    In this video, Sean proves that balance in Brood War was achieved by accident.

    Great video.
    There is also a more recently discovered way of attacking with mutalisk which is the move-command technique. The technique is used by pressing m (move command) followed by a simultaneous press of left and right click on the target. The left should be pressed a tiny bit before to issue the move command before attacking. If done correctly and at the right distance the mutas will stop mid air and fire in place towards the target, without moving towards it, much like a mutalisk patrol attack.

    Man I wish this video existed 10 years ago. It is interesting how one man's glitch is another man's feature though. I don't think I would ever have thought clunky gameplay mechanics could add completely different dimensions to the game

      It happens in a lot of games that have their meta explored heavily over a long period of time. There's always some fun tricks behind the curtains to keep in mind. One of the best parts is discovering them, too.

  • @holden6104

    Brood War was one of those ultra rare games in which the glitches actually added massively to the game's depth. You can't replicate game design like this.

      True but there's so many examples from the late 90s early 2000s. Vanilla WoW (god bless those crazy fucking feral druids...) Mario Kart 64 (some of the jumps on Rainbow Road especially are so fun to pull off), Super Mario 64 (I'm not a speed runner but I appreciate the craft). I miss that stuff man.

    oh man I love the idea of Day[9] explaining sc broodwar's micro to, I don't know maybe his mother maybe a lady friend that's interested "i don't understand what sc broodwar's micro is", and he is like alright put a quarter in one of your two hand, and now hold your hands out, hold out your hands, Day[9] is like a future wife, right, hold her hands out the quarter one alright, Don't show me, *sigh* and then Day[9] is like "OPEN YOUR LEFT HAND" and she opens it, the quarter is in there, Day[9] is like "if the quarter was in your right hand that would have been SC broodwar's micro"

  • @Kolt461

    Battles in Brood War feel much more epic because not every army is a "deathball" clump of units that you just send straight to your enemies base. For example, as Zerg in broodwar you can really feel the swarmy-ness of their army because it is quite essential for zerg to come from all angles in brood war, so they won't die to siege tanks. In Starcraft 2, well it seems that units clump way too much and dont stay in position.

    30:45 I would favor another possibility that dragoons rather follow 'rythms' when moving : They step forward, then move the body and then step forward again. When a dragoon is trying to step forward but the other fellow dragoon has yet to take the 'body movent rythm', this one cannot move forward.

    They don't cluster because they far apart. They custer, because you click insidetheir formation "bbox". It's intended. You literaly order them to get closer together by click inside their formation. When you click outside the formation - it means "move there by preserving the formation". And it has nothing to do with the overlord being part of the bigger formation and clicking away assuming you click while uint being far away from eachother. It works just because you have unit of different move speed in the same group. There is no way to hold formation with different speed - thus the formation breaks up and units cluster. And since air units has no solid bbox - they cluster even tighter. Develop your critical thinking, please
    About pathfinding - don't you think it would be broken if you can click anywhere in the minimap black area and unit won't go there cuz the pathfinding algo (probably A* or something) knows exactly that there is no path towards where you click? That whould be very broken in terms of scounting. Imagine you click on one of potential enemy spawn and your units don't go there - why? Because there is a fucking wall up and A* knows about it since it cannot path to your click. This shit is so fucking obvious, come on...

  • @icarus0206
    @icarus0206 8 років тому

    The main thing I loved about SC was the way the units moved. It was unexpected & they didn't listen to you all the time. It was a joy micro-ing them.

    Scourge AI is very simple to understand and abuse. The scourge recalculates its interception vector once every second. Knowing that you can fool the scourge by quickly changing your movement direction just before the scourge recalculates its interception vector. There is no such thing as a Chinese Triangle trick, it is all about timing. I wish Day9 sees this :)

    Brood War... Now that's a name I've not heard in a LONG time on this channel.
    EDIT: It's nice he showed it on blizzard maps. It helped emphasize how shit they were. I think inverted ramps were a think of 2005-2006, as I remember stumbling across the archives of an SC1 mapping community was having a fuss over whether finding a way to do a map with the default map editor was more elegant and less "Cheaty" than using 3rd party map tools and inverted ramps during those years.
    There's also a couple maps that took advantage of the weird assimilator size. They were "reverse semi islands" where the game started off with units moving freely through maps, but as the game progressed you could lock out your base by destroying the neutral assimilators.

    • @KnownAsKenji
      @KnownAsKenji 8 років тому

      The custom map tools are such nostalgia. Emerald Placer, just laying down buildings in weird places or merged with each other and making some fun custom maps.
      SC1/BW had some amazing mods too, I'd recommend them to anyone curious.

    • @allonym

      It does. Magic box in SC2 is the exact opposite. It keeps units spread apart instead of clumping them together like they normally tend to.

    It's just another case of technological limits creating emergent game-play. This happened in Total Annihilation also, so many little quirks and bugs arose that would allow good players to get that little extra out of their unit control and tactics. Its just so sad that it seems the greatest days of the RTS genre are behind us. Whether that is because of the technology or just the market is up for debate.

    Reissuing the exact same command to the exact same group of units yields better results than letting them obey it... That's disturbing to contemplate. It means that the algorithm used to handle congestion creates more problems than it solves, and NEVER resorting to it, instead slamming units head-on into obstacles would've been both better... and simpler to code.

      I like how the effects and audio stand out, really. I simply love the blue flames on protoss buildings, the grid damage on units, the distinct sounds of the units and buildings. SC2 feels to clean to me.

      Sc1 terran was not cartoony - zerg were xsenomorphs, not bugs - protoss were cool and scary
