I love this series! Although I will be unable to read any of these for a while I'm super happy your are talking about each of them this year! Makes me excited for when I will be able to read some of these. I love learning about less well known classics.
But that's the thing about War and Peace. Big chunks of the text are in French because kids of noble families learned to speak and write French before they learned to write Russian and some of them didn't know Russian well enough to speak it, only on domestic day to day matters. In the original text the translation is given in footnotes at the end of the page.
This Penguin dose is a good counterpoint to Augustine’s City if God! I always look to see how the translator deals with the concept of atomic “swerve” and its Lucretian concept of free will. I have a Modern Library Giant that includes Epicurus and Lucretius then gives the Stoics with Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. Epicurus has some great aphorisms about friendship . . . and wine. Lucretius seems almost from another planet when juxtaposed with Epicurus. I’m excited to see the next dose!

I love this series! I read the first part of the nature of things in translations and some extracts in latin for a class last year. You just reminded me that I should read the whole book sometime soon.
This one gave me a little shudder as the last time I looked at a copy of Lucretius was revising for my Latin A Level when I was eighteen. It was fascinating though as far as I remember.
This series is genius! I’m so glad this is how you are doing it. Lucretius sounds pretty interesting. I found an audiobook of the poem on Scribd, unfortunately there’s no info on the translation but maybe it will be on goodreads.
Now I'm curious. I think I have an extract of it in some sort of anthology in Russian. I wonder what the translation is like. And they have a book here done as those Loeb Classical Library books you showed us, Latin text alongside Russian translation. You're indeed bad for my bank account:))))))))))
I really want to read Lucretius now, thank you. Your observation about star translators is so true. I'm having so much trouble trying to read Vico's New Science in a french translation, where so much of the book quotations are left in the original latin, without even a single footnote.

This is great. I read the exact copy you're holding minus the Kryptonian and found it weird and unsatisfying. I'm so glad you talked about the translator's defects because I'm sure that had a huge impact on my impression of the poem. Who was the translator you recommend? Frank Copley? Thank you Steve.
Considering that the average reader has absolutely no conception of the proper philosophical definition of Epicureanism coupled with the fact that it's read so often in ancient philosophy seminars, I'm surprised that Norton has never come out with a critical edition of it. Get a world-class translator like Stanley Lombardo or Frederick Ahl to do a new translation, have a good curatorial team find the best critical materials through the ages and, voila.

I have a translation of 'The Nature of the Universe' in prose by R.E.Latham (1951), in prose, a great read, many centuries ahead of it's time.

That's a fantastic idea, and you're right: it's weirdly overdue.
This would absolutely work, particularly when the extant writings of Epicurus amount to about 50 pages. Lombardo would be an excellent translator!
