Starting accession talks is practically nothig... it can last for 20 years or more... Turkey was officially recognised as a candidate in 1999... Talks began in 2005...

Since you are not willing to investigate it yourself, let me explain. Turkey is backsliding and there extreme Islamitisch approach while holding the EU hostage isn't helping. Economy in shambles, back door deals with Putin and buying the S-400s didn't help either. Crackdown on journalist and law gives them no footing to be in the EU.
So no, Ukraine will be in the EU very quick, probably within 3/4 years.
I hope this is just such a signal of sympathy and support. And real integration into the EU will take place once all the criteria have been met, which is no earlier than around the 30s and 40s of the 21st century.
This is not correct for west balcan after 2 decades of requests tasks ecc they deside to enter ukraine.
The EU was formed as an economic club without common foreign policy mandate. By insisting on accession talks with Ukraine, a state with an unknown future borders, industrial, and population profile, the EU is trying to be a geopolitical pole doing empire building ... which is impossible because it has no common foreign policy mandate.
Orban sees through the empty East-West ideological signally and shows the EU is just empiror without cloths.

They can do membership talks but I hope none of them will receive special treatment or fast track. They should go over the same process in reforming their own government first. We can't have another Hungary within EU.

Exactly. We first need reform. We need far less qualified mayority voting/vetoes and more power to parliament, and only then can we think about enlargement. Then, even if all of this would somehow pass (which I highly doubt), there are a lot of countries that are waiting to become eu members for years. How about Albania or North Macedonia?

With majority voting, some countries will be raped when it comes to their vital national interests. The age of european consensus will be over. Big countries like Germany and France will have their way and dominating the EU harder then they already are. This would crack the EU in less than a decade.
@axoloneidolon4702 If the eu stays like it is and enlargens, then Hungary style blockades would make it useless in less than a decade. I would rather have the eu fall apart into different tiers or different zones than it becoming useless.
Also, multiple small countries can band together in a parliament to resist against legislation that would be unfair to them, and there is still a court that has to judge if everything is consistent with the treeties, etc.

This isn't a vote on joining. This is a vote on whether to start the process to confirm they meet the conditions to join. Whether any European country joins the EU is a matter for the 27 national parliaments who are directly elected lawmakers. Also, a national parliament can call for a referendum on the matter if they wish. In theory, the Polish or Italian parliament can decide to have a national referendum on whether to vote yes or no to any European country joining the EU.
Its just a time buying move that’ll get to nowhere.

Both countries have disputed regions, high corruption, broken economy, poor population and one of them is actively involved in war. Perfect candidates, if those are criterias to join EU, next should be Lybia, Syria and Afghanistan.

As a EU citizen I prefer Ukraine to become a EU member but not Serbia.
Hungary causes enough problems for the EU already. We dont need another pro-russian double agent in the EU.

In general, it takes 10 years from application to admission.
The application was submitted 3 years ago. But the EU likes to host several countries together, it could be a year faster if all goes well in Moldova, North Macedonia and Ukraine. Wait another 6 years.

But I think we can agree that the contract will be signed in 5 or 6 years.
