One of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking moments in the story. I saw in a comment for another video that the clock tower standing between them when Himmel put the ring in her finger could be symbolizing how time is the thing standing between their love ;__; It destroyed me..
I doubt this will happen in the anime but, it’d be an interesting end to the story, if when Firiren finally dies, she meets Death or Father Time, and she’s given a second chance with the hindsight and humanity she’s realized for herself. The entity tells her she will grant her this wish for all she’s done, and her newly discovered value for life. But, the catch is she will not live a long time. She will live as long as any human. At maximum, 100. At minimum, 70. She agrees, and is reincarnated, later meeting her lost love again, but this time, takes the leap. Or, alternatively, end where she’s aged physically as an adult, but with her newly discovered humanity, changed mentally to become more empathetic and enthusiastic. She then meets a man that reminds her of the hero she grew to love. She notices a hint that he may be a reincarnation.
That’s the hidden Faustian bargain of immortality. It’s a curse in the guise of a gift. Almost every story focusing on this topic, conveys this message. Friren seems so apathetic and numb to life and emotions, because she’s become jaded. She’s seen and done everything all ready. But, she takes her bear immortal life for granted. She’s spent centuries existing. But only now is she learning to live, and what that means. Gradually, she’s learning what it means to be human. Because of the curse of immortality, she let life’s joys and wonders pass her by. Only regretting what she’d lost or hadn’t done, years later. She’s learning to morn, leaning to yearn, to cherish.
I wouldn't even say that she's jaded - It's less that she doesn't appreciate things but more that she knows that tomorrow will come, forever. She knows the best place to watch the 50 year meteor shower - her montage is not the least bit dark and brooding, and she is always doing something with her time. And she is used to people that she knows dying, to their children and their grandchildren taking their places with the march of years. The problem is that she was so aloof, so dedicated to the task of centuries, that she didn't bond to anyone deeply enough to understand that her days were just as short as anyone else's. It's also possibly the nature of elves, to mull over questions for decades or centuries. To realize she loved someone whose time was so much shorter than hers, after the fact, is a tragedy driven through her core.
I already miss this show. I'm not particularly religious, but I'm praying for a second season. This is a particularly rare breed of special in the anime world. Very few shows have touched me as this show has. Anime of the decade. That doesn't take away from other shows but signifies how unique this was.

I have this buddy who I’ve known for five years now (no, this isn’t that kind of story, we both have other partners 😂😂) but realizing how close him and I are after half the time Himmel and Frieren travelled together, it makes you realize just how much time he had to grow to love her, enough that after those ten years he never wanted everyone else. Ten years seems like such a small time on paper, but to him it was everything. *She* was everything.
I'm not much for romance storylines in anything, but this got me. Himmel knew what he was doing. Frieren didn't, but she was still deep in the elf mindset where 10 years was barely worth noticing. It took Himmel aging and dying and her emotional break for her to be able to start realizing things like this. And Himmel was just... like he knew she didn't get it. He didn't push it, he didn't try to explain it, he was just there, by her side, happy to be nearby and have her in his life, even though he knew he would be in the meagerest fraction of hers. -Like a puppydog.-

Personally, I think she knows (Flamme was her master and she did teach Frieren about humans). I think she thought she'd go through life never having someone propose to her. Himmel was surprised by her choice of ring and gave her the whole experience of being proposed to. Himmel was always thinking of ways to be remembered and this little ring, that Frieren can easily carry, will always have fond memories of Himmel.
This probably explains why the elf population is so low. They don't feel the romance until an elf is about to hit 30 in elf years and starts wanting it.
I really felt for himmel...and for frieren too....But more for himmel as he had a time limit as a human....He loved her and showed her but frieren did'nt came to realise...till the end of the show I was sympathizing on himmel......(Loved frieren too and had growth afterwards)

I like to believe that at that moment, himmel was sure that his love for frieren would be conveyed in the future, perhaps not during his time, but someday, and it's what made him decide not to marry anyone else until his death.
