  • A look at the Bell 206 Helicopter, main rotor droop compensating system.
The characteristics of the power turbine governor are such that as the helicopter rotor system power requirements increase, N2, Ng (power turbine) RPM tends to decrease, and if the rotor system power requirements are decreased, then N2 ,Ng (power turbine) RPM tends to increase. The power turbine is directly connected to the main rotor through driveshafts and gearboxes.
On helicopters, it is highly desirable to vary rotor system power requirements without having a change in N2, Ng RPM, main rotor RPM NR needs to remain constant. Therefore, in order to prevent a N2 , Ng RPM variation when a power change is made, the helicopter manufacturer provides a droop compensator.
The compensator acts on the power turbine governor such that the N2, Ng. will be held constant as power to the rotor system is varied. The droop compensator re-
sets the power turbine governor spring during power changes so that the resulting stabilized N2, Ng following a power change is the same as it was before the power change. Thus, when the operator increases collective, the power delivered to the ro- tor system will increase and the stabilized NaNR will remain the same.
In the event it is desired to operate at a different N2, Ng it is necessary to reset the power turbine governor by some means other than the droop compensator. The helicopter
manufacturer provides an electrical beeper system. By means of manually positioning the beeper, the system resets the power turbine governor so the N2, Ng RPM will be governed at a different speed.

    Interesting.
I fly Radio Controlled helicopters (1750mm or 5' rotor diameter) and rotor rpm is controlled through a electronic governor but I have the ability to select 3 different rotor rpm limits based on how i want to fly that are selectable in flight.
Low (1200rpm) for hovering maneuvers and 2 high (up to 2200rpm) limits for aerobatics. 🇦🇺

Amazing how short the throws are. I assume, therefore, the rod ends can’t have any play every component has to be very stiff.

Does the governor work somehow the same as a metering unit? Or it has a metering vlave inside?

Nice training demo helicopter, everything is cut out so you can see the exact movements of each component as they operate. Much thanks. Do you do type training on the 206 or 407s?

We currently do not do type training. We did at one point in the past for the 206.
