  • In all it's retro Glory, here is the ART SGX LT Preamp. No pedals, no nothing. Just direct in to the SGX and power amp/4x12 cab/mic.
    Run through of every single factory preset on the HOTONE AMPERO. I love this thing. Great tones, very compact, great price. It's the perfect multi pedal IMHO.

    Man, nostalgia. Really serviceable brown sound out of this. Totally brought me into shred inspo territory. I remember using something as a cab sim back in '93..might have been an unit EQ for phono/turntables. Regardless, it kicked ass!

      @@techniqueswithtodd aside from the sgx-lt's I had a few other pieces of art equipment. I loved each piece. As with the lt's I would image a mono splitter to feed both sg's work out a patch to a stereo backend and feed a power amplifier to a cab pair (stereo) with the right signal top going stage right the bottom going stage left then use the 2nd lt to delay the patch ( a few Ms) and send the 2nd patch to another power amplifier for another pair stereo n the inverse manner. And using the delay and phase function to add width to the quad image. Sounded great in my music room and off the desk

I appreciate your channel, and your videos.. One of the best channels on youtube for any/all guitar related stuff! Maybe in the future you can create videos on how to "hook-up" rack mount affects, utilizing effects loops etc. That would be so helpful, since you have the skills to build guitar rigs and create different configurations. In fact, is there an email address i can use to ask you a few questions on how to create an effects chain?

      Thanks for watching! :) You can find me on Facebook and on Instagram and just message me. I'd be happy to help :) There are tons of vids on building fx chains right here on youtube. As for the SGX, I have had WADS of people ask me this same question about how I"m making it sound so good. I have a very heavy right hand technique for striking and muting. It helps drive whatever unit I"m using. It's just a stock unit with no pre or post fx, most of the tone is in ones fingers :)

    • @techniqueswithtodd
      @techniqueswithtodd  4 роки тому

      These have not been built in quite some time. This is "vintage" gear at this point. The one in this video is the easiest to use as it has wads of fx and a distortion preamp which is the knobs on the front. All the presets are fixed and cant be modified so you just find one that you like and bam!

    Does the SGX LT use the same preamp as the SGX 2000 (Express) ? Turbo Tubes, Psycho Tubes, Overdrive Tube, Solid Super etc ? I have a SGX 2000 (Express) and the drive tones don't seem to sound like this LT or say The SGX Nitro, Or SGE Mach II.

    • @techniqueswithtodd

      This has no tubes of any kind. It's a pure chip only unit. I think the secret sauce is using the drive section in the correct way. Some folks tend to "overcook" it imho.

I was wondering if it'd be possible to hook this up to a MIDI controller and change between whichever patches I want to during a live show. Can you assign whatever patch you like to footswitches on a MIDI controller with this, for easy access to the sounds you want?

    • @techniqueswithtodd
      @techniqueswithtodd  2 роки тому +1

      It's got a line out but not a speaker sim. You can plug it directly in to a mixing board, but you may want to put it through a cab emulator first. I love these old units :) They are getting pricier and harder to find! Another option is a less vintage unit like the 11 rack which can get the same types of tones and is widely available for cheap!

  • @65Superhawk
    @65Superhawk 5 років тому +1

    What was the signal chain here? Were there any effects in addition to the preamp? Was it going into an amp and then miked or did it go right into a d a w?

    • @techniqueswithtodd
      @techniqueswithtodd  5 років тому +2

      Signal Chain was GUITAR to ART SGX LT. No boost, just going to a 5 watt hotone mini head set on clean to a randall 4x12 and sm57 mic to daw. Pretty basic. It's just what the unit sounds like. I'm just switching presets as they can't be modified. Most tone happens in the fingers IMHO.

      @@techniqueswithtodd damn it I miss mine! Got it in '92 as a closeout when the next models were coming in at my local shop. $115 - it was the bottom of the line model. I had many procs, SPX90 mk2, Lexicon LXPs, Eventide 949 (not sure on model), others. I had a sweet Fender Tremolux so rarely used external preamps, but for that price and convenience of tone shaping, had to have it! Gave up playing a few years later and sold it to a used gear shop, they gave me $175!!
      Had I known I wasn't done playing, just a break (25 year break lol), I'd have just stored everything away. Now Tremoluxes are minimum a few grand, can't find my Fender custom shop strat to buy back, but now that you reminded me how much I enjoyed the SGX lt, gotta snatch one up! Great vid man.

    Most of these ART's I see online don't have knobs like this. Is it easier with knobs to edit?

    • @techniqueswithtodd
      @techniqueswithtodd  4 роки тому +1

      This one does not allow much editing. The knobs are just for adjusting the overall tone and how much distortion is being used. Basiically, it's for adjusting the pre amp section. The patches themselves can't be chainged on this unit. The only thing you can change is how much or little distortion you want on a given patch. After that, you just select which patches you like. You can then switch between them using a Midi Controller :)

    Man. This is one of 3 ART products that I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT as a guitarist..I play tech metal on Bass Vi's and 8 strings tuned to the floor and I JUST bought one of these to have a backup after watching this vid.. I thought. Well if guitar center has one for under $150 ..IF they have one. Which is a GIANT IF . and lo and behold . $70.99 after tax and shipping was $88.90. that's A STEAL considering it even has the manual with it lol and these are getting VERY DIFFICULT to find.. there is 2 on reverb RIGHT NOW ..one for $300+$67 shipping. And another for $99 + $25 shipping Open to offers. Not greatest physical condition but it's FULLY functional as it states. I gotta say this IS harder and harder to find.. but not NEARLY AS DIFFICULT as the other two staples of musical enjoyment of mine which are
    1. ART DUAL CHANNEL TUBE PARAMETRIC EQ FULL SIZE RACK MOUNT (Same visual layout and colors as the half rack version or Tube Pac)
    2. ART/PEARCE DST 80/80 RACKMOUNTABLE PREAMP/POWERAMP/HEAD/MIDI PROGRAMMABLE MULTI-FX UNIT.
    I read that the power plant was the basis for designers who ended up at tech 21 and gave us a piece that I CURRENTLY use in my rack over the ADA MP1, Peavey Rockmaster, AND RockTron Piranha.. the Sans Amp PSA 1.1 Silverface..
    At any rate . I found a NOS power plant for $80 + $25 shipping .. it's NOTHING like ANY tech 21 product I've used. AT ALL.. and although it had a stellar and powerful eq section.. it didn't have NEARLY enough gain. And I like my tones of course Brutez..but also not super gainy and saturated so I don't need a TON.. But all n all ..wasn't there.. underwhelmed. But this? The SGX LT.. you can pull modern chugs and djents RIGHT OFF THE FRONT PANEL.

    Followed by probably this. THE SGX LT ..maybe tied with Innersound IVP.. but NO DOUBT. in my top 5. And I've owned a HUGE store in the bay. Geared towards metal related gear where I had around 300 different preamps.. I put this up there for
    SLEEPERS // UNSUNG HEROES THAT COULD BE
