The Japanese niko niko run! I did it for the first time and lasted 3 miles without gasping for air. My heart rate went up a little at the end but I was sweating a lot more than fast walking. My legs are tired by the end but back and hips were fine. It took a lot of patience because I can finish the 3 mile faster if I was to walk fast.
Wow everyone is a critic.....I enjoyed this video and got some good ideas to test. I had to give up running this year due to a back injury and trying to find technique to help start my running program again....most of this makes sense and aligns with other info from various sources. Thanks Carrie.
Literally got into pose running and just busted our 3 miles and ive literally not done that in a very long time plus it was less painful. Very happy for this free education on fitness online. Need more of stuff like that
Thank you for sharing the helpful tips on posture. I have seen far too many injuries from running while serving over 20 years in the military. As a professional bodybuilder carrying a lot of muscle mass and still having to pass the military's physical fitness test and being over 40, I need all the help I can get!
I do sprinting with L4/5 S1 disc herniation and hip osteoarthritis. I am in my mid fifties (and loving it!). Just learn to strengthen core, do resistance work, run bare feet often, and find your threshold and adapt your style to take the load off injured areas. This is instruction overkill with some technically correct points.
Thank you. This was very helpful. I have a bad back and a bad knee. This looks like it might work for me. Going to start slow (at 90 beats!) and see if I can eventually pick up my stride.
10 years after this video was posted, it is still very relevant with the recent situation especially when the pandemic hit all over the world and people need to do suitable exercise that they can do it alone anywhere and anytime in a relax way
Haha yea, I believe every Kenian do this too. This technique is also called Natural Running. Just take off your shoes and run. You will do it automatically because it is what our legs are designed to. Remember the movement you do and copy it with shoes, finished. You will feel like a running cat but get a lot of soar calves in the beginning because you absorb the shocks with your calves (forefoot strike) rather than with you shins (heel strike).
There are some interesting points made in the video which are especially useful for those of us over 70. Apart from the irritating opening music, I did not find the accompanying track too intrusive thereafter. It was a somewhat amusing fail when the coach tried to explain Tai Chi, and then grinding to halt. Tumbleweed moment. There are more recent videos posted about Slow Running which are worth checking out. Anyway, I feel a lot better about my shuffling and plodding now! Whatever your own level, enjoy the fresh air and the freedom.
I can and will go out now and try these amazing both techniques, posture and cadence, damm, I already feel running with that alignment, whoa, thank you!!
This is just superb, I've been looking for "learning powerful methods to build your Chi energy" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Fellmeroni Rudimentary Chi - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my partner got cool results with it.
There is a lot of defensiveness over here. Yes it is funny that people aren't familiar with proper running technique but I was one of them as well. Apparently I always used to push the ground away on impact, which is an unnecessary movement. To make it even worse I also used a heel strike which caused horrible tension. The idea of actually lifting your feet up and landing neutral or mid foot and let gravity pull you forward or backwards made a complete difference for me. I do have to clarify that I'm not a runner but this sure help on cardio days on the treadmill. To compensate for the forward lean I use an incline of about 5%, or more whenever I feel like it. Oh and instead of using a metronome to drive you insane, just count triplets and whenever you get the feel for the cadence it will become natural.
This is very new to me and recommendations from Ben parks running. Really good to learn this as I waste a lot of energy. Music in b.ground terrible!! But thankfully can follow video
Why the annoying, distracting background music, which makes it hard to hear, concentrate and really understand the technique being explained here. Very annoying, especially since the content seems well explained and taught. I certainly don't learn well with all that noise going on.
I don't get the hands on hip and chest and head and pelvic shake. But I like the part about speed and strides. I run with wide stride to increase speed.
"What does Chi Running have to do with Tai Chi?" The theory of balance - working with forces instead of against them is basic to Tai Chi. There are Yin Yang principles in this method too.It is my observation as a TC teacher that most adults do not move with ease or efficiently at all.
Man I've been doing this for years and then some guy comes up and puts a tm to it FFS! He is only the originator of the name chirunning but not the actual method which is good what he did, just shows you can market anything, wow!
More like "overthinking it running." My dog doesn't think about 10 different things when he runs (or before he runs). He runs without thinking. I didn't know that Tai Chi was so far from zen.
Christopher W It's like driving a standard....lots to think about when you first start doing it. It will become more natural when you practice it and get use to it.
A real Chinese Tai Chi instructor makes you do a simplified version of something (just watch and do, very little talking) for days or months until you get it right. For this, they may make you balance something like a book on your head when you are home everyday. Western instructors spends a lot of time talking about how to do it and why this and that, but then when you are doing it you are thinking too much and can't get it right.
I'm not sure about this technique, but I think it's like a flat landing, if you run on only the balls of the foot, you wouldn't last long. I think the point is that most joggers hit the ground with their heel and that's not the way for this practice. If you google slow jogging you will see a video of a Japanese man showing a lady how to do that (similar to this) and the video shows how joggers tend to hit the balls of their feet (which might be ok for running fast, but not for slow). I hope I didn't confuse you more, lol
Alice Wonderland awesome reply...so I use flat foot for all my runs and use balls of the foot only for uphills. Anyway I have booked a ChiRunning workshop in London now, will learn more
I see when you demonstrate your grounded foot goes back while your raised foot goes forward like all runners do. Can anyone show how the body is straight aligned?
This technique could be incorporated into traditional running - there's some good stuff in here. Yes, if you just did Chi running you'll like Goofy doing the Disney shuffle, and yes, other people will probably giggle, but applying some of the mechanics into traditional running could be really positive (and you'd look less Goofy-like).
I have a question. Can you chi run in any kind of running shoe? I just bought new running shoes like 2 weeks ago and of course they are expensive for my college budget. They have a lot of cushioning and a little bit of arch support. Is that okay? The guy in the video looked like he had shoes with a lot of support as well
+Sophia Kopasakis good point. Everybody feet are in different shape. I would recommend all future readers of your post to try this. Get a tennis ball. Pick it up with your toes. I was told by a foot doctor there is no known way to strengthen the foot, and then He immediately encourage me to purchase one of his arch support inserts. Well, you can exercise your feet, like you can with your hands. And you can make them stronger. And this is just one of many exercises to achieve that aim. Best Regards...Mr.P.
+MrPanetela Thank you for your advice. That Doctor is definitely wrong because I have been strengthening my feet since I first posted this and now my feet are incredibly strong.
