RDA "get them wrong they stop giving them to you"
That's the most O'Neill thing I've ever heard
Date Hewlett having an actual tech lab in the background is awesome.
On women liking the show, my wife adores Samantha and says she's one of the best written strong female characters in TV history. Just competent without pandering.
David Hewlett saying he was channeling Doctor Who is such an awesome coincidence.
“We got a smart Audience”
- David Hewlett
Since when?
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 Amanda Tapping has said her character has brought a lot of women into S.T.E.M fields and specially women who joined the military and Air Force specifically.
I love it that he is watching the shows with his son. That happened in reverse for me. My son had watched all of SG1, Atlantis, and SGU already, then begged me to watch it with him a second time. We made it a father son nightly event with snacks and the works. We have completed SG1 and Atlantis and are working our way through SGU now. Thanks to the work of these wonderful actors we have been able to share time together that neither of us will ever forget.
That's great! My dad introduced me to SG1 back in 07 when I was still pretty young and just got me hooked on the show. It's a great show to share between father and son.
i agree 100% with the marketing, my dad only watched stargate anything because my mom loved it.
Loved McKay, my favourite! But then again... even background charachters that appeared from time to time had a soul in these shows. I. NEED. MORE. STARGATE.
I've got to say that the marketing guys were dead WRONG about "only guys watching" the Stargate shows! Yes, I got started on Stargate:SG-1 because a male friend of mine had it on at his house. But that was pretty early into the series, and I was instantly hooked within just one r two episodes! And I started watching it at home. Now, thanks to reruns & Netflix, I've introduced another one of my female friends to it, and she was hooked on it in just 1 episode! And I had my 9 yr old neice here for a lot of the summer, and she got into the series really fast too!
There really ARE a lot of women who LOVE these series and the entire Stargate universe!!!! It's not just for guys!
David is awesome. At a con he once signed my diploma thesis in astrophysics as McKay in character. Hope he will be back soon so he can do that with my phd thesis :)
Lmao that’s so cool!
You can catch him streaming for 30 minutes everyday , during his workout cooldown he does Q&A on cam on YT.
Three cheers for David Hewlett!!!
Love SGA man.
David Hewlett never failed to entertain,so many brilliant moments of self confidence and doubt, scathing remarks and believable technobabble. I loved the episodes with his sister but I admit I have a crush on Kate. They really work well together and "A Dog's Breakfast" was an absolute joy. Thanks for these videos it is like meeting them without the awkwardness of being a tongue tied fan.
Yeah Rodney was a hated character in SG1 but Atlantis redeemed him he risked his life many times to save his friends. He also changed the future in The Last Man because everyone including his love interest Dr. Keller died he also saves Keller again in the Bill Nye storm episode.
Fun fact: A lot of people dont know about A dogs Breakfast
@@bakedcity857 yep, what is “A dog’s breakfast”?
@@galepat A comedy that was written and directed by David and stars him and a bunch of the SG-1 and Atlantis cast, David's character believes his sister's fiance is a serial killer so he sets out to kill him instead. As usual his sister is played by his real sister, Kate, but it also features Tayla and Dr Beckett from Atlantis and Tea'lc from SG-1 as his friends and family. There is also a ton of inside jokes and Stargate references.
His was a very well written character, walking the line between arrogant and uncertain.
Dr. Who.. LOVE IT!!! Thanks David!! You're AWESOME! :)
David has hit the nail on the head with Amanda. I've always had a thing for strong female characters and Carter easily makes that list. Hell, she probably tops it. She's not only physically capable, she's intelligent to boot. Could not have asked for a better actress than Amanda Tapping to play her and inspire women to become anything they could dream of.
David's an amazing actor in his own right. It's a shame so many tv shows and movies get all caught up in marketing. Make the show you want, the fans will come. It doesn't matter what it is, some people are going to love it and a lot of that will be because you made it the best show it could be.
I remember watching the episode where Rodney got infected with a parasite in his brain and started forgetting everything. That was the episode that showed me how good of an actor he really is.
Getting to see some of the actors today has been great
David, you’re absolutely right! Stargate is loved by everyone, adults, kids, men and women!
