- Photographing a migrant flock of pink-footed geese in my local area... this started out as a morning out with the camera to make a quick video, but quickly developed into a much longer, and often frustrating, project to try and catch up with them!
🐾 Please subscribe to see more of my videos bit.ly/2RXfyUa 👍 I've got loads of exciting nature photography trips and projects with the wildlife camera coming up 😊
Every year a large flock of pink-footed geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) use to the fields around our town as roosting sites during the winter when they come over from Iceland. I set out on a blustery morning in November to get some images, but the geese were too far away and the weather was only getting worse. What started out as a quick hour out to see the geese and make a video ended up being a project over several months... It seemed like every time I thought I knew where the geese would be or how I could get close to them, they'd do something different / go somewhere else! While this was a great example of how wildlife photography can be really frustrating, it is also a good example of how working at a project over a longer time results in a deeper knowledge of the subject and their behaviour, and that part is really rewarding.
The project is far from over and I will continue looking for the geese over the next month until they leave back to Iceland, but realistically I had to end the video somewhere! However, I will be back next Autumn for another attempt, armed with the knowledge gained from this year, so stay tuned for that..!
Sorry it's been so long since I uploaded a video - with our baby daughter and a full time job, the amount of free time I have for editing is next to nothing at the moment, but I will really try to not leave such a huge gap before I get the next one out 😊

Great to see back ☺️. The truth is nature doesn't always play ball and thought that was very well edited to show that persistence is required. Hope to see more from you soon.
Thanks Kath, glad you enjoyed it :) I've definitely got more videos coming eventually - loads of ideas and even some footage already recorded, but very little available editing time..!
Thanks for sharing your journal about the Wild Goose Chase. I am happy you decided to put your adventure together to share, worth the effort. Hopefully, your experiences will help you next year. I definitely understand the challenges an disappointments of pursuit a photography goal. It is rewarding for the experiences, even without the successful photos.
Thanks Glen, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, it's really worth it just for getting out and seeing what's around :)
Beautiful footage my friend. Great Collection. Thanks for sharing.
A great goose hunt Geoff. The sound of hundreds or thousands of geese in early morning makes me feel alive, as I’m sure it does you also. Some days getting a picture is just a bonus. Thanks for sharing.👍👍
Thanks Terry, glad you enjoyed it! That sound is just fantastic :)
Good to see you back ! I thoroughly enjoyed your search for the geese and your recording of the morning lift off from the roost. I am fortunate to live near a lake where several breeds of geese roost during the fall migration. The cooler temperatures and dark mornings out here in Alberta in the late fall usually means I am usually the sole witness of the spectacle of thousands of geese lifting off from the freezing up lake the as the sun comes up. Its good to know there are others out there that appreciate such wonders of nature.
Thanks Dave :) That sounds absolutely amazing, the moment they all take off is just brilliant...
Great to see you out again seems a long time, thanks for shearing Geoff.
Thanks very much - it was a long time since the last video, but it won't be so long until the next one :)
Excellent Geoff - some nice east coast goosing, always but always a case of putting your finger in the air whilst crossing the others. Days at the Mondliath canny be too far away I'm sure, hope you're settled a bit more now with the little one and the routines are going smoothly. Remember those days. Great to see and hear you again, very best dude, Si.
Thanks very much Si :) Indeed, looking forward to a reduction in travel restrictions etc and then I'm really hoping for a trip up to the hills, even if it's just for a day!
Good to see you back. Gave me a chuckle thinking of the number of times I've been through similar experiences, except in my case heat is more of an issue than cold rain
Thanks Steve, I guess we face very different weather challenges!!
