  • "Songs, jokes and stories at the seaside with Mike Amatt and his shaggy Old English sheepdog.
Mike tells the story of Blackhearted Walter and his flea-bitten parrot, and Mop joins in a game of beach bagatelle with the children of Friarage County Primary School."
    (Radio Times)
Recorded at Scarborough, Yorks. Mostly on the beach, but also includes Hispaniola, the miniature galleon in operation between 1949 to 1993 at Scarborough Mere (then a popular tourist attraction, now a fishing lake).
A BBC Manchester production, first shown on Monday 12th August 1985 at 4.20pm on BBC1. (This recording is from the repeat showing the following year).
Written and presented by Mike Amatt, who also created Mop & Smiff which was first broadcast in the same year. He later became a Play School presenter, then wrote and created Forget-Me-Not Farm.
    Assistant Producer: Sid Waddell
    Producer: Diane Campbell
This recording is from the personal archive of my friend Mike Amatt who passed away recently. I have uploaded this on 31st August 2021, which would have been his 72nd birthday.
If you'd like to make a contribution to a worthy cause that Mike supported, then please choose either the British Heart Foundation or a reputable children's charity in your country.

Love this lad's approach to pitching TV programmes. "I've got a cat and a dog." "I'd like to have a day on the beach." And they went for it. Brilliant.

I was very sad to hear Mike had died. I remember Mop and Smiff quite well, but I hadn't heard of Mike Mop and the Moke until more recently. I remember reading an interview with Mike a few years ago when he said Mop and Smiff both lived to be 14 and sadly died within two weeks of each other
