The history of African-American dance has been influential in forming many of the dance styles we know today, giving voice to many of the narratives of freedom that have shaped the landscape of America.
Modern dance, jazz, tap, swing, Lindy Hop, Charleston, hip-hop and even the waltz have all been influenced by African and African-American culture. From the days of slavery, to minstrel shows, the Harlem renaissance and modern dance pioneers, the African-American dance movement has forever impacted dance as it is created, performed and talked about across the globe. A discussion featuring Tony Award-winning tap dancer and choreographer Savion Glover. Hosted by journalist and essayist Charisse Jones.

My father came into my room and said "Are you marking popcorn ?"
I often wonder how non-tappers interpret and process everything that Savion does during these times of dance when he completely immerses himself in creativity? Just astounding artwork.
No recent comments with nearly 176K views. We are all speechless ❤
have never seen such sustained powerful dancing - superb
I just want to cry when I watch this! The artistry!
This performance just blew my mind, so amazing and this is coming from someone who has studied tap for 13 years
+Bria Parker
True, butt only 11 years
Emma Hartless me too !!!
Savion does with his FEET what most DRUMMERS can't do with TWO HANDS, TWO FEET and an entire set of drums. You have to be a DRUMMER and a DANCER to really appreciate ALL of what Savion gives not only in this set, but in all of his work. His ability to create AFRICAN and CARRIBEAN and HIP HOP RYTHMS is simply ASTOUNDING. I pray for the days when these MASTERS will be RECOGNIZED instead of the PERVERSE, VULGAR people we call ARTISTS today.
You don't have to be a drummer to appreciate it. I agree with everything else you said but as a tap dancer myself, I can DEFINITELY appreciate this.
You can TAP like that?
Did I say that? No. I said I'm a tap dancer. That doesn't mean I'm on his level. I was just saying that you don't have to be both a drummer and a dancer to appreciate his awesomeness.
I don't know you so I was just asking. TAP is an incredible expression of rhythm and musicianship to me. You MAY BE on that level. Of COURSE a fellow DANCER would understand it. I was just speaking from a RHYTHM PERSPECTIVE. Not trying to argue or anything. I appreciate you guys.
false statement.....or U probably don't be aware of drummers like john blackwell Jr.....tap dancing and drumming are two different categories
....True Art & Beauty. Magnificent Performer.
Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. Were his mentors. We need to get this back
What i wouldn't give to see Savion Glover and Bobby McFeron again! So wonderful! Cheers to such an amazing, humble, and talented artist!
🤔 I was thinking the same thing 💡
magnifique rythme , !!!!!! la France qui vous aime depuis votre plus jeune âge de Tap danseur!!!
this "understood" is like understanding what God needs rythum and sold to be! This is absolutely great! I applaud so much man!
#soul
Great.
Starting at 7:12 I saw Gregory there for a moment...
this is so beautiful and exciting...I wanna learn how to tap dance
He is amazing.
Love you Mr. Savion Glover😭😢💖😙😭😢💖😙😭😢💖😙😭💖😙
I admire Savion Gloer so much, all I want to do is have a cup of tea with him and just talk.
savion was amazing as a kid wearing his baseball cap sideways, but he has become more amazing as he gets older! He must have so much music running through his head!
I love the shoes!!! They've seen some miles!
Beautiful musician
great
save is a living legend
Super
that's one hell'va performance!!
wonderful
Super! Like listening to African drums.
I wish he could come to B'ham, AL to perform at The Alys Stephen's Center.
You're all thinking too linear...it's music composition at it's essence.
Frickin amazing.
Very impressive, especially since he did it for 15 minutes
Phenomenal and captivating. Savion is the link we have to the legends of our past and the ones still living. What Savion has done for tap is save its authenticity and it's self expression. We have seemed to have moved away from that focusing only on flashy and fast movements. The question I ask is what do you hear from the tapper? Are they communicating to you clearly? Can you understand and not be distracted from fancy moves, which are okay sometimes? Well Savion is answering my question right!
G.O.A.T.
Amazing I just got my tap dance shoes, floor. And I’m tap in to the dark without sight😎 12:36
wow he is awesome. i rremember him from sesame street
yes! I remember , too.
♪we are gonna play a rhyming game. I'll dance out words that sound like TAP.
Dude's rattling, flamming, snapping, and flapping like crazy!
OMG😎😎😎☺☺
His death scene in Bambozzeled is still the most disturbing and hardest death scene for me to watch today
Brilliant!
I am listening.
MR GLOVER YOUR TALENT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED&RESPECTED FROM THE "ELDERS"WHEN U WAS JUST A BOY,U ARE AN AMAZING TALENTED DANCER AND A FORCE TO BE RECKEND WITH!!
this is genious!
Nossa história no sapateado, obrigado Savion Glover por manter viva essa cultura!!
Tap royalty!!!! Much love and respect Savion!!!!
That made ME tired! I couldn't be a tap dancer I don't have the stamina lol
Also, wouldn't it be awesome if he put on a pedometer before the performance to see how many miles in steps he did during the tap?
The Roy Haynes of tap.
Fabulous performance. Mr. Glover is the best at his art. Question: is there some sort of amplification device on the wooden platform he is dancing on? Or is the rhythm of his taps being recorded live?
Justice J. Srisuk Yes the stage has MIC's embedded in it to catch the sound of everything.
This was a beautiful performance ❤🎉
Beautiful!
Drum solo with your feet!
In the zone
THIS IS SO GOOD
He's IMPROVISING?!?!?!?!?!?
Top level tappers almost never have choreography
it's what separates rhythm tap from theatre tap
+Katie Simpson
yes. it's the same kind of constantly generated, new flow being put out by a very intelligent speaker.
Of course some absolute Chad has to come in halfway through with his phone out and flash blinking nonstop and then proceed to climb and crawl around the audience. Jeez, such disrespect for such a legend.
damn this is great!
Good job
Oh My Goodness, Savion has produced more amazing "beats" with his feet than we've heard since the "rappers" of the late 80's early 90's that sampled the GREATS of music. "yall." you know who you are; THAT may see him as a tap dancing nigga but "He got more talent in his feet than.........." The you can call me on my cell phone BULLSHIT .
Dr. Dre, Cube. please capture this. Please bring your genius to this. Bring that early awesome vision to this. Today's music is booty booty booty and you know this "man"
Nice to listen to.
❤
Butter....such tight footwork DAYUM
he must have some weird understanding with those shoes -- they are untied and they are not budging off his feet.
delicious!
20th Century Fox @ 2:48 :-)
if i was legitimately blind , this vid. would sound like a really intense game of ping pong . lol
I think he likes to tap dance.
He probably doesn't like to tap he LOVES to tap
Happy feet.
I remember the Nicholas Brothers saying they were trying to work out how he tapped so fast! These Nicholas Brothers: ua-cam.com/video/fNKRm6H-qOU/v-deo.html
Baddddddddd!
George Clinton in ya feet !!!!!!! bring the funk................
Spell binding
Whose shoes were those?
what is this
I guess it's now Elmo's time to show him how to tie your shoelace.
How in the hell did he make that tap floor please somebody help me out.
+Dylan Cohen Looks like a solid piece of wood, elevated up on a frame? I assume it helps change the pitch of his taps depending on where he hits? Like on a drum head.
Are you related to Dylan Roof?
He is not even dancing anymore. He is literally playing a musical instrument.
why is it we must teach racism, even in college settings ? currently reading for my African american PSych text book.
