    In this series we will be looking at using minimal equipment to create quick & simple, 10 - 20 minute, watercolour paintings of birds. The emphasis will be on lots of movement, character and letting the beautiful medium of watercolour just do it's thing! With just the odd hit of detail. These are going to be fun and expressive watercolours, full of life...and hopefully for everyone from total beginner to seasoned watercolourist.
    As the series goes on I will be building on the these approaches, principles and tips, so please consider subscribing if this is your thing.

    I love your birds they give me the confidence to paint them myself. I struggle with where to put the legs and end up guessing and ruing my painting. Thank you Tom.

      Oh that’s lovely to hear. Yes, they really can ruin a good painting (I’ve done it many times!!)...which is why I’ve got very good at avoiding them..ha! Thank you for the comment.

      @@tomshepherdartist I tried the magpie and the kingfisher. My daughter in-law loved the magpie so much she wanted it for her birthday. So thank you. Would love to send you a photo but can't attach to this post.

    I’ve been watching lots of videos in my quest to return to watercolour painting. Yours was definitely one of those where I wanted to stop watching and get painting! Love your style and I thank you for the inspiration. Subbed!

    Hello. I've just discovered and am enjoying this series so much! Currently trying to paint along to the American Robin and the wren. I love you style and your skill with the watercolor. I've gone to Patreon to look for the reference photos but only see a few of the birds in the series?

    What is the size of the paper used or the image?

    Just had a go at painting this, but had to guess which colours you were using. I am quite pleased with the result although it took so long the wet into wet technique didn’t work as areas dried before I could do it. Is it possible to re saturate the paper after the first wash has dried? Also which paper do you use please ? Thank you for the tutorials, I love them !

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  3 роки тому

      Hi Christine. You can re-wet an area once dried to work over the top. usually you have to go quite lightly so not to disturb or muddy the under layer. I use a few papers, my favourites are Winsor & Newton Professional, Baohong and Two Rivers. Thanks so much. kind Regards, T

    So far I have painted each bird and learned alot--I was curious about why these birds have no feet?

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks Jane...that's lovely to hear! Basically I'm rubbish at painting feet!!...More seriously though I've found that too much detail in the feet can look a bit odd with this style of painting, so I either avoid them all together or hint at them...it's certainly something I'm working on, that is trying to find a good way to depict them..

    I Love your videos and painting style. I've never worked with Holbein but love the idea of no ox gall ... could you advise me on a selection of Holbein colors that would enable me to follow along on your bird adventure. Thank you so much

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much for your comment and support! I love Holbein colours!!:) A good place to start is very simply a cool and warm of each primary. My selection is - ultramarine Blue (warm), pthalo blue ( cool and very strong, great for turqouise), pyrole red (warm and orangey), quinacridone red (cool and pinky, you could even go quinacridone magenta for a very cool red), imidazilone yellow (cool) and new gamboge yellow (warm)....for me that covers everything you would want to mix, pthalo and pyrole give you a very deep rich dark.....of course you could always chuck in some extras plus convenience colours eg permanent orange, burnt sienna, prussian blue, turquoise, purple, all very useful but not essential if you have primaries :) Hope that helps!!

    • @lilyhess772
      @lilyhess772 4 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much, Tom. This certainly helps. How essential is the Manganese blue for you in youre mix of colors - you used it for the blue tit ...

    • @tomshepherdartist
      @tomshepherdartist  4 роки тому +1

      @@lilyhess772 Manganse is just one of those colours that I personally just really love. By no means essential but I love using it.... It makes lovely muted greys and it is also naturally a lighter colour than Pthalo or Prussian, which are both dark. Which means it doesn't give you deep darks...It's cool and more muted than Pthalo, which is very powerful, almost too much sometimes. So very useful 'midtone' blue, recommended but not essential :)

    I love your tutorials, but I botched this one. Didn’t mix up enough paint for the brown and black bits. Will keep trying!
