Finally someone has included options in a depreciation analysis. I’ve always thought the reported resale values were overstated as they simply ignore the swag of options the purchaser also forked out for 👍
(a neat trick by manufacturers really)
Thank you, Merry Christmas, Matthew
You never get back as much for the options as you do for the base car. Options are a money pit as they are rarely desired by the buyer who comes along. Yes, nappa leather is nice but 14 grand!! When I see a car I do not think, I must pay 5 grand more because the last owner had nappa, I just think, 'one point more than the one next to it that has buffalo skin". it may sway me to buy it but not pay more for it.
There’ll be some even worse depreciatiors in the future, once you get these luxury cars with complicated hybrid power trains that need £20k+ new batteries etc.
It will probably be more than 20k for a battery just because it's a Bentley or Rolls. Heck a McLaren P1 battery is 200k
Electric vehicles are rubbish!
No, the reason these cost appreciate so much is that people are buying electric and hybrid cars. Even with a battery change you gotta remember it's so Cheap to own electric cars without gasoline costs.
@@dvlarry It is apparently cheaper to run a diesel now than an EV based on the charging costs.
Not true for Lexus.....
I’ve found, on three occasions, an excellent way to retain value is to buy the outgoing model after its replacement has been on the market a year or two. It’s worked for me on a Range Rover, 997.2 and Touareg. My brother had the same experience with his 355.
Sounds like an interesting strategy.
Nice one, guys. I knew that the depreciation on cars is steep, but that this in some cases is 60 percent in the second year is eye watering.
It sure is
It shows how wealthy the people who buy them must be. They know they are throwing all that cash away.
In reality, I don't believe those with millions and billions are rushing out to purchase any of these uber expensive money pits. These are more likely being purchased by those who want to look like they are rich. 3:41
Loved the first episode can’t wait to sit down and watch this. Merry Christmas lads, thanks for all the hard work this year.
Where are the Maseratis? Quatroporte. Levante. Surely those would make the S-Class seem like a safe investment?
It’s a good point - maybe a sequel
@@TheCarGuysTV Please include Americans too.
Happy Christmas chaps ,great channel, looking forward to more car guys stuff next year 👍
Disappointed that my Jag didn’t make the list but then realised they don’t make the XJ anymore 😅
Merry Christmas chaps. The channel has gone from strength to strength this year and I really appreciate all the effort that goes into producing the content. Best wishes for 2023
I love you, John.
Love these episodes.
There is something to be said for grabbing a 2nd hand bargain luxury performance car after someone else has taken those big depreciation hits.
Have a great Christmas guys.
Exactly. You too, Peter
Agreed. Once a model is perceived as being out of date, which can happen inside a year, the price for which it can be obtained on the used market is astonishingly low. If you are buying German you get fantastic engineering. But there is a big caveat: high operating costs and low post-warranty reliability mean that the second owner also ends up spending far more than they intended. Forget about third-party warranties: only the manufacturer’s extended warranty is acknowledged by the service departments who have the resources in staff and parts access to look after these cars.
Lovely to see Jason again!!
Merry Christmas and well done with all the content this year 🎉
Cheers, sweetheart

