I couldn't crack the championship due to the board being tight 🙃Attending a Carlisle game is on my bucket list as well
To see some football is a good excuse to travel. I have handwritten notes of my travels over the years, and for my 1986 trip from the USA (NY City area) and using a rental car in England, Wales & Scotland, I have confirmed that I have been in the Castle in town. I also noted the accent of locals close to Scottish. It is near the border where the Romans didn't dare go any farther due to fierceness of the Scots (even today !).
If you tagged that onto your train video to Carlisle, I salute you, Sir!
need to try sheffield wednesday that a treck from glasgow i do ha
Hi Scott. Ive been enjoying your videos for a while, but i just wanted to share a little story with you. I'm a Brit living in The Woodlands, Texas. My good buddy, Donald is a St. Mirren fan from Paisly. What are the chances? So now, St. Mirren are my Scottish choice and the mighty Bradford City is his English team. Keep up the good work Scott. Really enjoy watching your stuff.
You should make the trip when Carlisle play Notts County or Grimsby
You must be a Groundhoppers Scott, watching football in many different stadiums. Would have loved to have visited love street, bet you spent many seasons there watching st Mirren!
Only been once to Carlisle, quite a few years ago, they were playing my team Colchester United, rather than take the coach up, a bunch of us flew from Stansted to Glasgow, hired a minibus, stayed overnight in Ayr and travelled down to Carlisle, then flew back, good thing we didn’t stay the extra day as there was a snowstorm. One day I will revisit and stay local for the weekend and explore Carlisle.
Come to a real ground Cappielow park Scott instead of that mini Lego place that your team plays in😅😅. Videos are great keep up the good work Cmon you Ton.
How about you take us on a train ride, to take in a Dundee United game. Me being a Brisbane 76 year old lad, whose dad was born in Dundee.
It doesn't matter much who they are playing but I'd love to get a feel of the atmosphere. If the visitors came second, that's an added bonus.
Quite some years ago they top dressed the pitch with sand for more evenness. The grass didn't grow back as quick as they would have liked,
and it was a very sandy pitch at the start of the season. Visitors dubbed the home fans as the Arabs. All in good humour and was accepted!
Scott, I really wish I had known you were down for this. Don't worry about the Scottish money, it's well accepted down here, after all Scotland is only a few miles from the border and is a main shopping hub for the folks just over the border. Indeed Carlisle does not appear in the Doomsday Book as when it was written Carlisle was ruled by the Scots and has been ruled longer by them than the English.
United have just been bought by and American and changes are already in the pipeline
If your down again give me a shout I'll show you around.
See you on the Train hopefully sometime soon.
Take us to a St Mirren game. I believe Irish international Jamie McGrath used to play for you
He did. I think he plays with Aberdeen now but I may be wrong. Probably am. 😆
Your 3rd trip recently to Carlisle Scott and you didnt know they took Scottish notes. Ha ha.
Next time you're in Fort William, don't forget to visit Claggan Park, home of the mighty Fort William FC, once rated as the worst club in the UK 😁
Watched this video as it was one of yours and put it on for my younger brother who supports Bristol rovers however he now taking the piss as I watched it coz I support Bristol city who are in the EFL championship
Never had a problem with Scottish notes in Carlisle.
I live near Bristol Rover's Memorial Stadium and I think they do sell alcohol inside though.
I also will watch any football match! I would love to know your background, do you have any videos on how you ended up doing what are you now?
I believe he worked in the travel, travel agency hotel industry for many years.
Now you will have to come across to the East coast and do a match at Newcastle United.
Or alternatively he could visit a club not owned by a terrorist funding, anti gay state that is being used to sportswash all manner of evils?
I noticed that you did the 'just joking' bit in Motherwell's colours. Best butter on burnt toast or what?
Glad you finally remembered to get some real cash just in case in this episode!
You can buy alcohol in English stadiums, but you can't drink within view of the pitch. You have to drink in the concourse, even in hospitality. They'll have blinds that they close just before kick off, so you can't drink/watch the game at the same time
Shame that they struggling after promotion last season. Maybe Barrow might replace them to keep a cumbrian side in league 1.
I’m an Exeter City fan they play in the same league
We feel your pain here in NI re banknotes. This has been a bone of contention for many years as our notes have never been accepted in most of England (yes, just England). A few years ago my wife was actually CHARGED a commission in London to change our Sterling notes to English Sterling notes. I rang the BoE and was told our notes ‘aren’t legal tender anywhere in the UK as they aren’t printed at the Royal Mint’ and that businesses ‘can accept cabbages or chair legs in payment but can refuse your notes’. I kid you nor, those were the exact words used…..
Many places in England refuse to accept Scottish currency, even in the north. There's a big problem with Scottish counterfeit bank notes, and shops and pubs aren't sufficiently familiar with them to tell apart, so refuse them completely. I've been on the wrong end of a few, and they vary from laughable to very convincing. Carlisle is close enough to the border to spot a wrong'un.
Carlisle United otherwise known as Carlisle Nil. Seriously I've been to Brunton Park myself with a pal who's a Carlisle United fan.
Plymouth vs Newcastle would be a good trip!
I have done Plymouth away as a Sunderland fan which is actually further than Newcastle to Plymouth if you go by train as you have to go to Newcastle first from Sunderland!!
@@peterosullivan9942 and all that while commentating on the 3:30 from Chepstow! I hope they at least drew!
Went to Brunton Park 1st game this season with Fleetwood Town, drew 1-1 with over 10,000 there. Did you notice one of the stands is not aligned with the pitch?
That's because they had plans to redevelop the whole ground and move the pitch North to create more space for a new South stand but they ran out of money and only the first (East) stand got built.
