- The car was running pretty rough under load and I'm glad I could find the problem with relative ease. The car is running super strong now with the timing all fixed!

Missing 3rd and shifting to 5th is a symptom of bad motor mounts, change those and it’ll be better
Also, the bushing on the bottom of the shifter could be worn out too, maybe do a shifter rebuild

Next big things I would look at would be replacing that OEM radiator and putting in a coolant reroute.
The plastic OEM radiator tends to get brittle and let go, especially with the added heat of a turbo.
Originally the B6 and BP engines were designed for a FWD application, but when Mazda put them in the Miata they moved the coolant neck from the back of the head to the front. This results in less than ideal coolant flow and the rear cylinders will run hotter than the front. The reroute kits will move the coolant neck to the back of the head and then run into the radiator, improving the cooling.
Excited to see how this progresses, I'm currently building a turbo NB track car in my garage!

Bro thank you for that crank seal comparison ! I pulled my motor out to do a compelte reseal. And the crank went in a little too easy and I was iffy non stop thinking about it and found your video and boom ! I have the long nose 1.6 so most likely I got the wrong seal in the kit I got ! Thanks again. Deff subbed

You don't technically need the mark on the crankshaft gear to time the engine though it does help. Just put a long screwdriver down cylinder #1 and spin the engine until the screwdriver is exactly as high as it can go, putting cylinder #1 at TDC. Then line up the intake and exhaust cam gear notches with the metal back plate and when you get the belt on count 19 teeth on the belt between the notches on the cam gears that point straight up. At 10:03 you can see there is 20 teeth between the top notches on the cam gears, so yeah your timing was off by 1 tooth. And no, 37:28 Miata belts aren't usually like that XD. That smoke at 39:40 is probably just from the crappy turbo with that bad shaft play. Replace the turbo and it should be ok.

Yo man congrats on joining the Miata gang. I think you need motor mounts from how much your engine moves when starting and missing shifts. I need to do mine too lol.
Also you really shouldn’t turn the engine counterclockwise.

After all this, only the rear main and the oil pan gaskets can be the leaky bois, if not the trans. Love to see the smiles this brings, but owner definitely didnt prepare anything for the turbo, stock valve cover breather system, stock coolant route, probably stock engine mounts and diff arms too.

Check if your intercooler has oil inside of it. It could be sucking some from inside the intercooler when under boost?
if u plan on keeping the car I’d recommend doing a coolant reroute, I know flying Miata sells a kit!
It's normal for the alternator belt to be a pain to put on w/ Miatas haha. Also make sure you crank down the bolt on the bottom of the alternator so it can't pivot and throw belts
Should probably use rubber bushing around the hardware for intercooler/piping so it has a little bit of flex when engine is under load, otherwise you'll keep snapping brackets like that lower one did.

That smoke is prob the turbo seals going out. Looks 1 on 1 like the symptoms when I had a turbo'ed car. You can easily take the turbo off and check both housings for oil

You mind turning the bitrate for the sound up a lil bit cuz it sounds kinda bad/compressed. Just a heads up.
at 27:30 what was holding the crank still? it looks as if it was pushing the cylinders up onto the valve unless there was something locking the crank in place. could have bent the valves.
Should invest in a plastic bristle brush that hooks up to a drill or a die grinder to remove gasket/old seal material
you use distilled water to mix antifreeze?
plastic scraper on that cam cap, brazzer.
easy way to know if your crank is at tdc is to place a screwdriver or a wood dowel inside cyl#1 spark plug and then crank it over. once it reaches the very top and before it starts dropping again, you're at tdc.
the smoke puff could be your oil return, give it a look.
Could there be a lot of excess pressure inside the engine causing premature failure on oil seals
what slave cylinder do you run ? i have a s50 with a zf 5 speed from an e46 and twin disk dkm clutch and keep going through slave cylinders every few months. my clutch pedal bites at the very bottom and I don’t know if that’s normal i think i have the wrong slave or master or something i was wondering if you could have any info for me

Maybe it's just the turbo causing the smoke, you should rebuild or replace it
If I do recall correctly, in the previous video there was a little bit of wiggle in turbo so you might be right about that one.
Edit: Took a quick look and yeah, turbo looks kind of wonky.

The timing might stil be off, because of the cam dowels having that much play. You have the gears timed but the cams might not be

Idk if this would work but next time for something like the crank seal, put the new seal in a freezer for like 30 mins - an hour and it’ll contract making it easier to install.
