Zach Hill literally open an entire world to me with this record. My jazz drum teacher told me to listen to this album. Best choice of my life. It introduced me to math rock. The drumming is insane (my fav beside Jon Karel's work on Worse than Alone and any of the drum work from toe).
Your jazz drum teacher is a fuckin’ badass. When I was a section leader in Drumline, I’d test our drummers by playing along with some of their stuff (the tracks that are *in the realm* of normalcy, like 9/8 instead of some of their crazier shit lol) & it was always a joy when they’d be able to get it down.
At 1:37 when Anthony slide Exmilitary on the screen, his head provides the perfect missing continuation for the man on the album cover, they line up perfectly and it's such a touching moment.
@1995Nekfeu No, I agree. I try to keep my vids as short as possible, but some opinions are harder to explain than others, ya know? I know I've made 500 vids, but I still feel like I have a lot to learn. Maybe I'll get better at saying what I need to say in a certain amount of time.
headless just about makes me cry with that little riff, every time. what's to hate? angular tricky riffs with close to the best drumming i have seen, absolutely in love
@violetninja i think it's a revisit in terms of instrumentation, but these guys are obviously working with a lot more grooves and melodies this time around. i like that a lot. i just wish it sounded better is all. :-)
This album completely blew me away. Definitely going to be on my top 10 for 2011. I don't really agree about the mixing, but I'm not an expert on that stuff. Overall it's a really fun album to listen to and exactly what I needed between all the good hip-hop from this year. Thanks for the review Anthony!
This album is truly a grower. On The Record is still shit, but the other nine tracks are brutally amazing after repeated listens...SEVERAL listens!!! If your only complaint is production quality...adjust the equalizer or something...this bitch OWNS! It's still not as good as HYHI, though:( They'll never top that. It's much darker, though:)
I love this album, it is really intense and chaotic, but also melodic at times. I'm generally not into this kind of mathematic, technical style of guitar playing, but this lp generally melted my face off.
to me, tripper is a return to form. hella took all the things that made hold your horse is and acoustics sound good and added it into this album, and clearly spencer took some influence from carson mcwhirter on the higher guitar. i fucking love tripper, and it was a great send-off imo. not anything over-the-top weird like chirpin hard where theres 6 mins of silence at the end (not that i dont like zachs weird shit like that) but just plain, simple, good hella. with the same feel of hold your horse is, the energy and instruments of hella and dilute live and the mix quality of acoustics, i think tripper is perfect. favourite song: osaka
I don't think they will ever top hold your horse is though-although to be fair I've only recently got into them through a friend introducing me to Don Cab so I've not given this album a real proper listen to like I have their first album Edit-i only just found out that Marnie Stern plays in the house band on Seth Myers haha apparently she got the inspiration for her tapping style from playing and touring with Hella and seeing how Spencer Seim plays lol
Zach Hill treats his drums like Chris Brown treats Rihanna's face circa 2009 I thought of that joke a while ago but I figured some needledrops may get a kick out of it ....but then again, no
i think that making music it's not just looking for the wirdest sounds, i think that it is a matter of improvement too. that's the reason of why this album is my favourite of this band
I really don't think you can knock a Hella album for the mix. Cause like Lightning Bolt, the message gets through, as chaotic and intense as it is. And the mix on this one is way more developed than Hold Your Horse Is.
I completely agree with a lot of what he’s saying especially about the mixing on the record. Fantastic record but every time I listen to it I can’t help but wish the mixing and audio quality was a bit better. It’s like listening to jazz on cheap $10 earbuds, the music itself is amazing but the sound going into your ears isn’t the best
@MrZombiejfk It's not so much about being an expert. I just though previous efforts from these guys sounded better, ya know? The guitars could be clearer.
sorta with you on this one even though I was hoping it would be a 9/10 cause i'm a hella fanboi. my biggest gripe is the production quality, def agree that it feels very thin and flat instead of like hold your horse is or the devil isn't red. I like the songs and the melodies even though it feels a little stripped down and groove oriented with less experimentation. I would've loved a really weird album for their return to duo status (I really liked 666 for its strangeness).
@theneedledrop I get ya, and to be honest I think I have to give it a few more listens. I'm kind of a slacker music nerd. ;) Also I should definitely thank you for reviewing that 'Giles Corey' album, I doubt I would have heard of it otherwise. Really good stuff, can't wait for my disc + book to arrive.
Nice review Anthony. I haven't listened to "Tripper" yet, but I've always found the mixing on Hella and Zach Hill's solo stuff to be pretty weak; it ruined "Church Gone Wild" and it's the reason that even Hella's best work has never risen above a 7/10 for me.
Hella still wins in my book, solely for Biblical Violence. Sadly enough, I haven't listened to any record since HYHI. Tripper sounds right up my alley though. Thanks for the review. You're always a joy to watch, Fantano. Keep it up!
@frankie1833 I was really hoping he'd be more positive about it too when I seen that he'd reviewed it, but I guess he's right: the production is pretty off and doesn't let the music breathe as well as it could and a couple of the tracks do verge on forgetful. The claustrophobic kind of feel its style allows is pretty interesting though, it gives the tunes a hell of a lot more intensity than I've heard on anything so far this year. Some more diversity would've been nice but meh, I'm happy/sold
Awwwww, you didn't like it as much as I did, I'd a given it a decent 8. I know those guys (Zach & Spencer) probably don't really give a shit about how well mixed it is, all the sounds come through well enough for me. That and I didn't really feel it was a revisit to 'classic' Hella, perhaps a modernized interpretation of what one could call classic Hella. I did think it coulda used a bit more of a diverse sound, as you said.
jack and icp's new song as well as Trophy Scars - Never Dead Never Born the first one cause its so unexpected/ they must be trolling us and the second one because its pretty darn good
@daddyfatsaxohten it's disappointing, cuz i like how many grooves and melodies this album throws out there. it would have been a great return if it sounded beter.
Zach Hill literally open an entire world to me with this record. My jazz drum teacher told me to listen to this album. Best choice of my life. It introduced me to math rock. The drumming is insane (my fav beside Jon Karel's work on Worse than Alone and any of the drum work from toe).
Make sure to check out his solo stuff too. Different for sure, but the drumming is consistently mindblowing.
radiosurgery already have :)
Daken Nine igualmente
thats one rad jazz teacher