Really nice seeing a new video from you Geoff! I think frustration is a part of the game and it makes it so rewarding those times we succeed 😊
Thanks very much Kjell - I totally agree, it's part of what makes wildlife photography such a great thing to get out and do :)
Always excellent video a tour de force 👌👏
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it :)
Good to see you still enjoying the craft. Great images on instagram
Thanks Steve :)
Loved the video Geoff and its amazing how as wildlife photographers we all have subjects that we find a struggle. I suspect you won't find this funny but because the River Trent flooded behind our house we had a lake for about six weeks with a thin strip of grass maybe 25metres in width over our back fence. Oh, almost forgot to mention the 300 geese!! Great perseverance mate👍
Thanks Scott, glad you liked it :) Indeed, I'm sure that's true, and sometimes you just don't know when you start a project that it's going to be tricky... Great that you get a temporary wildfowl lake there, though if I recall your video correctly the floods nicked your bird feeders ;)
Geoff, thanks for sharing that. Anyone who’s spent any time doing wildlife photography can relate to your experiences. I’ve been trying to photograph coyotes and red fox on some private land for over a year without a lot of success. My trailcam shows there are plenty of them in the area, but they are mostly active at night. Camera trapping may be the only efficient means of capturing them on camera.
Thanks Jerry :) Ooh, those sound like tricky subjects - I guess if you work out their favourite trails you can wait for longer light summer nights (depending on where you are) and then hope you get lucky...
Great to see you back Geoff, missed seeing your vlogs! It really is just great to be out amongst it, birds or no birds! Enjoyed the video very much, pink footed are great birds! Not something we see down south much! All the best R 👍
Thanks very much Richard, glad you enjoyed it :)
good experience
Wow, excellent video Geoff! Looks like Wildlife photography has a lot in common with frustration we get in research, but so much satisfaction as well!
Thanks very much - yeah, I guess any project that has an unknown outcome will have frustrations and rewards like that :)
Hey buddy! nice to see you back, hope the family are all well 😊i've been getting some pics of Greylag, Canada and Brent Geese along the thames here...Nothing better than the Geese flying back ive watched them on Islay coming back superb stuff and food for the soul ❤️... Maybe find the farmer/owner of the field and whack a hide up and leave it there? I'm glad you said the roll with it bit, I'm a naturalist and nature nut, always have been, i love watching wildlife and getting a good picture now sometimes has to come as a bonus to the experience eh, and thats being a naturalist wildlife photographer is all about... great vlog and you take care eh..... JP
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it :) Yeah, I'm thinking of doing that if the field looks like it's going to be similarly cultivated this year... I'd love to see the wintering geese on Islay some time, I know they get a lot there and even mange the fields in such a way as to help them.
@@GeoffCooper Maybe a trip next year buddy! 😉
@@JPLamoureuxsTravels sounds good :)
Great to see a new video from you Geoff covid and family responsibilities have stopped so many of us getting to do what we enjoy most.
The video is very enjoyable and I love your perseverance it finally paid off and like yourself its the journey to that point which I always enjoy just as much even the frustration :)
Thanks Craig, glad you enjoyed it :) Absolutely, we've all had to curb our ambitions on a lot of projects in the past year, so it was really good to find a local one! To be honest, I wonder if I would have persisted in the same way if I could roam more freely to other locations... anyway I'm glad I stuck with it!
Nice one. I see you have the same struggle as many geeshunters here in Norway have. You dont get close enough. The geese is a wery observant bird, and it's always a head or 50 that are on the watch. The hunters usually get on their spot when its still pitch dark and uses hides/blinds an additional plastic/ rubber geeses that they place out in the feeld, looking like feeding birds, to make them land or at least take a round over to see. I live in a part of Norway that probably has the most migrating geese. Both spring and autumn. They have actually increased so mutch in numbers now, that they start to be an problem for farmers, (eating the first green gras of the field, in spring). We are talking about huge numbers, like 50.000 to 70.000 geese. :-)
Thanks! Wow, yeah that sounds like a lot of geese! My early morning attempt at the field had that idea behind it - get there before the geese... But by then they were going to a different location (and I've not seen them on that field again, though they are definitely still in the area)...
Good to see you back out there under the pressure of parenting well done ! Nice video, we don't get the Pink foot variety around here so good to see ! 👍😍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
saudades dos seus videos
Thanks :) Don't worry - there will be more! There's just no free time to edit them at the moment!
