I just landed an apprenticeship today and this truthfully reduced a lot of anxiety. Knowing what to expect and how to protect myself during great opportunity means a lot to me. I appreciate your transparent content.
Thank you for this! Ever since my first professional piercing when I was 14, I have been hooked ever since. It has been my dream to be a piercer and I know one day I can get an apprenticeship! These tips and info are very helpful.
There should be a certificate program or some sort of basic degree one could train for if local apprenticeships are not available....even if some of the coursework can only be done by distance learning. At least if someone can complete that, they will be more attractive to local studios, who may want to take them more seriously as an apprentice
its definitely tricky as there are piercers in my area, but NONE are APP certified. The only one "close" is 1.5 hours away. I don't plan on moving just yet, so I'm enrolling in esthetician school for now. Maybe once i move in the future i can find a quality studio I'd enjoy
I knew I wanted to pierce since I was about 16. when I first started getting them. I was an apprentice in NJ in September of 2020. I was a client of this person for about 11 years- since they opened as a tatoo shop so since I was a great client of theirs I got an apprentice. I didnt pay for it , never signed a contract, was never sexually abused during my apprenticeship, but wasnt paid for the first two months. Unfortunately I realized I didn't have the best apprenticeship. I moved to vegas and worked as a piercer for 1 year. I'm going to start my second apprenticeship at another shop that uses quality body jewelry. I'm really excited to start!
You’re amazing Lynn I look up to you so much and you have so much wisdom and understanding in this community. Thank you for being an advocate for apprentices in this community and giving people advice
I would love to see more videos about apprenticeship, your videos are very interesting and your passion for piercing has made me very passionate about it too! By the way, I love your stretchers so much!
Thank you for making this video. You answered so many questions I had and didn't know how to express or if it was important to say. This is also a great video to use to explain to my boyfriend why I couldn't just call up shops and ask for job. Thank you so much Lynn.
Talking about media you can use to learn or to consume if you're super interested, I was actually talking to my piercer and two other folks from the studio about your blog! One of them mentioned really loving your blog and I can only agree.
This has been extremely helpful as I just applied to my second apprenticeship at the same shop! Really hoping I can use this and stand out more in the future
thank you so much for this video!! its answered a lot of my questions in one convenient 40 minute package. i am curious, though, if you would advise searching for an appreticeship while in college? i turn 18 and go to college in a few months and have wanted to pursue body piercing since i was very young, but the knowledge that apprenticeships entailed years of unpaid labor has always ruled that option out for me. now that more apprenticeships are paid, though, ive been considering searching for one while im taking college classes. is this doable/advisable, or is this a terrible idea?
I think it would depend on your course load/transportation/schedule/etc. it could work in some situations but be careful not to overwork yourself or burn out. That said I dropped out of college for my apprenticeship and I have 0 regrets. 😝
I’ve been thinking about piercing for such a long time, but I’m nearly thirty and it feels like it’s too late for me. Especially since I haven’t had stable employment for the past couple of years (damn the pandemic) thank you for doing this work for free! I just saw today that you’re piercing at a studio local to me, and I want to come in and pick your brain some more.
I hope you went for it or in the process! As long as you’re breathing you can make it possible. Make those connections, take a breathe and ask questions! Always be curious…They’ll have the answers and if there isn’t then YOU get to decide how comfortable you are investing into them.
In my town a lot of apprentices don’t get paid and get hazed often. Which is something I didn’t like when I started apprenticing. I ended up having to quit my apprenticeship because I couldn’t afford to live and apprentice at the same time.
This might be a silly question but do you know any creators that talk about tattooing as in depth as you do piercing? I've been wanting to get a tattoo apprenticeship for such a long time and even though it's not your specialty I've learned so much from not only this video but from you in general
I don’t know if you’ll see this but I would really like to know the best way to approach a piercer, I want to be respectful and make sure I have the opportunity to really show how passionate I am about become a piercer. I have a few piercers who I love and have the qualities I’m looking for and have been clients for a long time. No cold calling makes total sense, but I am unsure the etiquette of inquiring in person 😅 thank you so much for this video, it was really informative and all your content has helped me learn so much :)
Thank you for the information! I have always loved piercings but recently thought about becoming a piercer. This video was very informative on the process and what to expect with becoming an apprentice. I currently work in the medical field as an x-ray tech in a hospital and have been trained in CPR and blood borne pathogens through my job. Would those be classes I would have to retake through other organizations before deciding on an apprenticeship?
