Lyrics:
We know of an ancient radiation
That haunts dismembered constellations
A faintly glimmering radio station
While Frank Sinatra sings "Stormy Weather"
The flies and spiders get along together
Cobwebs fall on an old skipping record

My mom taught music for 30 years. The last show we saw together was Cake. I miss her dearly
Sorry for your loss.
My condolences
At least she became your token pity story to share publicly on youtube. I'm sure she's looking at this down at this comment section with pride
Thank you for sharing. I am sorry you've had to undergo that loss.
Play for her.
@@guindra and why do you care?

I haven't watched it yet, but this series is already one of my favorites, along with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. And this song somehow sunk into my soul
Hats off to the. Trumpet player, those notes hit to the bone n my heart
Now that’s a hit
I've never heard a member of Cake complain about not being properly recognized for this song, and I love them even more for that, because it's fucking amazing
Was tapping my chopsticks on the lid of my pan while waiting for my dumplings to cook and just like that I heard the bassline in my head and had to play it
Glad to have higher quality audio versions of these songs on UA-cam officially now!
Exactly. And that song is so perfectly produced it deserves that quality
^
Thank you Cake for leaving the comments on. I hope you are all working on another record, “It’s Been a Long Time” since one came out. Love your music
Fking right!! All these off comments are getting sad, I thought i was tired of seeing the new years lol
if only we lived in a world where flies and spiders get along together.
That sounds like hell- also the lyrics are referencing politicians and ceos making rotten deals behind the scenes.
And cobwebs land on a skipping record
@@WelcomeToDERPLAND nah, the lyrics are referencing flies and spiders lol
I just discovered this band today listening to SiriusXM’s Lithium Channel. Love their music!
Not only are they amazing musicians, but they are extremely tasteful and choose to play the most beautiful notes. The keyboard solo is perfect. I love the way it sounds.
I discovered this song and band as a pained child dealing with a narcissistic aunt who partially raised me. Goddamn this music changed my life. I'm now 32.
I'm 55 and yeo a great band
May God always bless you, your family, your loved ones
Love the horns. Ennio-Morricone-esque.
Cake sings it and sounds it and plays it like no other band ever. Originals all the way. Omg!
We saw these guys in Eugene, OR last night and they ROCKED IT! Best show I’ve been to in a long time! Thank you CAKE! 🍻👏🏻
Cake could win ALL the awards, and still be underrated.
My dad introduced me to this band when I was younger, heard this song in the Sopranos and now I'm back.
👌👌👌
My cousin and I would always sing this song together. I lost him few years ago. I love you Edward until we meet again❤
A song that never gets old. Timeless.
Timeless Alternative Rock Song...
Back in college, this song kicked off every single one of my broadcasts.

[Verse 1]
Beyond the suns that guard this roost
Beyond your flowers of flaming truths
Beyond your latest ad campaigns
An old man sits collecting stamps
In a room all filled with Chinese lamps
He saves what others throw away
He says that he'll be rich someday

Seen these guys for free in Atlanta when I was 17. They put on a great show and played about 30 mins extra. Will always be one of my favs
Really miss the 90’s
I was a line cook at a resort for several years, Cake was my audio go-to almost every day. I'm sure the other guys are still traumatized my the mere mention of either comfort OR eagles
One of my favorite songs as a kid, so glad the line about flies and spiders came to me one day and reawakened my love for this bop
Saw them live and They opened with this
This band is brilliant
I love Greg Brown's guitar playing. Even the guitarists that replaced him played in his style or played his parts.
When you see your name in the paper
:v
This makes me wanna go to the news stand and get an armful of news papers for a quarter
Knowing the Cake was in 1990’s the 1990’s had a very different style.But,B-52’s Cake and a few other people had this taste in music,This is a real beat to!(I changed it to my ringtone-)
They opened their show in indy with this. First time I saw them live. It's one of mine and my dad's favorite bands. So awesome to see them in person. Sounds just like they did back then
Saw them live in 2011. I wanted so bad for them to play this song, but they had a different set planned. They did like 5 encores though.
This just made my day, one of my very favorite songs of life

Just watched this episode the other night and here I am, in my cake arc
no words, just appreciation. the best.
Love the band. Never heard this song before. Rewatching Sopranos and recognised the voice. Absolute belter. Don't know how I missed it. Cake has been a big inspiration on my songwriting. Releasing my first album this year and I'll be touring in the summer. They'll always be what I listen to when i need to shake of the anxiety and depression before stepping out the door. Much love, guys. Thank you.
Wow, heard this first on Sopranos. In the 90s! Was it that long ago?? But it still sounds so current and GOOD
One of my favorite band of all time
Bought the album 20 yrs ago and I'm Aussie and love it
I never get tired of this song 💛
Me either. Ever
one of my all time favorite songs/bands
This song has helped me get through some of the toughest times in my life... love it :)

Underrated af song.
Always come back to this one. Such visual story telling and a great trance-like feeling.
Why would you EVER listen to The Distance EVER AGAIN when SONGS LIKE THIS EXIST!?
I forgot how much I loved this back when it came out in 1996
SUCH A PERFECT SONG!!!!!
agree
Watching The Sopranos for the first time and I just had to listen to the full song after that amazing ending scene with Christopher seeing his name in the newspapers.
Heard one of your songs on Shameless. Amazing, underrated
This song was _the song_ stuck in my head for the majority of the 90's (and some time afterwards). This song really hits you in the feels.
Thank you for shaping my youth i hope you may influence generations to come.

I see that you're a creature of culture yourself... Good on this sophisticated comment section.
Reminder that this song received regular alternative rock radio airplay in 1997-1998. Such were the days. There's still plenty of good music being made, but it ain't on the radio. The early-mid 90s were a special time. Post-Nirvana, they were just throwing stuff at the wall to see what would stick, and it was great.
2:53 goes so hard for some reason
Great to have it! Thank you CAKE! ;)
Loved this band on family road trips 🤣 and playing quake/unreal in 2003.
This song makes me so sad. It’s like dropping a loved one off at the airport knowing that you won’t see them for a while 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
that empty feeling you have while you drive away with tears in your eyes and lump in your throat getting back onto the freeway…..
Okay, I’m better now 🥰
I just saw my cousin again for the last time, going up the escalator at the airport and I looked back at the top and he was still standing there at the bottom looking at me and he waved
Just listen
Love the horn sound of their songs
On of my favourite parts
Lots of fond memories here. Thanks Cake.
Probably the greatest band from the 90s, that you never heard of.
What do you mean "that you never heard of."
Do you have any idea how popular The Distance actually is
I was like..9 when I bought this album , still love it
Took me forever to find this song when I heard it at the end of the sopranos. Song is fire

This was one of my favorite songs as a kid, it really feels like something else
I hate it so much, because I Iove it so much but nothing else makes me feel quite like it and I can't explain it
Bought this cd when it came out and Diablo1. So every time I hear cake, i think if old Tristram and the dungeons 😂
That metronomy esque outro 😍
This song is incredibly beautiful.
This song actually gets me emotional...I'm not sure why...It's true art...I think that's why...