He's right, if they marketed the SG-1 and SG-A properly it could have been a bigger hit. Action, Sci-Fi, Drama, Comedy all mixed together. Imagine the ratings on NBC instead of Sci-Fi with a budget to match
Had a good friend who was so similar to McKay it was uncanny. Same inflections, word choices, geekness, tendency to monologue when no one is listening. Same sort of equally endearing and annoying, egotistical and self-doubting. Even a similar look, movement, and mannerisms. My friend died some years ago, and I will never get to give him shit about being a real life Rodney McKay. But when I watch Atlantis, I'm reminded. Thanks, David. You got him right. :)
David is my Absolute Favourite Actor in all the Stargate Universe, he acted it so well and produced a Character who is just so well known for his Geekiness and Hilarity, happy to say i emailed him last year and replied with a lovely email. Fantastic.
Thats really cool. I've been watching his YT for ages now and hes a really cool down to earth guy. It doesnt surprise me that he responded. Lucky you though. I would printit out and frame it.
I loved his dialog especially when Rodney and Daniel would be sharing dialog at their rapid paces together. It helped bring my attention in to what was being said, but they were do animated with words in delivery.
@@baurdt Yeah Daniel and David complimented each other really well. And the rogue Asgard arc was awesome. They were some badass Asgard in those suits.
I actually would have really liked to see Daniel become part of the Atlantis expedition. He really deserved to be there. Especially after Sam took over Atlantis. I really liked full bird Colonel Sam. She made a great leader. She was like a nerdy Hammond. Thats why I think Sam would make a great General running the SGC in the new Stargate series. Whatever form that takes on. You can go so many places with a new series. Especially now Atlantis is in San Fransisco and the Tauri now have the legacy of the Asgard. I think it could be a great series highlighting the results of humanity reaching its potential and taking over custodianship of the galaxy. Maybe a new faction of rogue Asgard could become the new enemy. And maybe we could finally meet the Furlings.
@@honestgoat lol I always imagined the furlings as looking like ewoks.
Apparently someone else also had the same thought as me if you ever watched that spoof episode during the last season of SG1 stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Furling
@@willc1294 Yeah. The 200th episode was one of the greatest episodes. It really highlighted what made SG1 the best of the the Stargate Universe. It didn't take itself seriously and was willing to make fun of itself. It made the humour lighthearted and relatable. Which is primarily why the series was SO successful. And yes, I think most fans kind of pictured the Furlings as an Ewok like species.
Without David knowing and doing these lines the show doesn't work.
RDA had the massive advantage that this wasn't his first show of that scale. It was clear to see that he was much more seasoned thanks to his experience from all those years on MacGyver.
I hated his character on SG1 and more so in Atlantis until I got used to it and waited for each episode what he is going to do next. I am glad he had a lot of scenes and for a character such as his may usually be dismissed socially at work but is understood by colleagues as his brilliance and contribution outweigh his social shortcomings. The SG Atlantis almost centered on him and I thought it is just fitting and I couldn't see anyone nailing the part other than David. : )
I completely agree with David, the marketing dep got it so wrong. Girls love Sci-Fi, action and adventure too, not just drama and romance. And we have $ to buy merch.
I watch all the Stargates, and movies, over, and over, since their first presentation, up until this very day. I love everything about the Gates, even, Rodney McKay..❤️✍️😷🇺🇲
This is a really good and funny story, he gave the same advice to both David and Joe and they took it the opposite way! David loved the dialogue and it lead to great scenes!
If I understand correctly, it's probably better that way. Cause David HAD to get it right. His words were the technical ones. The others not as much.
Man, I loved Rodney's character. He was so perfectly douchey. He kept an excellent balance of demanding just a bit more recognition than his competence should allow.
Loved Atlantis, I hope it gains a new popularity on netflix, we all hope for a new stargate show, ideally a continuation of the SG1 iteration.
I see Stargate, I click. I see Stargate Atlantis and Rodney Mckay, I click _really fast._
I feel like there needs to be an episode that explains why almost every planet has flora from Canada.. Something along the lines of, "There use to be an ancient Goa'uld fulfillment centre here and courier humans forgot to clean their boots.."
On a completely unrelated matter, Jeff Bezos acquires the Stargate franchise..
I'm 76 and my 66 year old girl friend watches STARGATE more than I do.
You can always tell how many women are watching the show by the amount of fanfics online... And let me tell you, Stargate is not lacking in that area!
And the irony is that neither SG-1 or Atlantis really pushed a feminist angle, they just had a smart, confident, kickass woman.
I can't speak for universe as I didn't really watch it.
