For anyone asking how they do the eye thing, I'm a zoologist specializing in ornithology, I can answer this. There's two main reasons that together create the effect, and I will try to explain them both without using big science-y words. The biggest reason is that Lawes parotia birds have a very extreme form of central heterochromia, meaning they have one color on the inside of the eye, and a different color on the outside. They have two rings of color in their iris, a thick yellow ring surrounding a thinner, more reflective blue ring. If you could remove the eyeball, it would look like a dartboard; the small innermost center dot as the pupil, then the thin blue ring surrounding the center, then a much wider yellow band surrounding that. The yellow ring is typically hidden behind their eyelids, as you cannot see the sclera in birds like you can see ours. All you typically see is the pupil and the inner blue iris. When males flash their eye during a dance, they sharply constrict their pupils, causing the thick yellow ring to fill the eye, and the blue ring to become so small it just looks like part of the pupil. If you look up photos of them, in some of them you can see a bit of yellow peeking out the corner of the eye, on the very edge of the blue. The second reason has to do with the translucent quality of the blue pigment. When light hits the eye at a specific angle, the blue disappears and just looks black, making the opaque yellow pigment look much more prominent. It's very similar to one-way mirrors, or how the surface reflection of water makes it difficult to see anything beneath, even though the water is clear. But if light hits it at a certain angle, you can see past the reflective surface. When Lawes parotia males point their eye skyward, light hits the blue pigment in a way that it becomes transparent like the pupil itself, thus appearing black. Overall the effect is like, 80% the first one and 20% the second, but it's still interesting how there's more than just one thing going on that results in this really cool effect. I hope all of that made sense, I'm kinda bad at describing things in layman's terms. 😅

@@KING20007009 cant an atheist chill and not get triggered over the name God for once ?
@@KING20007009 hey smartass atheist, tell me how these birds "evolved" themselves to become like this.
@@dadwhereismymilk 😂 The answer is, no.
Sir. David Attenborough's narration added extra texture to this series.... Magnificent and extraordinary birds of paradise.... :/-/
Are you sure that bird isn't looking for a TV Signal?
I mean it probably is but to be fair a TV wasn't visible to camera crew so they can only assume it was for the other bird
Can't beat David Attenborough narration.
Another reason why I'm so excited for this! He's amazing!
Fascinating and I feel sad when I feel that human beings are destroying their own environment. As long as they do not value each other they will be responsible and accountable for what they have done to planet earth.
fgredsafew ewfr a
I have done nothing to planet earth.
"humans" no. more like a bunch of plutocratic fucks
Wow! Very impressed by that little chap. Congrats on getting the lady. And not to mention the editing, camera work, narration - kudos to planet earth team!
Bird cleaning the area before he performed so impressive! then bow when he already to started!
Aww he cleaned his house then performed for her? haha~ lucky girl~
In all of nature without a single exception the males MUST win the females over. No matter what it takes.
Did you see the end? He did it all for a chance at sex
This bird keeps a cleaner house and dances better then me...
No wonder I'm still single XD
You just haven’t found the right bird! Keep working on the dance
Not all bird's love cleanses
Honestly I was rooting for this little guy and let out a shout of joy when he succeeded 😂🎉 great shot of this incredible fascinating mating dance!
One of best ever bird video i ever see. Thank you Net Flix. The bird of paradise seems out of this world.
i remember going to this place in 2006, its in Arfak Mountain, Manokwari, Papua. you have too climb up at early dawn before reach the bird's site..and hide in a "blind", tent made of leaves. and make sure you make no sounds at all.... now, see this video as the technology of videograph is progressing, i just can say what a beautiful shot this is!
I am in awe and I am not settling for anything less going forward
This level of dedication... nature is so beautiful
Those birds are extremely amazing! So beautiful and vibrant. Love those dances.
When birds care about consent more than humans.lmao.
Such a cute bird.
Thnk you to the team
Very different
Rosa Bethany Iglarsh it wasn't. she gave consent
How did you film this?! Really appreciate your hardwork!! Thank you!
My guess is that he set up cameras and waited after he found the male preparing the place, as he knew what could/would happen
The original film is from IFIS located in a deep forest west Papua, Indonesia
It's a leaked sextape
A black bird with changing eyes: *dancing*
The female bird: *thats hot*
vadivade actually it’s a flying black skirt, who told you it was a bird?
@@ivy6406 its name is *bird* of paradise

Even i thought that is sexy
That is easily one of the most incredible things I've ever seen
at 3:30 I lliterally got goose bumps. I must have been such a bird in a past life. I'm glad she approved of his efforts and would reward him with his beautiful babies
or could it be you were amazed by God's beautiful creation that could be why
Or perhaps both 🤔
*_2:30_**_ omg his dancing can't believe nature do such awesome things better than us_* 😱
This was the most fascinating video I've ever watch. Makes me click the subscribe button
His swag, his apartment, his dance moves, his black suit, he changed his eye color just to wink at her. It was like 50 shades of grey meets great Gatsby level swagooo
Evolution cannot explain this variety, beauty, wisdom and talent! God shows His artistry and glory in everything He made.
Amen
Jenny, evolution is a big fat lie. That's why many things in nature can't be explained by evolutionists. They know it, but if they admit it, their bosses from new world satanic order kick them out from their jobs and professions, especially in sciences.
Amazing creation of God.
When a male bird get's a female bird "wet" with his dancing skills
Lol Gotta love nature
Gross
That's me trying to impress a girl after five shots of vodka!!! 😂😂😂
Probably dosent look that good tho lol
naah, you're not that good.
Fake
Haha, that's what you think you look like
bhai bhai bhai
Now I believe that in the wild this naturally produces background music.
The music was too much, I'm crying 😂
even I'm impressed, he got moves and good at chores, keeps his room clean
I don’t think anyone can dispute that that was a superb performance and a brilliant display
Bravo Bravo !!!! All praise and Glory to our Lord God almighty!!! creator of all living creatures!!!