First time on the site. Great video. Thanks for Texas, USA
Welcome!
50% in 6 months on a 7series, admittedly in 2019. That’s from List Price which of course nobody ever pays. I bought it from the dealer just prior to its 6month birthday, it was their car and only 2.5k miles. Not sure any other marque/model loses so much. -70k in six months. -30k in the 4years since. Depreciation isn’t always bad :-)
Yes your spot on with your comments and thoughts excellent job reviewing all these cars 👍
👍🏻👍🏻
Love these episodes Including the one with super cars. The camaraderie, , brutal honesty, humor ate just so good.
@TheCarGuys_Tv SCAMMER, Fake profile
I love my 2022 Bentayga...Looks like I might as well hold onto it forever. sigh.
Great episode, here in West Coast USA these cars do not depreciate as much, we are lucky.
Not lucky if you're in the market for used cars
I just sold a modern RR Ghost. Owned it for 12 months and sold it for exactly the same as I paid for it.
From new?
@@TheCarGuysTV No, it was a 2011. This is the beauty of letting someone wealthy suffer the depreciation.
@@BibtheBoulder You’re a winner for sure. I didn’t think the Ghost had been out that long
@@TheCarGuysTVI took my pension last year (didn't retire) and I recalled Tif Needell many years ago talking about running a RR for 12 months cost-free. Well, having taken my lump sum, I pondered what to do with it, and decided one last hurrah of a nice car was the way to go. So I ended up with a 2011 Ghost. Incredible machine in every way, and don't regret a bit what I did.
@@BibtheBoulder 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
If you’re like me , buying used , depreciation is your best friend … I just recently bought my dream car , S class Mercedes S550 , I got 2015 with 80K miles , one owner retired elderly couple , looks and runs like new … about $130,000 new , paid $29,000 for it 😊…. love me some good depreciation …
Very thorough, very thorough 👏
I don't like SUVs so seeing a program on how much they depreciate really made my Christmas .. ho ho ho ...
Enjoyed all your vids over the year guys, keep up the good work.
Thanks, Andrew
Brilliant stuff
The G Wagon is hot news for export to the far as is the Urus. The first batch of the new Range Rover was hot too. Still makes over list although not like I’m the beginning
Some of these cars depreciate, as delicately as a piano falling down a flight of stairs…
😂😂
Wow! What a video! This was even more surprising than the supercar video. I was hooked as soon as it started. One question- where was the Aston Martin DBX? Well done chaps!
Glad you liked it! Yes, we completely forgot the DBX
Another brilliant video lads and merry Christmas 🎉🚗🚙🚘⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍
loved this chat - thanks for the info on the Bentayga.
Brilliant could you pls do a segment on depreciation on super models ….. thanks
Of all the vehicles on that list the only one I really am interested in is the Urus. To me it it's perfect, faster than hell, handles great, and you can actually use it to do a multi-week road trip.

You're most welcome
Excellent video. I enjoyed it a lot. Very honest and clear presentation.