This is all really good Information and I really want to be a professional piercer ive had passion for this since I was like 16 I have 4-5 years of personal experience by now doing piercings and really want to get serious about it. I am debilitatingly bad at talking with people i dont know though and i dont trust other people to pierce me so trying to get in the industry by this method seems impossible
A huge part of our job as piercers is talking to other people. We talk to literally hundreds of strengths every week- and more then that we need to make total strangers feel comfortable with us, trust us, and be vulnerable with us. You can have all the passion for piercing in the world but if you don’t want to interact with people you won’t make a great piercer. You may however find your calling in this industry making jewelry or working for a body jewelry company! You can still have all your piercings and be yourself- without all the human interaction of being a piercer.
Only APP certified piercer in the state is a 3 hour drive one way and I haven't even been there. But theres probably 50 other shops in the state offering "professional piercing". The money isn't even there around here. I think we have one shop rent a space out at a strip mall here and come and do tattoos for a week then head back to their main shop.
back when i was interested in a career in body piercing in the sf bay area i couldn't find a studio that wasn't part to play (this was >20y ago and around $10k in early 2000s $$$). i didn't have the $ at the time so i ended up going to nursing school instead. it all worked out but sometimes i wonder how my life would have been different if i was able to find a piercing apprenticeship.
@Lynn Loheide So I landed an apprenticeship today and they aren't willing to pay me but it's my only way to learn and it's a nice reputable studio where there are plenty of people probably willing to take on a pay free apprenticeship so if I say anything about the Fitzgerald act they will probably tell me to kick rocks. What should I do?
In my opinion any studio that is nice and reputable is going to pay you a living wage and not break the law and exploit your labor. /Reputable/ studios don’t condone labor exploitation.
I'm a former phlebotomist (still certified, its just been a minute since I've had a job as one) so I'm familiar working with blood and other bodily fluids on the daily. Would this kind of experience help get my foot in the door as an apprentice?
I think part of the reason why people sort of “fear” going to their piercer is unfortunately a lot of them have a paywall of sorts, they dont want to waste their time OR they dont want to hurt their feelings! Ik those are all the reasons i didnt ask my piercer questions about work that they did that didnt feel right
I have like all of the piercings I already want so I don’t know how to go in and get more to build relationships with piercers when I already have all the piercings I want😭😭 I could maybe go into places for jewelry changes? Idk ahahah
I’m curious to know where you learned that apprentices are meant to be paid? I live is Las Vegas & have recently been going around & reaching out to different shops for a piercing apprenticeship & it’s very common for them to be unpaid. In fact, I don’t think I’ve encountered a single one that would pay an apprentice. Am I just applying to the wrong places?? Even blogs and articles online say most apprenticeships are unpaid.

You are correct- this is entirely the wrong way to go about getting into the industry. You can not properly learn things online especially as much of piercing is tactile- having a mentor show you how to manipulate the tissue, feel for proper placement, understand proper angles through the tissue. Imagine if someone said “there’s no good medical schools in my town but I want to be a doctor! I think I’m going to watch videos of surgery online and practice at home and learn to be a doctor that way”. We would tell them to relocate to get properly educated. Piercing is the same way. WV is not a terrible far drive from six16 and hot rod in Pittsburg, evolved in Columbus, brilliance, Freya, infinite, and fidelity. You have a bunch of amazing studios within driving distance that you could go to and potentially try to get an apprenticeship with. There are people who live in entire countries without good piercers who move /out of their country/ to learn properly. I moved from Philly to florida to learn correctly. I have peers who have relocated from Idaho to California and from florida to Nashville to learn. The fact that you are in an area with dozens of amazing piercers within 2-5 hours of you but that’s not close enough for you to want to learn correctly is shameful- and your clients deserve better.
So, I’ve just moved to a small navy town that only has 5 shops, all of which have very good reviews on piercers. I also already have all my piercings done (11 facial) so how should I go about asking about apprenticeships?
maybe you should go around and scope out the shop, look at jewelry and sterilization and how they operate to really see if they're good piercers since tbh lots of people getting piercings don't know what a good piercer consists of. it's hard to get one and a lot of people have to move
What if you can’t find a apprenticeship? Are there books that you recommend? Do you recommend practicing anyway while you wait? Sorry if you touched on this already.
Continue looking for an apprenticeship! It took me about 3 years to find mine! In the meantime I worked on my photography and graphic design skills and taught myself more about piercing history. Doctors who don’t match to a residency right away don’t start practicing open heart surgery while they wait. They are patient and continue educating themselves while they wait.
I’m physically disabled and I’ve been worried about finding an apprenticeship that can accommodate my needs. Is there room in the industry for someone who isn’t fully able bodied?
I made the mistake of cold calling because my body heals so slow I cannot sustain too many piercings or none of them will heal, could I have ruined my chances?