@@CJR-wv8kc That's the best kind of feminism imho...
or as Amanda Tapping said - don't write Sam as a woman. Write her as a character, I'll make her a woman.
@@shishoeh completely agree, I just wish Hollywood would realise this was the way to write women.
I´m allways sad that Hewlett didn´t make more movies and stuff as the main character. He is one of the best actors atm and noone noticed! Just watching the first season of sga is enough to see the potential of this great artist!!
When I saw Atlantis for the first time Sheppard was my fav character, however on my 2nd 3th and 4th watching McKay took that spot
Oddly, the McKay character was never my favorite but David is one of my favorite personalities to listen too. In real life, this man is amazing.
Gotta love that David is a maker! +1 for 3d printing and his stuff!
Not only large amounts of technobabble, but said very fast.
Wow this clip is so underrated, like whenever I think about Stargate, I think about the exact same things you two were talking about here.
Stargate is the only show my wife and I enjoy a lot watching together. It's very unique for bringing a family together.
50% of the dialog> He's the workhorse of SGA.
i was afriad he would ruin atlantis. his character so poor in sg1.
that said. atlantis writing team did so much better. with most the episodes for everyone from the start.
i mean they had 7... seasons they learned mistakes from.
they took a char i hated seeing on screen. by season 2 i had to admit i liked mckay most. for most part the writers did really well with everyone. i never understood or liked the ronin and tealc episode. i thought be cool they meat. but their hate for one another was such bs. fighting etc.. just so wwe- wwf style bs drama i hated it even as kid. tealc was much to old for that kind of petty bs. as an adult watching that 18 ish yeaers later i had to just skip the scene entirely. imo worst thing they did entire series lol.
McKay stuck in a submerged Puddle Jumper with Carter!
Did I ever envy him for that episode.
David hit the nail on the head - It's not a male oriented show. My wife does a binge watch of SG-1 and Atlantis (and associated movies) at least annually. My daughter when she was in HS had it as her 'Go to" set to watch (some episodes more than others). While I enjoy the series (and the original movie) very much, I'm not one who over watches things and absorbs enough to be brutal in quotes and trivia. He is right that there really is a wide spectrum of demographic audience.
David can speak so fast. I think it's a natural ability. Even now you can hear his tongue moving really fast. hehe. It really added to the character I think. :)
David's love for what he was doing is shown in the quality of his end product. Never been one of those guys that has the impulse to meet actors, but I'd like to meet David.
I didn't know you got to see them on set. I'd have *killed* to be able to, at the time. As a woman who's loved the Stargate series since she was in her teens, it's nice to hear when my demographic isn't being left out of it (when talking about who watches. Because that's a real thing.). :)
I am surprised to see he appears to be an actual tech guy. :)
David Hewlett is a great actor, I particularly like his scared and condescending facial expressions. I also like everything he does in real life. He is a great and nice guy! 😀🤗
Marketing and the bean counters are the death of creativity.
David is 100% right! His knowing the lines well, and understanding the passion and the cadence of the delivery was critical to the believability and love of his character!
As a computer engineer, I've spent so many times talking to people about solutions to problems that were very complex and had this same passion and cadence myself. Peers that are really good at their jobs have this as well.
His portrayal of McKay made the character ring true on so many levels that you really believed he could fix any technical problem, and occasionally blow up a solar system. 😂
Ace to still see David always bring in the team he worked with, the cast of Stargate & SGA with SGU working together, keeping in touch / keeps the dream of a new Stargate alive more than ever! In a way, some of my friends plus their children look to Samantha Tapping, David Hewit and so many others as heroes, both for what they stood for and as role models, keep it going #Stargate #DialtheGate
One of my favourites min Atlantis. This character Gave the episodes so much colour.
He is my favorite!
5:18 David Calls David Rodney and neither even notice.
I like the fact he has a 3d printer in the background!!!!
David Hewlett is a MFing brilliant actor.
McKay in SG1 was borderline psychotic, near murderous nutbar. Totally slimy, disgusting, thoroughly hateable evil genius.
In Andromeda, he made in microscopic change in his character that turned him into a kind of sympathetic character. The change is large, but I can't tell clearly how he pulled it off, acting-wise. It's probably just me, but to me it makes the acting that much better.
Thanks Dave.
I grew up watching Stargate. My favorite TV sci-fi franchise. And David Hewlett is one hundred percent right, as a girl/woman that watched these shows, they are definitely not just for guys.