Thank you for another great video. Merry Christmas to you both. I look forward to next year's entertainment.
Thank you, Merry Christmas, David
You are spot on the G Wagon. I adore my 2022 G63, improved drivability, and had a better road presence.
Really enjoyed this. Suggestion: Include the financial figures [as you do with new (assuming drive away) price, plus sensible options] when stating depreciation at year 1 and then years2/3. For example, when quoting cars that appreciate in year 1, then depreciate in years 2/3, is the depreciation on the original or 'appreciated' price? Thanks.
There’d be no point because if someone finds a car with a different sticker price all the focus will be on that, and not the core message of the video.
Percentages are cleaner, more universal and less open to variance by individual cases
Merry Christmas from Holland. Love watching your video's 😄👌🌲
Merry Christmas to you too - thanks for watching
A bit suprised on your views on the Panamera Turbo S. I bought a 2 year old Turbo Sport Turismo earlier this year and it had barely dropped 20% of its new price including options, had miles on it too. It was likely overpriced due to the strange market but it seems (and still seems) to be holding its value fairly well. There is almost zero supply of used Turbo S, I think I've seen one on Auto trader in the last 12 months. It makes sense for the Panamera to tank in value (the old ones certainly did) but I'm not seeing it, where do you see it?
Mr. Sausage, I was thinking the same. Here in the Boston-Metro Region, the Panamera and Cayennes hold their value well. My sis who lives in Ft. Myers, it realistically seems a compatible model (mileage and opts included) will have a lot price $3k less.
So, I think region / location is an element the guys missed in their research model here.
Cheers from Boston.
@@DougMacRayeverything in the Boston-Metro region is expensive enjoy it.
The X7 is actually a pretty good car. My friend leant me his 50M and it was great. Very comfortable and drives pretty well considering the size
As always absolutely spot on boys 👏
👍🏻👍🏻
And now we wait for the overall market to tank and then the REAL bargains are to be had. 🤤
It is an overlooked and underrated subject - but a vital one. You early on summarised the point I think all but perfectly when the fuel consumption, service & insurance costs, road tax etc etc were mentioned on the one side - and depreciation on the other; with the latter veritably dwarfing the sum of all the other items - especially as the first few years are unlikely to see any major expenses incurred with normal servicing - plus of course they will be under warranty.
As a former Audi Finance manager, it will come as no surprise to you that my stock in trade was the PCP*. Clearly, the GMFV* was a "gamble" by VWFS* - if the actual book value was lower than the GMFV, the network would naturally take the car back as promised and subject to mileage and condition, the customer would pay nothing further. This was, understandably, a vanishingly rare occurrence, however - and for obvious reasons. VWFS certainly didn't want to find itself owning a lot of cars, much less a lot of cars "upside down" in value. In short, therefore, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the part exchange value would transpire to be above the outstanding GMFV amount, with any equity going to the customer which they would often use as the deposit for the next one - or at least part thereof.
The overall point I wanted to make was this - already by 2013 when I left, something like 75% possibly 80% of new Audis were financed on Solutions (I think I recall correctly that being the VWFS brand name for the PCP). Assuming even a small annual proportional increase since then (which will partly depend on how attractive the terms are - in my day, with the base rate at 0%, VWFS could afford to offer very low APRs and it wasn't unusual to find out that once you'd factored in the "negative cost" of the deposit contribution which was often part of the deal, it could work out that over the whole period of the loan, Audi Finance had ended up paying you to borrow the money!! I digress) - it wouldn't surprise me to learn that 9 out of every 10 new cars, if not 93 out of 100, are now financed using a PCP - in other words, depreciation (aka residual value) performance was integral to the discussion even during my time back when. Because of the fact that PCPs drive loyalty - repeat business - it's highly unlikely VAG is alone in promoting them. It's a dead cert all the other marques do the same. Therefore dull or otherwise, consideration - indeed quite detailed discussion - about depreciation is very likely to be part and parcel of the buying/financing conversation - it certainly should be.
Nice one gents - as you said, for many it's neither an obvious nor fascinating topic but I greatly enjoyed it!
*PCP - Personal Contract Purchase
*GMFV - Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (aka balloon payment)
*VWFS - Volkswagen Financial Services (which was the "go-to" Finance company for Audi, VW, Skoda, Lamborghini - etc etc all the VAG brands)
V interesting - thanks for the insider info
@@TheCarGuysTV a modest contribution from these days a mere dilettante by comparison with your magnum opus, dense info with video montage, graphics, animations and music/sound effects. @@TheCarGuysTV ha! I think I just realised what it was. I had forgotten writing "benign curmudgeons"... you're welcome!!😏
That why you buy 3 year old model where it's taken the big depreciating hit,and is still a relatively new car
The G63 is very common in the Swiss Alps so I guess a lot of people wants them for a skiing vehicle and rightly so because it can manage the sometimes very tricky conditions.
Not surprised about the G-Wagen. Here in Colorado, they are selling for 50-100,000 dollars over sticker.
Lord have mercy
Luxury cars and SUVs depreciate heavily because in the main they are the car equivalent of TVs. 2 years after they come out they are like turds, no one wants to admit they left a big one in the toilet bowl.

Great topic, I benefited from another big depreciating car, a 2018 Maserati Quattroporte, miles 6k, 1 owner, for 60% less list. I love it, & I think big saloons are the way to go for those who want to stand out from the crowd, enjoy the smug feeling of driving a luxury car and saving thousands.

A8 and similar starts life at -15% from the dealership receptionist and loses and other 10% when you get chatting the sales team. So -64% is year 3 is ok. 😅😂
Interesting
Good idea for a comparison. But for your first example, the G-Wagen, to appreciate in value over its first year invalidates any relationship between residual pricing and build quality, engineering, or luxury. The G-Wagen’s design goes back 43 years and it’s not even built in a Mercedes plant. As you point out, the #1 metric for retained value is demand. The G-Wagen is inferior in every way to a Japanese SUV but is a signifier of wealth, and this attribute alone causes the G-Wagen to be strongly desired among the newly rich.
I can tell you one thing- you're totally wrong about the inferior bit. Totally.
Remember the old once popular saying which is......"A fool and his money are easily parted."
Great deals as you say, for those who realise this and pick up the second hand deals.
Excellent and entertaining info as always guys. Merry Xmas to you both.