Great video nonetheless Geoff! It's all part of our hobby, isn't it :)
Coincidentally, I have a vlog about photographing geese as well today :D And I also had to deal with the rain...
Thanks Jeroen - absolutely, the searching and the waiting are all part of it and I don't think it would be as much fun if it was too easy!!
I've put your goose video on my watch later list but haven't seen it yet - looking forward to it :)
Do you live in Scotland, Geoff??? My son moved up there last year. Hopefully, next year I am going to visit that country. He moved to Edinburgh. Who knows, may be we can meet and make some nice birding photography!!!! :) Just wondering, can't you aske the owners of the field, permission to take photos? Down here, you can do so, IF you find the owners!
Yes I do - I live on the coast in Ayrshire and I work in Glasgow! Give me a shout when you're here :)
Yes, I have actually now made contact with the owner of the big stubble field in this video and I've had my pop-up hide there for some other projects (not been successful with any of them yet though)
Very beautiful
Use SnapBridge to see yourself... :) Sk˜
Heh, I think that's also faffy due to then needing to have the phone turned on, get the bluetooth connection running etc.. To be honest, snapbridge is probably quite useful, but it was so annoying and buggy when they first released it I have been a bit put off from it ever since!!
@@GeoffCooper it’s much better now. I hated it in the beginning as well 😎
@@skoukal88 fair enough - I guess I should give it another chance!
very long line of wild goose in the sky
this is so amazing. great sharing. lik220, ne#sub
new friend here watching this video
Very nice videos!👍
Nice video, Like 98 and Greetings from Italy :)
Thanks very much Peri :)
You are becoming one of my favorite youtubers. Glad I found my own pack sort of speak. Keep up the great work brother.
Thanks very much - I appreciate that :) I'll have to head over to your channel and have a look too - seems like you have some interesting stuff on there!
Wow that was a few tough days at the office Geoff. The sound of the Geese in the final capture was amazing, reminded me of a couple of years ago when I witnessed them arriving on the Solway coast. Good work, cheers Keith
Thanks Keith - it was a project with highs and lows to be sure, but that's half the fun after all :)
Thanks for video love your channel will the z 7 work with old type Nikon 600 f4 I don’t have a problem with manual focus just wondering if metering exposure etc work many thanks John
Hi John, yes it should work just fine with older lenses - depending on the age of the lens you may have to set the aperture on the camera /and/ on the lens ring if not shooting wide open, but metering and exposure should be good.
You must really love Geese Geoff !!
Although to be fair I’ve got a similar thing going at the moment with Marsh Harriers !!
Thanks 😊 I do really like geese and also really enjoy a longer project!
Good luck with you marsh harriers
The majority of wildlife photographers I chat to are all feeling the same because of lockdown and rubbish weather. I can't wait to get back out in the middle of nowhere with my gear for an overnight over the border. Hope all is well mate.
Thanks Jon, yeah, it'll be good when we're able to get back out and about more freely!
Love your work, where was this ?
Thanks very much Lynn :) This was around Troon in Ayrshire
What is that falcon flying to the right at 1:40? It looks darkish but flies rather heavy.
If you mean the bird that flies right to left behind the landing geese, I'm pretty sure that's a corvid - probably a carrion crow - rather than a raptor..
@@GeoffCooper looked again and you are right. I just wanted to see a Peregine :)
@@biologyuppsala5389 me too, that would have been awesome :D
Great video Geoff, well done for being so persistent. All the best Steve.
Thanks Steve, glad you liked it!
Thanks for bringing us along! 😊
Good to have you back on the screen, well done with the vlog, this is a prime example of perseverance and the reality of wildlife photography, look forward to the next one, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it :)
Brilliant video Geoff i understand the frustration we get thousands of them here on the solway but because its such a large area to cover its not easy finding them , but on the plus side there's always somthing to capture out on the salt marshes.📸👍
Thanks Andy :) It's great when you catch up with them though and yeah, as you say, it's unusual to go out and not see anything at all...
Welcome back Geoff! As you said it's just nice be out there in nature geese or no geese. Great video!!
Thanks very much Gladys :)