You should have told him, he told the same thing to Joe Flanigan and they were responsible for all his dialogue 😂😂😂 But it seems he enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed watching and listening to him 😄
Love these little clips, too, David, as well as the longer full interviews. Easy and quick to listen to and keep my attention and interest. Great idea to do them!
I wasn’t a huge fan of Atlantis, but McKay was such a great character
I just rewatched the whole SG series (sg1, atlantis and universe): they need to continue Atlantis and Universe (which was way ahead of it's time, duch a shame it git cancelled) or do some Stargate with the whole cast (i mean they aren't doing anything right now?)
It seems like RDA literally gave EVERYONE that exact advice. lol

My favourite episode featuring Dr. McKay was with Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse, and Dave Foley. You knew he would out-deuce the other three
David is amazing in the movie called nothing, if you haven't seen it watch it
Good film.
@@DialtheGate *Is it❓*
Given that McKay was supposed to be a genius, those lines had to be delivered in such a way that it looked like he understood what he was saying. If David had just memorized the words, we would be able to tell, and the show would have suffered.
The best parts were always when it looked like he knew everything was factual, basic knowledge, realized it wasn't dumbed down enough for the people he was talking to, and then you could see him trying to simplify it, whilst being annoyed with having to simplify it.
think its been said before but Amanda Tapping has said she used to research all the technobabble she would have to read in the scripts.
Such an amazing insight into the production of the show. Such talent and dedication to bring us our favourite show
I loved the character Rodney McCay! Always made me laugh… and a knew someone like him! Lol!
Last comment isn't a joke, my wife watched all of the stargate series with me, star trek, and she was more unable to tolerate the star wars sequels than me. I at least ran the second and third thru their entirety in the background as i didn't pay attention but she barely got thru the first one.
dude, david hewlett! friggin best guy around
Wonder if that's how RDA taught the other side of the camera to let him freestyle a lot of dialogue and just give him the notes he had to hit.
I always loved Rodney. It was so funny to have a diametrically opposed scientist to Amanda Tapping's "Carter," who was always the hero and most liked. Rodney irritated everyone so in those times where he did something heroic or cool it was so much more special. Probably my favorite Atlantis episode was Rodney getting the superpowers and going from brilliant scientist to super-genius to dying hero wanting to finally make a connection with his teammates. Obviously the episode where he was infected with the creature that removed his brain function and would eventually kill him was great as well.
His acting was very good, but more than that it was watching the characters around him react to him in a way that gave the scene real gravitas. I never really connected to Sheppard (too jokey) or Teyla so I liked the episodes focused on people in the surrounding cast or Rodney or Ronon.
He is spot on. I'm a woman and loved the series. Loved McKay...he was my favorite character by far:+) And yes, the one who gets the most lines as an actor is usually happy about that:+) God bless~
David not having time to socialise is basically method acting Rodney
Somewhat off-topic, but I just realized the similarity between David Hewlett and Drew Carey! Somewhat physically, but also the enthusiasm and such.
McKay was one of my favorite characters. You need to have him back on
They should do a series where the races that SG1 met help to upgrade Atlantis to try and save the crew of Destiny.
This is AMAZING!
I don't understand how youtube knew to recommend a stargate podcast to me, but im kinda happy. i loved sg-1 and atlantis growing up.
however i am confused, because the only thing mildly related the algorithm could've picked up this interest from is star wars and warhammer 40k. and i dont think those two fit anywhere near stargate as an interest
mckay was my fav of the series lol we love u stargate
Netflix nudity tag was ridiculous. They kept promising it but never delivered it.
I just want to know where you got that stargate pegasus class starship model in the background. I love collecting starship models.

I was 17 when SG-1 aired. Not a guy... Was not dating a guy. Perhaps its best to not alienate part of your fan base to make your point. The interview started off so well with that reference to the 4th reincarnation of the Doctor.
I don't think he meant anything by it. Getting frustrated with the marketing team, it's just something that helps them understand. I'm in the same demographic as you, too. I saw the original movie in the cinemas when I was a teen and though I was a little unsure about the show (loved the movie so much and was just worried about how it was going to go), I got into it for my own entertainment. :)
I absolutely loved Rodney McKay as a character. I dare even say he's my favourite in the SG universe. Not in the least place because of David's great acting. Currently rewatching SG: Atlantis and counting the number of episodes that start with a complaining Rodney. Will always have a soft spot for him!
