      Well, you just made my day. Hell, even my month! I adore horror from this time. It’s a peek at a cultural snapshot in history and I love the creature designs they came up with. Dear 8 had some great stories and I actually just ordered 3 more from this run and can’t wait to read and show them. Someone actually commented and said I may have missed the boat for affordable issues but the 3 I just bought were single digit issues and cost me just $43 shipped and they aren’t in awful shape so I feel it’s still our time. You may be calling to the diner table a little too late. Bronze age horror isn't as economical as it was not long ago, particularly in mid to higher grades. The DC House books, depending on the covers, are pricing themselves out of budgets in fine or above condition. Even many of those Marvel horror reprint titles that haunted quarter bins for decades are going for ten bucks or more a pop in fine. Sure, prices are nothing like those pre-code books you mentioned but relative to the supply, these comics are high, and getting higher, as well.

    Great idea and topic. I, too, wish that I could collect Pre-Code Horror, but the economic barrier of entry is too high for most of us working class stiffs. Collecting Bronze-Age Horror is a great alternative and will no doubt be the next era to be fashionable when Golden Age becomes too historically remote and financially untouchable. There are indeed a lot of good Bronze-Age horror reads (including the unmentioned Charlton line of horror anthologies and ghost comics, which I actively collect). However, I find that those Marvel Reprints of early Stan Lee Monster stories to be pretty lame, repetitive, pedestrian and not exactly my favorite, which is a shame because Marvel reprinted alot of them with some really cool covers. I think that DC's horror books at the time have better stories, although some of those are pretty uninspired as well sometimes. You should definitely give Pre-Code Horror another chance because I have read some really weird, colorful, and bizarrely imaginative stories from that era. A few years ago, IDW and YOE Books teamed-up to put out a monthly reprint series called "HAUNTED HORROR" which cherry-picked some of the weirdest & wildest Pre-Code Horror stories in their original four-colored day-glo glory. I read it every month for years, and that series is a great inexpensive alternative to collecting actual Pre-Code Horror issues. Also, the Weird Tales Pulps are fantastic reads. I went down the rabbit-hole on classic Weird Fiction Literature (one of my all-time favorite genres), and all the greats had stories debuted or reprinted in Weird Tales at some point (H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Robert W. Chambers, Arthur Machen, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Ambrose Bierce, M.P. Shiel, Frank Belknap Long, Henry Kuttner, Robert Bloch, etc). If you ever have time or the urge, check these writers out. Most of their stories can be easily consumed through public domain audio books from places like the HorrorBabble Podcast or archives like LibriVox.

    • @Moncomics
      @Moncomics 6 місяців тому +1

      Wow, a lot to digest here but I love it! I'm going to try to address your fantastic point in order. The early Marvel monster stuff to me, although containing some fun stories, is more like a lens into that time on comics and society. Growing up I was a fan of any kind of lumbering monster, or any that got my imagination running so I think I tend to focus on that. It makes me happy as a monster fan that Marvel's monsters helped the company limp along between their pre-code and hero era. I have read some stories from the witching hour, and did totally enjoy them. I've been thinking about subscribing to the DC app so I can deep dive a lot of their catalogue as I do with Marvel.
      Ok, I'm gonna let the cat out of the bag but unless people read this response, they won't know lol. I did just pick up a pre-code horror book and it's actually raw. So challenge accepted, sir. I am going to read all of the stories contained within and talk about them on the video I make regarding my pickup. I guess I should have clarified in this video that many who collect pre-code horror do it for the covers and so much of it is already slabbed that it is hard to read unless of course, you read reprints such as the ones you suggested which I will definitely look into.
      I have full intentions of reading at least one of the pulp that was gifted to me. As a fan of history as a whole, it's so fun to see how these different funny books, pulp, mediums reflected societal and cultural issues of their time. A view to a simpler place if you will. And you had me at Podcast. I literally listen to them all day long at work so I will subscribe to those two and am excited to listen!
      I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a well thought-out and informative comment. It's dialogues like these that are a big reward for being on UA-cam so thank you for that!
