    At 71 I can't swing a wrench like I use to, I worked at a car dealership and had a agreement with the used car manager, to buy cars taken in as trades that he didn't want to deal with usually 8 to 10 a year I'd fix them and flip them, now unable to do that I, and am sure like many others I live vicariously watching others, Matt's channel is my favorite.

    Cat made a 920 model wheel loader at one time.....don't know when it was. It was an articulated machine and looked to be slightly larger than your 922. When I was a young teenager, I worked at a feedlot and we had a 920 setting in the weeds that didn't run and 930 that I ran daily loading feed trucks and also had a 950 that we used to clean pens and push manure with. They are good machines and when your 922 started up, it sounded just like the 920 & 950. Thanks for saving this one.

    They run a Timken Taper bearing top and bottom of the knuckle, for the rear steer to pivot on. Good chance those bearings have collapsed. Been a while since we repaired ours, but think you have to pull the outer planetary hub off, then remove the driveshaft and pull the knuckle, so you can punch out the cone. The Rolling element can be replaced by undoing the external bolts. There's shims to set the drag right. Big rubber seal that goes on the knuckle, wipes the back of the 'ball' to keep the crap out. Ours has been pretty abused and also has a good bend in the drag link from the box to the rear bell crank. The outer tie-rods are exxy from CAT (ours is a 944) so you may have to substitute something there.

    Hey Matt - love all your videos. No worries about buying more stuff, but I will say that it is far more compelling when you are able to take something that was dead and make it completely useful again, even if that means selling it to someone else who gets the benefit of your genius. In the early days of your channel it was clear that what you bought have a real purpose and filled a need you had, or produced some $$ for other projects - that was cool. Seeing something sitting get started to just end up sitting at your place without any real purpose is neat, just not as compelling to me. Not complaining, just giving you some feedback from a long time fan! Keep up the great work.

    Matt. I had forgotten something negative about the 3850 ( I might have previously told you this). The motor and transmission were fantastic. Extremely powerful for a small loader with difficulty keeping the tires from spinning, BUT the design of the lift arms to the machine was not spot on as in the angle was strange. It would dig in to easy and trying to counter the bucket position would over compensate causing a porpoise effect. I never had this problem with the 966 or 645, 745 or 644. Only the 3850 and after talking to other owners they complained about the same issue. The machine was a fast hard working loader but try to make an occasional flat grade you would find your self back dragging which was not the prettiest.
    Also the 3200 skid steer had issues not only with the V4 Wisconsin motor it to had difficulty obtaining a flat grade when used as a machine to make grade.

    Matt, you're a graveyard junkie. You salvage some cool stuff. Cat loader,ok. And Carter Schnabel spent 10 million on a new cat D11 dozer to push dirt up in the Yukon to mine gold with. Always nice when they fire up and you jump up and down like a little kid you're so happy. Just like I do. Its a great feeling to bring these behemoths back to life.

    Introduced in 1960, the No.922 Traxcavator was the second Caterpillar wheel loader to be released for sale (the first was the No. 944). Caterpillar initially offered a choice of either a petrol or diesel engine for the No.922. Customers could choose between an 80 horsepower Continental M330 six-cylinder petrol engine and a Caterpillar D320 four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel, also rated at 80 horsepower. Most customers chose the diesel and the petrol option was withdrawn quite early in the machine’s production run.
    A two speed powershift transmission with a high and low range shifter and separate forward and reverse controls made up the rest of the powertrain.
    Later, during 1965 the engine was changed to a turbocharged model D330T, still rated at 80 horsepower

      @davidhosticka 9 місяців тому

      I had both a 922b and a 944a. The 922b had the turbo D330T and I thought it was a little under powered, but the 944a, which also had a larger 4 cylinder turbo diesel was a powerful monster!

      Not really the smallest Cat wheel loader as Matt said, there was the Cat 910 and 920 introduced later (standard articulated machines). At the time though, the 922 was the smallest in the Cat lineup when introduced.

    • @l0jack
      @l0jack 9 місяців тому +1

      Cat traxcavators were as the name implies tracked loaders not wheel loaders. There was the 933, 951, 955 and 977 and letter derivations thereof. Then cat moved to the rear engine track loaders. I ran a 955k while working construction in college. It was a beast for a 4 cylinder turbo machine.

    • @TheSubatomicCheese
      @TheSubatomicCheese 9 місяців тому +1

      @@l0jackeven though you are technically correct, Cat marketed the early wheeled loaders as "Traxcavators" too. There's Cat manuals out there calling them the "Caterpillar 922 Traxcavator"
      There's also manuals out there that use "Cat 977A Bulldozer" too, so there were some naming inconsistencies in earlier Cat model years.

    • @richardmead9225
      @richardmead9225 9 місяців тому +1

      @@l0jack The Traxcavator name was a direct reference to the Trackson Company of Milwaukee who Caterpillar had bought out in 1951 to obtain its loader technology.

    You got the holy grail of options with that one! The boom extensions look like they’re the standard because they’re so well designed but trust me the standard design was to lift into short/low trucks or hoppers only! Steering box might be your biggest expense but yours still has the cap on the center of the steering wheel so it shouldn’t be full of water and dirt. I’ve resurrected the steering in both a 922 and a 944 but both of them had no canopy and no cap on steering wheel so the hollow shaft was catching rain water and channeling it into steering box.

    20:43 hey matt the levers on the left side of the seat are for 4wd or 2 wd the lever on the bottom is for 2wd and 4wd the other one is high and low they are definitely definitely a handful but they can dig and push

    • @jimrankin2583
      @jimrankin2583 9 місяців тому

      The 4WD is low range and 2WD is high range stop to shift the transfer case. Then the other lever is the powershift two speed. It should always drop out of engagement when engine stops and must be pulled back into speed 1or 2 whereupon it will stay engaged until you stop engine again. Select neutral on F-N-R beside steering wheel and set parking brake before getting off. Can also put transfer case in neutral but the torque converters are so loose that they don’t lurch and start rolling if you bump the reverser lever into F or R unless engine was revved up maybe.
      Not like a Deere! No torque converters on those. You bump the reverser, it’s going so always select a neutral some other way on a Deere! Don’t rely on the reverser!