Hey I’ve got a question. If you apprentice under one piercer but they don’t do certain piercings would you be able to go apprentice under a different piercer to learn those other piercings after you finish the first apprenticeship? If that makes sense
Yea! Usually folks will go to other studios to work as a junior piercer or work under another piercer who can teach them the other skills. For example I learned new surface piercing techniques when I worked with Ian at icon.
this might be a stupid question, but is there any stigma around older people starting out in the industry? i see so many piercers saying they started their apprenticeship at 18, im 19 right now and im not in a position where id be ready to start an apprenticeship, and i just worry that starting out in my 20s may be seen as negative and affect my chances of getting an apprenticeship
Good video. I realized during watching this video that I’m actually not passionate enough about piercings to pursue a career in it. Snake bites are dope but other than that I have little to no interest in them.
Have you heard of Master Tattoo institute ? I am doing their body piercing course and they are funded by the board of eduacation supposedly because their rate of getting their students jobs is pretty high. Do you think it’s a good idea to start with that route ?
When I worked in florida we fixed SO MUCH of their work. Low quality jewelry. Bad angles. Terrible placement. :( folks who took the classes said they never reviewed concepts like bevel theory or wound shaping. I wouldn’t waste your money.
Anybody know if being a body piercer would be a good job to do while going to college? Or is it always more of a full time deal? (I’m currently in high school just curious)
few studios take people as apprentices in china, most of them only offer five to seven day long courses and then find you several people to practice on then you are pretty much on your own, and its expensive... they actually take hygiene very seriously but only a few days practicing with plastic models cant be enough, can it...
That was me for the first 4 years of my career! I networked, talked to studios, saved up money to relocate, and eventually ended up with an apprenticeship. Much like doctors who need to find a residency to become a doctor, sometimes it talks folks a while to find a good fit for your training.
I thought piercing apprenticeships take 6 months to 1 year? I live in NYC and It said the requirement is 6 months to 1 year is it different for every state ?
@@Lynn_Loheide I actually want to become a tattoo artist . I want to get into piercing to help me get through a tattoo apprenticeship , and it will teach me how an apprenticeship works it will help get my foot into the industry. It can also help benefit me with getting clients for when I start tattooing. I don’t want piercing to be a long term career I’m 21 years old and don’t want to get a tattoo apprenticeship at 25 I would be tattooing at 32 and I would be considered too old to start tattooing. It’s hard enough to get into the tattoo industry and piercing industry .
@@lesliecartagena1292 if you want to be a tattoo artist then focus on getting a tattoo apprenticeship. Practice line works, color theory, composition. Not only would you waste time learning piercing skills that will not translate to tattooing- you insult piercing by doing this. Piercing is it’s -own- career path. It’s not a stepping stone to tattooing.
Unfortunately no, you need to be 18 to apprentice! Partially because studios work around unclothed bodies but primarily because studios handle blood and bodily fluids- you need to be 18 to work around these things and take those risks.
Thank you so so much Lynn 🫶🏻 This video is full of amazing information! I have been wanting to get into the industry for quite sometime now and I am so glad I found your video!

Anybody know if being a body piercer would be a good job to do while going to college? Or is it always more of a full time deal? (I’m currently in high school just curious)
It is for sure more full time. I had to drop out of college to focus on my apprenticeship!
few studios take people as apprentices in china, most of them only offer five to seven day long courses and then find you several people to practice on then you are pretty much on your own, and its expensive... they actually take hygiene very seriously but only a few days practicing with plastic models cant be enough, can it...
do apprenticeships give you your piercing license?
Whats your favorite movie about piercings?
Modify, hands down. Hellraiser also has a special place for me!
@@Lynn_Loheide love pinhead he nice looking
Thank you for this video, I'm starting to look for an apprenticeship. I just got my blood born pathogens cert, and CPR card
Now, what about the people that cannot find someone who will take them on as an apprentice? Can we still pursue a body piercing career?
That was me for the first 4 years of my career! I networked, talked to studios, saved up money to relocate, and eventually ended up with an apprenticeship. Much like doctors who need to find a residency to become a doctor, sometimes it talks folks a while to find a good fit for your training.
Your the bees knees 🐝
I thought piercing apprenticeships take 6 months to 1 year? I live in NYC and It said the requirement is 6 months to 1 year is it different for every state ?
6 months is way too fast for an actual comprehensive apprenticeship. A good quality apprenticeship is going to be 1-4 years for sure.
It’s not a stepping stone to tattooing.
i’m attending fakir and i dont here that many people talking about it what’s ur opinion on it
Check the latest video I just posted. ;) but watch the whole thing cause I deep dive in fakir in that
I am currently 14 can I still get an apprenticeship
Unfortunately no, you need to be 18 to apprentice! Partially because studios work around unclothed bodies but primarily because studios handle blood and bodily fluids- you need to be 18 to work around these things and take those risks.

Thank you so so much Lynn 🫶🏻 This video is full of amazing information! I have been wanting to get into the industry for quite sometime now and I am so glad I found your video!