WHEN FANDINGUS CALLS DEATH GRIPS A SIDE PROJECT
Henry Phillips it was Zachs side project at the time
And the rest is history.
Death grips is rubbish.

@crocz are the extra frames freaking you out or something?

Its on purpose
@doc998 i'm using final cut. is that why?

Cute response fantoine :)
@redsoxfan591 is that actually gonna come out...officially?
Face Tat - Melon: Too Loud
Tripper - Melon: Too Quiet
I just listened to this album. Loved the energy. Zach Hills is a beast.
cantseethe -sun thanks
@solodolo1994 the same thing i did last winter?
headless just about makes me cry with that little riff, every time. what's to hate? angular tricky riffs with close to the best drumming i have seen, absolutely in love
@Broyale26 no, he probably just browses /mu/ on 4chan.
I’m so glad he doesn’t look at the album on the wall anymore while talking.
You should review Beast of Both Worlds by Solos. It's Spencer Seim's side project with Aaron Ross, who did vocals for There's no 666 in Outer Space.
@violetninja i think it's a revisit in terms of instrumentation, but these guys are obviously working with a lot more grooves and melodies this time around. i like that a lot. i just wish it sounded better is all. :-)
Thoughts on this now?
I feel like its not too important to be clearly hearing every sound.
It melts into each other and pulls me in with it.
Can we gwt a revision

@ultraviolence6655321 glad you're liking it. make sure to check out the duo's earlier LPs, too!
A tip when you hear him talk a bit negative about it at the end it's always a six.

Matt Ensign
Yeah, Headless, Self Checkout, Yubacore, Long Hair, Psycho Bro and Osaka are all absolutely flooring, especially after multiple listens
And yeah, the album still couldve been mastered better. I bet Fantwon wouldve at least given it a 7 with good mastering. Itd sound amazing
@@edwinbeta2806 Yubacore is such a banger

I f*cking love this album, I'm so glad they went back to their "roots", stripped-down, crazily impressive and noisy math.