Bought my lexus suv less than 2 years old. Depreciation in those 2 years was a frightening £28,000!!! Since then I have had it 6 years and it has lost a more modest £10k in that time. That in my book makes it a cheap car over that period especially given its reliability and running costs. It’s possibly the least expensive luxury suv if bought a few years old and it’ll stay reliable unlike a merc, bmw or anything with “…rover” in the title!
Interesting. I paid $70K for my (new) 2017 Cayenne and got $45K for it as a trade in in 2021. That's a depreciation of 37% for 4 years. My wife's 2017 Lexus NX depreciated by 33% after 5 years. Not bad I think. And a couple of data points for you.
Both are pretty reliable (when looked aftered) and sort after in many countries
I know one car you own that will never depreciate. I am trying hard to get one of my own right now hopefully I will be able to...!
In the summer it felt like luxo barges were the only decent second hand value cars. Eventually opted to buy a brand new hot hatch to pair with the suv. Hyundai i20N. I hear the factory is running at 140% production to catch up noting they make it all themselves in S Korea.

We don't see many of these cars in Australia, but one things for sure, if you buy a Range Rover be prepared to have it for life, as no one will buy a used one. I'll have the Flying Spur. My favourite is the Jaguar XJ, but I think that it has slipped away into history which is a shame.
Given the meteoric drop in prices in the last two years, the SL63 Mercedes should also be on this list.
Great video boys. Now do depreciating proof cars or cars you can drive for a year and lose very little. Hot hatches, sports cars. I own a Gr Yaris.

Here in Sweden, older SUVs have lost a lot of value, such as Porsche Cayane, BMW X5 and X5, various Mercedes SUVs. So in order to get more money for these, they are converted into A-tractors that 16-year-olds can drive, although then they have set the maximum speed to 18.6 miles/h.
Here is some information about what this is:
In 1963, the Swedish Transport Safety Agency introduced the option to convert and register a car or truck to an A-tractor as an alternative to an EPA-tractor. When, in the mid-1970s, the Swedish Transport Safety Agency was going to abolish the possibility of newly registering an EPA tractor, and that existing ones would be allowed to remain for a three-year period before they had to be scrapped, there were protests that forced the agency to rethink. New registration of EPA tractors was banned on 31 March 1975 but instead the A tractor regulations took over completely, and an annual inspection was introduced for the remaining EPA tractors. The abbreviation "A" stands for tractor class A (road tractor (now class I)), (class B is agricultural tractor (now class II)), which can now be driven from the age of 15 (with AM driving license).
The principle difference between the EPA tractor and the A tractor is that the A tractor must be designed for a maximum speed of 30 km/h +/- 10%, while the EPA tractor would be designed with a certain gear ratio (10:1). The car must be rebuilt so that it is obvious that it is no longer intended for passenger or goods transport. However, a seat for one or two passengers next to the driver may be provided. The car's original interior and bodywork must be retained, but must be shortened where applicable so that the space behind the front seats cannot accommodate passengers or goods. This type of vehicle is still popularly called an EPA tractor.
In August 1978 a voluntary Slow Moving Vehicle (LGF) warning plate was introduced for A tractors, but from 1 January 1982 it is a requirement to have such a plate on the rear of the vehicle.
Trust the Swedes to come up with something sensible.
Yes, the Swedes do it. In which other European country can you see 16 year olds driving luxury cars legally? Certainly low speed but still luxurious.
It can be pointed out that you don't see any Volvo XC 90 or XC60 as A-tractors and this is because these have a higher value used.
I’m watching the Car Guys metamorphosis into What Car! 😂 New series…boot size compared 🤣

Very interesting historical snapshot of what happened in 2021-2022, but now that the assets bubbles are popping everywhere, know that “past performance is not indicative of future results”.
So, looking at those year 1 appreciation figures, am I right in thinking that there's a strata of wealthy customers that just keep buying the latest hot luxury cars, & selling them on after a year for a decent gain? All you'd need to do is get on those wait lists ahead of time and you're quids in!
Sometimes yes.
