This has got to be one of my favorite leather crafting project videos we've made recently! This partially wet molded leather playing card case is just so classic, it feels like you walked right into the 1960's. We used nice thick vegetable tanned leather, solid brass rivets, and classic yellow waxed thread to make a leather playing card case that is sure to last generations. We also show you some of our super secret patina tricks at the end that use no dye to create a totally natural, beautiful patina on a brand new leather project. Enjoy!

Yes it is lol. If you get into leather, change out of work clothes to a clean set and be sure to scrub the crap out of your hands. It sucks transferring the oil and stuff from working with metal onto you leather. I'm bad about wiping my hands on my pants while working so that happened to me a few times. It's fun but can be time consuming in the beginning.

you used a lot of different liquids to condition this project. can you make a video of all the conditioners, paste, gum, oil etc you use and how to use them correctly? and perhaps a nice before and after look to see if that's the intended result we are looking for?

I'd use a cobblers anvil if I had one, but I don't. What I do instead when I need to set rivets like that is slide a 1.5"x3/16th tool steel bar down into the pocket. Happen to have these from when I was making knives, but I'm sure you could use plain mild steel just the same.

Good video tutorial as usual..Have you had the opportunity to experiment with oxidation techniques for patina on veg tan leather?.. Common 1st Aid Hydrogen peroxide as well as household bleach makes for a varied shade of London tan 5sec to 30sec exposure time..Followed by a good conditioning cream / oil to replace the natural oils taken out by the oxidation solutions.. Baking soda powder used in a few heaping tablespoons per 8oz of water makes a dark brown color.. all of colors can be controlled by exposure time.. a sidenote worth mentioning is bleach is rather harmful to leather and on the extreme side of what I'd personally use..A video tutorial on patina finishes would be very interesting to watch, the different techniques commonly used..

We used to rely and heavily use Aussie leather finish, but years later, it is clear that the products that we used the Aussie on showed definite and unacceptable signs of degradation. It is like the surface of the leather, what the cortex, sorry, brain not working now, but that real tight surface grain loosens from the bulky, looser grain of the flesh side of the leather. The top grain then becomes dried out appearing (cannot be revived by reapply, or reoiling), and gets wrinkly to the point of the brink of cracking. Anyone use Aussie for a number of years and experience this effect on their leather products?
